I was in Walmart yesterday. Apparently there were Walmart brand bleach disinfectant spray bottles on the very top shelf in the storage bag section. I would say there were between 7 to 10 bottles. The bottles were shoved way in the back of the shelf. A lady proceeded to use a mop handle to bring the bottles forward and put every single one in her cart. I was standing in the back of her. I made the comment "it would be nice if you left some for other customers". She turned around and told me that she was buying for her Mother too because she didn't want her Mom coming to the store. I told her I fell in that group where I wasn't supposed to be out and about too but I had no one to shop for me. She then told me that if I had asked nicely instead of being sarcastic, she would have been happy to give me a bottle. She did just that and offered me another bottle but I told her that one was enough for me. Off she went with all of the remaining bottles.

No, it’s fine to buy extra to share with another family or to donate. It’s fine to buy a little extra for your own needs, considering how hard it’s been to get our hands on basic household staples. Two boxes of pasta when you might normally only buy one. The problem lies with people who are buying a store’s entire stock of products everyone needs. Or dozens, when a couple would suffice. Whether it’s to hoard or to sell. That is my opinion ... others may feel differently. This is exactly what I think.

I bulk shop twice a year. January was my time to bulk shop. I did buy extra because I just had a feeling this was going to happen. I didn't hoard. I did like a lot of American shoppers who bulk buy. Yes, I did buy extra because I was worried if my DH's work has to shut down then we can make it through for a few months and pay critical bills. I am frugal. If my DH's work gets shut down (he is considered essential) we will have a small nest egg. It won't be large but I can pay to help keep important infrastructure going and help people keep their jobs. For example if we do lose our income and we get the $1,200 each that will be $2,400 I can make that last at least three months. That means I can pay our mortgage, utilities, insurance and even keep Hulu. I can buy fresh food like milk and cheese. I always have a big garden. Yes, I bulk bought seeds because I have a large yard. I can use that yard to really make a large garden and share food with the elderly and poor in my neighborhood since my area is low income and a food dessert. The way I can explain best about how I bulk buy is like the Amish. I learned a lot from them.
When the crisis did hit I had to bulk buy for elderly loved ones. That was a frenzy. All the shoppers I met were kind and even helped when I explained I was not being greedy and what I was doing.
I am going to be probably cruel but assholes are the ones who stepped on elderly ladies to buy toilet paper. Who stocked up on toilet paper and grabbed food they will never eat or know how to prepare. Who are price gouging in a time of fear and panic. Who are feeding into that fear and panic. I noticed they all bought toilet paper, junk food and hand sanitizer. Three things that won't save your life or improve others lives. People get with it HAND SANITIZER DOES NOT KILL COVID! It helps to prevent spread until you can properly wash your hands with soap. I noticed you guilty offenders were not purchasing soap.

Buying food for two weeks or an extra pack of toilet paper doesn’t make you an asshole. But filling two carts of toilet paper just for yourself at a time when supplies are low makes you either an asshole or ignorant, in my opinion.

My husband has to go out today and shop for the group home. There are presently 12 people to shop for. We are required by "the state" to have 2 weeks of groceries available. Now do we expect anyone from the state to show up any time soon? No, actually they informed us we are getting a license extension right now because they are not coming to inspect us for a while yet. But the looks he will get. I can only imagine. Plus in the midst of all this, the closest mental health treatment place closed down. We have to refuse admissions because we can't quarantine anyone coming from a hospital etc. Also with all the restrictions on follow up care, we aren't convinced that should a new person arrive at the home and decide they don't want to stay (can't force them to) or have a relapse mentally trying to to adjust to a new environment all the hospitals will refuse the person access at this point. It's such a vicious cycle right now, hospitals need to clear their beds, but we can't accept anyone. Especially someone who really should still be in an institution but being released early.

OP- I know you've already responded, but just want to share my defintion of an asshole. Shopping for a 40ish year old guy yesterday- appeared healthy enough and even told me that he was out and about just not going to grocery stores. Anyway he wanted 3 cases of water (32 bottles) and thankfully the limit was two. The rest of his order included 2 of each of just about every variety of soup made, so I got them. Many more items... After I finally finishing over an hour later, he messages me with another like 10-12 things. If things were out of stock, he said I don't care what you get just get something. Funny thing is I get to the register and I knew there was a 2 soup limit but earlier this week it was by variety- now it's 2 cans of ANY soup. So- now I have to spend time refunding...
Ok- get to his house and I could see in his foyer. There were at least 10 cases of water stacked up. He also said I probably shouldn't have gotten the bread (2 loaves) because I have 8 in the freezer...
He said to me we don't know what's going to happen so I'm going to be prepared. I had to bite my tongue not to tell him that we don't have a food shortage and if people would just slow down for a few days to let stores catch up we would ALL be ok.
No- I don't know this guy at all and yes I'm judging. And during shopping for him, an elderly man showed me his list from his wife and asked me to help. He was out because he didn't want her in the crowds. I helped him because he was pitiful. He thought spaghetti was sold in jars... This is what angers me. We did manage to find suitable replacements for him for the most part.
Sorry for rambling. I had to get this out before heading out today, so I don't piss off any of my customers.
