sharlag said in another thread that there is a smoking question that she'd like to post but didn't want to deal with the hate. So I thought that I'd start it for her. I smoked menthol cigarettes, 2+ packs a day, for over twenty years. I finally quit and have been a non smoker for the last twenty-five years. It took me four tries before I finally quit for good and two full years before I didn't think about lighting up EVERY SINGLE DAY. I love love love the smell of a freshly lit cig. I'd love to still be able to bum one occasionally but the last time that I did that, years ago, I got soooo sick I vowed never to do it again. Now I just lean in and breathe deeply when someone lights up around me. My husband also quit but then started using tobacco that he put between his cheek and gums. He finally gave that up too after a health scare but he says if he makes it to 80 he's going to take it up again. I'm glad that I'm not smoking anymore. I have more money because those puppies are expensive. I shudder to think of how much we'd be spending with two, 2+ packs a day smokers. I also like not smelling like a dirty ashtray and I hardly ever have to clean my huge living room mirror any more. I used to clean the brown gunk off of it every week. The best part is having my hands free. I was one of those smokers who always had a cig in my hand while trying to do things. The smoke I miss most is the one that I smoked while putting on my makeup. Tobacco is the single most addicting thing that I have ever encountered. I've smoked pot all my life and have stopped several times, for years at a time, when doing other things like school, work etc. and never given it a second thought. So come on Sharlag, ask your question. You'll get no hate from me. I'll even have your back when the shit storm of hate starts!

It's so hard to quit and I'm afraid if I had a puff I would go back to it in a heartbeat. I especially miss cigaretts when I'm super stressed. I love the smell of the cigarette being lit, but strangely, not smoked and I do have to move away if people are smoking near me. And I never noticed when I was a smoker, but the smell of smokers bothers me now too.
I can't believe how expensive they are! I quit when they were going to surpass $2/pack and I was saving for a wedding!

I smoke, I quit, I smoke, I quit, and the cycle goes on and on. Right now I am in a smoking phase but I keep saying that there's no way I'm turning 40 a smoker. So I have until July to break the habit for good. I think I will always love cigarettes even though they are stinky.

I smoked for awhile and quit, but more importantly my mother smoked for 35 years and quit cold turkey. While she already had emphysema by that time, the doctors all agreed that she added 10 years to her life by quitting, even after all that time. Point is, you can do it ladies, and it's worth it. But I know how hard it is to quit. No hate from me.

My grandmother smoked since she would 13yrs old when she passed in her late 70s we were told she had lungs of a 20yr old and they wouldn't have believed she ever smoked a day in her life. It was the craziest thing lol

I am not a smoker, but I think it's awesome that so many of you have been able to kick the habit. My dad was an alcoholic, and heavy smoker for most of his life. He finally quit drinking after about 35 years. Then he tried to quit smoking. He never could kick that habit. He said it was way harder than kicking the booze.

I'm was curious what her question was too when I saw her post that.
When applying my makeup for going out on a Saturday night I have a glass of wine on the bathroom counter as I blast music.

I started smoking when cigarettes were about 48 cents per pack -- mid-late 70's, I guess. In May of 2008, the doctor told me that he was going to have to cut off my right leg if I did not quit smoking. I quit. Turns out I had Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), and had 100% blockage in my right iliac artery and 75% blockage in the left. I had never even entertained the thought of quitting. I loved smoking! A cup of coffee and a smoke; a smoke after dinner; drinking and smoking; smoking after sex. But that was my wake-up call. I quit and never looked back. A couple of years later, I was diagnosed with COPD/Emphysema. Hindsight being 20/20 and all, I'd give anything to get a re-do on some of the decisions I made in my earlier years.

Mine had to do with little kids using sticks pretending to smoke-- a story to tell, not a question.
We were in a situation where we wanted to make a good impression to some people we had just met, and I was tending my great niece and nephew, trying to look wholesome and capable (quite a stretch for me, I admit).
We were hanging around out on the patio, a beautiful autumn afternoon. I look down and my not-quite 2 year old niece is doing a PERFECT impression of smoking this little stick-- sucking in her cheeks while she takes a drag, holding it between her 2 little fingers gracefully, then blowing out the imaginary smoke. Seriously, she has a future in ACTING if they ever start putting tiny children in cigarette commercials.
I say, "Oh no, cigarettes are gross! Let's pretend these sticks are elephant trunks!" to divert them before all the adults notice what the kids are doing. Niece, who I can't understand most of the time, says in a clear, ringing voice, "NO, I MOKIN' !"
Nephew proceeds to smoke HIS stick, adding in deliberate smoker's hacking coughs to his performance. My elephant suggestions didn't impress him either.
I thought of those candy cigs I played with as a kid, and how times have a-changed. And, no, I don't smoke, but gobs of my relatives do.

