Thinking about heading to Ohio at the very end of March/first week of April (never even been to Ohio I think...). Curious what the weather would be like? Would be in Columbus, and possibly Cleveland and wondering if that is a good time to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I'm kind of assuming weather could be anything at this time of year?
I read that 'spring' is an ideal time to visit CVNP due to wildflowers, but wondering if end of March/beginning of April is too early? Thanks for any advice, also any input on hotels in Columbus are appreciated.

You could have a foot of snow or 80 degree days. We have had both snow and a spring day this week. It's beautiful now but I just saw that the weeks is setting us up to freeze.
It's a crapshoot

It's a crap shoot during spring break time. It's more often dreary than nice.

I live in Columbus and there’s some early wildflowers blooming in Inniswood Metro Park right now.
Keep in mind CVNP is spread out in the city. You will drive to places but there’s waterfalls to see. Think about Hocking Hills in Logan,Oh. Th Er es lots of hiking with caves and waterfalls.
We had a blizzard the 1st week of April 2008. It can also be 60s or 70s
Do you want to be downtown or in shopping area hotels? Hilton is at Polaris and Easton shopping areas. I think Easton has a courtyard too. I can let you know about other things to in Cbus if you let me know your interests.

I agree with everyone else. It’s a complete crapshoot as to what the weather will be like. It could be 80 and beautiful or it could be snowing. My youngest has a Mid-March birthday and sometimes it’s it’s warm and beautiful and others, like the year she was born, there was a ice storm.

We don't care about shopping, it will be myself and my 17yo son. We will be touring OSU. Our favorite thing is good food and unique restaurants, based on my limited search I was thinking of the Short North district. He also plays jazz and sings so catching live music in the area would be fun. Also Hocking Hills looks nice and I see you can even stay in a cabin there. Thanks for the tip.

Short North would be perfect for you! It's a hip, bustling area with easy access to OSU. Make sure to hit Jeni's for some amazing, unique ice cream. North Market is a great little stop for a snapshot of Columbus food/culture. Easton is really more of an entertainment district than just shopping. Lots of great restaurants, but it's no more than 15 minutes from downtown, so you could do a little side trip from the Short North if you'd like to check it out. And Hocking Hills is a must-see. If you get down that way, check out Millstone BBQ. It's a great place! If you have other questions, be sure to ask. Just prepare for any type of weather and you'll be fine!

Cuyahoga is nice. Brandywine falls is just a short walk to see. Hocking Hills is very nice Definitely check that out if you can. And I agree with everyone else. Crapshoot on the weather.

What time is your osu tour? If it’s early in the morning I’d stay at any of the hotels on Olentangy River Rd. There’s Various Marriott ones. I can’t think of the others because I never stay at them.
The short north has The Joseph,Hilton, the Graduate, Moxy,& Hyatt but it’s at the convention center. See what’s playing at the Newport it’s right on Campus. So is the Schottenstein Center. Skully’s music diner is smaller. Then there’s Express Live and bars.
What kind of food does your son like? Short North has tons of restaurants. College kids love Miley’s Late Nite Slice & Buckeye Donuts on campus.
Skip Jeni’s I know the person who cleans her equipment. They wouldn’t let their dog eat it.
If you like smoothies Zest in the short north is our favorite. They also have bowls & toast.
North Market has a little of everything.
More downtown is Pins Mechanical. They have duckpin bowling and games with different food trucks.

I’m about 30 minutes due south of Cleveland, smack dab in the middle of the CVNP.
It’s our backyard. Crap shoot with weather is 💯 correct! However you can hike/stroll or ride the paths anytime of year. It will most definitely be muddy so bring boots! The only time they close paths/trails is due to flooding (which happens) or if there has been a report of erosion because of floods. If it snows, it is absolutely gorgeous hiking.
The CNVP train also runs, check the schedule on their website.
Lots of foodie stops...

Our tour isn't until the afternoon, I was thinking of staying at The Graduate, we have stayed at Graduates in other college towns and really liked them. Unless you have a better idea. We like small interesting hotels over chains. Though I have no problems with chains if they are nice....just not a fan of the Hampton Inns with the, in my opinion, gross group breakfast in the morning. Food: we don't love pizza, pasta, burgers, Chinese, he doesn't love Thai, but we do love ramen, sushi, steaks, ribs, curries, southern/bbq, vegetarian, regional (not sure what that would be? german?), I of course love healthy interesting food, love vegetables, including beets, brussels sprouts, interesting grains, etc. In general we both love to try anything new and interesting. Another question: I was thinking a couple of nights is enough in Columbus, if we (OK, I) wanted to go to a quaint Ohio town, perhaps on a river and stay at a cool, old hotel, do you have a suggestion? I'm thinking something similar to when we visited U. of Minnesota and we stayed a night in Red Wing on the Mississippi, it was so neat to walk around, completely different from anything we have here in the bay area.

