I'm also in Seattle and am completely blown away by how much has changed here in one short week. Y'all, if you think you don't need to "prepare," I disagree. And if you don't do it now, while you have the opportunity to do so easily, I think you're a little nuts. It's beyond sad what's going on, and I feel for so many people, including those who's livelihood is affected by the virus. There are a whole lot of people who will be/are in dire straights financially because of loss of income. This morning I made the tough decision to postpone a large event on Tuesday. I've rescheduled it for the end of April, and am hopeful things will be heading back to normal by then. If not, I'll reschedule it again. Thankfully, thus far eveyone is understanding about it. I'm also seriously considering canceling my trip to NYC to see my son later this month. I've given myself until Wednesday to decide. My plane ticket is fine and I can get a credit, but my hotel was booked in November during the hotel's annual sale and is non-refundable. There's nothing on the hotel's site about the virus, so I'll have to call and see what they're doing about refunds for non-refundable reservations. If I can even just get a credit to use at a future date I'd be good with that. I also have theatre tix for several shows this trip and I'm not sure what's going to happen with that. They're house seats (booked through a member of the production team rather than a ticketing venue) and am looking into what, if anything they're doing for people who want to cancel. It's more complicated than if they were regular tix. As to the government's response to the virus in the Seattle area. I won't get into speculation, but in two words: IT STINKS. Well, what would you expect? Your governor is a SNAKE. VP Pence shouldn’t have even spoken to him! Kind of reminds me of Trump’s response to our Camp Fire last year. When I saw that sound bite the other day I seriously felt it in my gut, as though I had been sucker punched. Our local leaders and medical professionals have been nothing but professional, helpful, and empathetic these last 8 days. Now our governor has to make the tough decision as to when/if to start formally limiting functions. Look for something on that coming within a day I’m hoping it won’t happen, but I can easily foresee some additional sort of containment measures being taken here if things don’t look up soon.

Peak 2020: when the dissemination of accurate, science-based information is "political." In fairness there's a ton of non science-based information on this thread that is absolutely political. Meta: is it "political" to discuss the fact that our country's response to this never should have been political?

The Bill Gates Foundation is supposed to offer home testing kits soon to hotspots. Bill donated 10 million to fund the vaccine weeks before it hit the US. Someone's on the ball.

I’m trying really hard to not go into full blown anxiety attack mode, but my DD is an RN on a pulmonary floor of a hospital. They have their first case of suspected Coronavirus, the patient is in the isolation room and she isn’t the patients nurse. They have moved into protocols as though it is Coronavirus, thankfully.
Problem is, my DD is a Type 1 diabetic. Her cousin, also a Type 1 diabetic, died 5 years ago from the flu. To say my family holds some emotional scarring, doesn’t begin to say it.
My Dad is 78 with congestive heart failure. His health is actually really good despite it, but he’s definitely in the category of people who don’t survive this.
I have 4 different auto-immune diseases, and take immune suppressing medication. My health has been precarious for awhile, sure don’t need this virus to test how bad it could get.
Ugh, I hope everyone stays safe. Just so hard when it involves our kids, no matter how old they are.

The UK has its third victim this evening 😕 How is the UK handling this? Are there quarantines, tests available, etc? The Government?......Pretty good to be fair. Plenty of accurate information and advice, extremely active efforts to trace contacts of positive cases and quarantine those. But that has been done for some weeks now. We have some, not many at the moment, drive through testing for people that suspect they might have it or at least think they have early symptoms. We've been instructed NOT to visit the Doctors office, Urgent Care/ER if we suspect we have symptoms or have recently returned from certain countries but to ring the health service helpline who will advice us what to do/next step. Assessments will be made about which patients can be advised to stay at home and isolate themselves to allow hospitals to focus on the most severely ill. Any probable positive cases are taken to specialist infection control centres at designated hospitals around the country. We're pretty lucky here though as there is no financial problem for anyone in accessing medical help.As of this morning(Sunday), 23,513 people had been tested across the UK, with 273 cases. This evening we had the third death, a man in his 60 with "significant" underlying health problems who recently returned from Italy according to the BBC. Both the other deaths have been much older but also with existing health problems. We've also been told that it's highly likely that there will be far more new cases to come, the government fully expects additional cases and the numbers are rising. The NHS has been put on an emergency footing. Hospitals have been asked to draw up plans to segregate virus patients from others and supply staff with protective masks and suits. Every hospital has been told to set up isolation pods in case patients arrive with the virus. These are not to treat patients,( they'll be transferred to specialist units) but to ensure they do not mix with other patients and staff when they arrive.

I just don't know what to think or do. DH has diabetes therefore high risk. I have kidney disease, lung problems, and general ill health. High risk. DD 2, aged 28, lives, with us, has asthma, general ill health. High risk. DD 1, aged 30, lives in WA, outside of cities, has asthma and history of pneumonia. High risk. GD, almost 6, lives in WA, possibly has asthma, suspect immunity problem.Possibly high risk.
DD1 and GD's trip to see us in Florida is only weeks away. DD1 feels like if she doesn't go to Disney now she'll never go (she's had supposed opportunities in the past that have always fallen through). We really can't afford to pay the airfare again later in the year unless we get it refunded because of Covid. There are currently 2 cases in our county. There are no cases in Orlando or the Orlando area. But people from all over the world go there, so it's only a matter of time. Part of me feels like a complete idiot for suggesting this trip needs to be postponed, OR that they come here but we don't go to Disneyworld and stay home. Part of me feels like I'm an idiot if I don't say it.
DD2 says, quite rightly, there's always going to be sick people at Disney. Very true. But usually what they have can't put us in the hospital or, in DH's and my case particularly, kill us. Highly unlikely that any of those things would happen, though. So am I being paranoid? I truly have no clue. My DD's and DH are totally unconcerned. It's just me that's got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I see other refupeas who are cancelling trips or, like me, are on the fence. I need help to figure this out. Please be nice. This is a difficult situation for me. Also I haven't seen DD1 and GD for over a year, and me going to visit them isn't an option. I miss them terribly. But I want them safe and well. Damn stupid virus!

We do have money for billionaire tax cuts. Oh, wait, now, we paid for those on our deficit credit card. But tax cuts for billionaires are important! Test kits? Meh.

The UK has its third victim this evening 😕 How is the UK handling this? Are there quarantines, tests available, etc? From a corporate standpoint (I work for a British company), many companies are dividing their workforce into groups. I know that BP is doing an A group and a B group and they alternate days in the office to help with social distancing and lessen the impact if there is exposure.

I wish some comforting news about testing and containment would come from those in power in our country at a time like this so my fellow citizens wouldn't have to feel this anxiety.

My best friend is flying from SEA to DAL this week to visit me and she's seriously considering telling people she's from Portland instead of Seattle (half jokingly). I feel for all of you in the Seattle area where I'm from and still have family there. DS is in Bellingham and has already had some classes cancelled at WWU.

This is about the 'reply' tweet (the bottom one) that the UW is developing its own test after failures in getting enough tests from the CDC.
The top tweet comes with it because of the way twitter embed works.

That certainly isn't widespread in the UK as yet and companies haven't been advised to do so officially from the government. I haven't heard or read of any major company doing that, time will tell I guess.

again: this is NOT a political issue.
I wasn't around much over the weekend, but I'm back now- and whenever I see that someone has added the Politics label to this thread, I'm gonna remove it.
So whoever keeps adding it, you might as well just NOT.

I have been wondering about WWU. Haven’t heard of anybody testing positive in the Bellingham area and unlike the school in Seattle and the Eastside, it sounds like Western hasn’t closed down yet. Why were only some cancelled?