I've quit smoking many times and it would stick 6 mos, 1 yr, 2yrs...then back to it. This time, it's been almost 1 year and I HATE the smell of smoke. I HATE when SO kisses me. I HATE the way his clothes smell. I'm hoping (pretty confident) that I am done forever. I also smoked menthol, for about 30 years on and off. I'll smoke the hell out of some weed with you, though. And yeah, I had quit that for a long time too with no issue. It's even easier to quit cocaine than cigarettes.
I was watching SOA last night and thinking, F&CK!! they all smoke A LOT.

Smoking really messes with your sense of smell and taste. I have been smoke free for several years, and it took awhile for my taste buds to return. I used to douse my food with salt and pepper because everything tasted so bland. Now, if I put even one shake of the salt shaker over my food, I can taste nothing but the salt and it makes my food practically inedible!
There is a new co-worker who works in the cubicle just past mine. He goes out to have a cigarette every morning and afternoon, and when he walks past me, the smell makes me want to gag. I cringe when I think I used to smell like that. Or maybe no-one ever noticed and it takes an ex-smoker to really hate that smell?

Very proud of any of you who have quit. I know it must be hard. I lost my mom to lung cancer 26 years ago. She never met my kids. She was a long time smoker who quit and even taught quit smoking classes before she got sick. My MIL just lost a lung to cancer, but hopefully, they caught it in time and we won't lose her quite yet.

Food tastes so good when I quit that I blew up like a balloon. Finally got the weight off but it wasn't easy.

I don't smoke but just wanted to say congrats on quitting. My grandmother smoked since she would 13yrs old when she passed in her late 70s we were told she had lungs of a 20yr old and they wouldn't have believed she ever smoked a day in her life. It was the craziest thing lol My father passed away when he was 51 (from colon cancer). When they were in the middle of diagnosing his issues, they'd looked at his lungs assuming that since he was a smoker for 35+ years that the cancer had originated in his lungs. Nope, not a single freaking spot on his lungs. He was SO proud of that. I just rolled my eyes because I still firmly believe that his smoking contributed (but not the ONLY reason) to his cancer since it's not just your lungs that take a beating from the nicotine but the rest of the body as well. No hate from me ladies. I saw my parents fight over and over and over again trying to quit smoking. My mom did it for more than a year...and then during a stressful time, she picked it back up and still smokes. My in-laws quit when my dh was in his mid teens. A health scare caused my FIL to quit cold turkey with 1/2 carton sitting on the top of the refrigerator. MIL smoked for a year after that when she realized that FIL was serious about quitting for good. I smoke for a few months in my late teens...not because I wanted to try or because I liked it but because I worked in a place where if you smoked, you could go outside and get extra breaks. If you didn't smoke and you went outside to take a breather, you'd get in trouble. I said fuck that and bought cigs. And hated every single one I smoked. LOL I distinctly remember going away to college and the first weekend I came home and washed clothes. When I got back to college, I opened my bag and I could NOT believe how much it smelled!! I ended up rewashing everything. After that, I tried not to take stuff home. I remember begging my parents to crack the windows in the car because the smoke was so thick and it would make it feel like I couldn't breathe. To this day, I have a hard time being around the smoke. I feel myself gasping for air just walking through a cloud of it.

We frequent a candy store in Maine when we go up there. I remember the first time my kids were old enough to recognize those boxes of candy cigs. My girls, especially, were horrified. I remember one dd saying "Mom, WHY would kids even want those?! What kid thinks smoking is cool or fun?" I remember having them as a kid and thinking I was hot stuff. I was just like Mom!

Well, crap Sharlag, I thought we could stir up some trouble with this thread I loved those candy cigarettes as a kid. Times have really changed though. I even have a picture of my daughter with an unlit cig in her mouth when she was a year old. We thought it was funny. Yeah, really young and really stupid. She has never smoked, cigs or pot.

I just remembered one more story. I smoked in the labor room while having my daughter. Everytime a contraction would hit I'd drop my cig and my husband would put it out. After the pain stopped I'd yell at him for putting it out and light another one. The two nurses who were taking care of me would take hits off of my cigs because they weren't allowed to smoke while working.
Yeah...times have changed!

On again/off again smoker here too. Why is it so wonderful to do something so disgusting...? Especially when you are putting on make up for a night on the town. Drinking some wine, smoking a cig, spraying some perfume.... ARGH! I miss smoking so much, but I can't stand how other smokers smell. And tasting that first cigarette after an off-period is horrible But the fourth one is just heaven. *sigh* Even though I haven't smoked in a while, I'll never stop thinking about it. And I know from experience that if I just have that ONE first cigarette..... I'm on a pack a day again And here in Norway, a pack of 20 cigarettes is about $15, and I really can't afford that

I hate smoking. I don't have any particular beef with smokers except for the fact that I think it encourages kids to smoke. And I think that should be the goal...to not have any more new smokers. I have no idea how to accomplish this. I know it's hard to quit. That's why I don't want kids to just casually try it. It's too hard to stop.

Do any of you remember the black licorice pipes, with the red candy dots at the end, to look like the pipe was smouldering? I remember them from when I was a child, in the 80s. I see "candy sticks" (aka, obviously the same candy cigarettes in the same packaging still) but have not seen the pipes since I was a child.