The graduate is a good choice. It’s right in the middle of the short north and maybe 1 -2 miles from campus.
The North Market has all different cuisine and it’s walking distance. On High St by your hotel are lots of restaurants. We’ve been to DelMar twice this month. Their sea food stew is delicious. The Guild House is nicer food-steaks. There’s a Hyde Park steak house close. The Pint House is a bar/restaurant. Very casual More affordable.
The Fireproof Restaurant is tapas. My dd’s like that. Forno is one of our favorites. More smaller plates. My dh says it’s a woman’s restaurant. Basi Italia is good. Very quaint and good food. The Pearl is a good happy hour. Half off sandwiches and small bites. They specialize in oysters. My dh loves their burger. You need a reservation for happy hour even on weekdays. Love the brussel sprout appetizer at the Rossi. Their meals aren’t standing out to me. Get Creamed is a new ice cream place. Haven’t tried it yet. The instagrammers love it.
There’s 3 different taco options. My girls like Condado. I like Bakersfield. There’s Local Cantina too which I don’t mind.
Pecan Penny’s has bbq a little further south. Around the corner from that is another taco place-El Camino. Their ceviche is good but it’s offered only by chance. Smoked on High has good bbq. It’s further south in the brewery district. East of that is German Village. They have Roosters-bar food type stuff. Lindy’s which is very nice. [ For breakfast in that neighborhood is German Village Coffee ship and another Fox in the Snow. br] Tasi is a breakfast place. Small menu.
Fox in the Snow is on 4th & 2nd ave. Coffee and bakery. Their egg sandwich is delicious. There’s always a line. We love it there. Probably biased. It’s one of my dd”s friends and her dh. They have 3 locations. Zest is on High St. smoothies and toast.
Im not sure about a river town. Cleveland has the lake with lots of stuff and chagrin Falls is really quaint. It’s by CVNP.
The Cleveland people will know where to send you.
Also lately there just seems to be a lot more homeless in the short north. They will approach you. My nephew goes to OSU and a homeless guy is always near his apartment at 13th & High St.Apparently he drives a nice car and has nice clothes. The boys befriended him and he said he makes more money this way.

I live up in the Cleveland area right along Lake Erie. That would be WAY too early to see anything. We don't really get spring growth until the beginning of May.

My son is a senior at OSU. He's loved it there -- and gotten a great education. He's a music major -- feel free to attend his senior recital on April 1st, lol. I'll be in town then. I really like Columbus -- lots of great restaurants. Short North is a fun place to wander. The city is small and easy to get around. teddyw we loved Fornos, Condado, and another restaurant that looked like a diner with really fabulous food (can't remember the name.) There was a Mediterranean restaurant in the Short North called Brassica that I just loved. Pretty casual, and very yummy.

If you want German, don't miss Schmidt's in German Village, and don't skip out on the cream puffs. My fave is peanut butter fudge, but the "puff of the month" is always good to consider, too. The lunch/dinner buffet is AMAZING and gives you a good taste of a variety of different German foods. Wondering if the diner mentioned above is Cap City. It's a Cameron Mitchell restaurant on Olentangy River Road near campus. It's super popular. I've also heard amazing things about Philco, but haven't gotten there yet. I believe it's also in the Short North. The other restaurant that friends rave about it Skillet. It's a breakfast/lunch place and my friends say it's the best breakfast on the planet. Also on my "to do" list.

I'd Uber, though, the parking is really difficult. If you didn't have a kid with you I'd recommend a bunch of breweries. I do think Brewdog has stuff for underage people. The food is pretty decent, too. I do think Easton is worth seeing. It isn't just shopping and it is really a neat place. There are some really cool places on High Street across from OSU campus. It might be worth exploring there to get a feel for the whole OSU experience. I'm excited teddyw lives near me. Any other Columbus peas? For a river town, maybe Marietta?

We used to go to Cleveland for spring break.
One year it was so hot that we ran through sprinklers, (and one of the time I got pneumonia. )
One year we got snowed in for a week.
When I think of Cleveland I think of polish food or Jewish food. We used to celebrate that time honored holiday of pass Easter over ( with some weird ass Irish Catholic notes thrown in for good confusion)
