But I am hearing of entire families (mom, Dad, all the kids) wandering around stores. Come on! That needs to stop. That has stopped here from what I can tell. It's odd shopping at Walmart and only seeing one customer per cart rather than a family. No one talking to each other. That place is a hotbed of gossip particularly for older customers but not right now. Everyone is focused on getting what they want and checking out. That's my kind of shopping. While I can understand the fairness issue trying to be addressed in the OP's area, it would be too hard to police. For us, having some of these stores open and selling non-essentials will give me an opportunity to get plants for my mother who is an avid flower gardener. She's already been out readying her garden beds and soon will want to fill them with flowers and plants. Not being able to go anywhere else, I'm so pleased it is warm enough that she can get outside and keep occupied doing what she loves. Plus it is good for her physical and mental health.

Here's the letter with the list of items. The problem is that now the neighboring county, which has had no positive cases so far, is seeing a HUGE uptick in customers at the stores. Unfortunately the county where both my kids work and where we do our shopping and other business. That list is nuts. I don't think that could hold water for long, if anyone challenged it. I agree that some of those things would be essential - the craft suppies, etc- while it sounds frivolous, right now would be at the top of the essential list. I would support limiting how many can enter a store - as in only 1 PERSON per family in the store. We do not have any shelter in place orders. But I am hearing of entire families (mom, Dad, all the kids) wandering around stores. Come on! That needs to stop. My teenage son works at a Hardware store and they don’t allow children to enter the store. And no browsing. They’ve had to tell a few people if you're just in here to kill time you need to go home. One man was particularly upset that his son couldn’t be in the store with him. And then he got snappy with my son because he needed to sign the charge to his account. The other day my DH has to tell a customer in line for fast food takeout that he shouldn’t take his frustration out on the cashiers, they’re just doing their job. People don’t like the rules and it really brings out the worst in them.

That's crazy.. I agree with the Peas.. if you are in the store, why not. I wouldn't say go to 10 stores, but you are already there.. so dumb. And I am a solo shopper and leave the kiddo at home. We did last night went for a little drive and got some Dairy Queen.. our one outing for the week. It was nice just to take the drive.
If they could come to Colorado and get these people off the mountains skiing, snowshoeing or snowboarding.. those idiots just drive me nuts.

After our governor ordered non life sustaining business to shut down 11 days ago, I wasn't sure if the non essential parts of Target would be closed. But they aren't, you can still shop anywhere in the store. I don't see anyone shopping in the rest of the store, people are pretty much only going out and buy what they need. But I can see where people would have reasons for needing extra stuff.
I am happy to say that the weekly times I have been out, everyone has been being very careful! I'm referring to people in the stores.

I notice the same at the stores. It reminds me of after Sept. 11th, everyone just had a very sad look on their face, and no one is talking. In early March, it was different, everyone was talking to each other, trying to suggest places to buy hand sanitizer, etc. And I no longer take one of the teens to shop with me. I don't want extra exposure for them, and I don't want to run out of our hand wipes that we have for our car.

In New Zealand we're in a 4 week nationwide lockdown and all non-essential stores have had to close - that includes online shopping. The only services that are allowed to trade or operate are those that the government describes as providing the 'absolute necessities of life' like supermarkets, banks, GPs, pharmacies, service stations, energy companies, waste removal services and couriers (who can only deliver essential goods). Government departments like immigration, justice, science, plus the police and military are also 'essential.' Today, it was announced that the sale of heaters, whiteware and computers will be allowed in recognition of the need for people to safely isolate and work or study from home but ordering has to be done online or over the phone and the goods have to be delivered. For other general online shopping, you have to be an approved essential business and be able to demonstrate you're providing an essential service. Basically the government is trying to get as many businesses as possible to have their premises closed to stop the transmission of Covid-19 in the community. We are all required to stay at home except for going out to buy essential supplies, seek medical treatment or exercise close to home. I really hope that the 4 week lockdown is going to stop this virus in its tracks. I sure hope it helps slow the virus in NZ! My husband's company is located in NZ, and he told me about the shut down. We had 3 of his co-workers here for about 10 days the last couple weeks of Feb. We spent time with then I love learning about NZ! So glad they got home safely.

I'm guessing you're south of Howard County (we are north). The reports I've seen are on the county's facebook page from people who work at places like home depot and walmart.

Have they also shut down online shopping where you are? If not, can't you still buy your "non-essentials" online and have them delivered? I think the reason they are enforcing this is to limit people leaving their homes and spreading the virus, except for essential things. It might as well be shut down if it’s going to take three weeks for the stuff I order online to get here. I wear a watch every single day and my watch battery died yesterday. I’ve replaced the battery in that watch before so I know I can’t just go get one anywhere I would normally go, I have to go to a real hardware store for it or a Batteries Plus type place, but they usually only sell the cheap off brand ones. I thought, oh I’ll just see if I can order one on Amazon. Yeah, I can order it but it won’t get here until April 20th and that just doesn’t work for me.

My DIL I live with has managed to come up with an excuse to go to Target pretty much everyday. Today it was computer paper, which WAS a legitimate need, but the new pajamas and craft supplies she bought weren’t. When I needed a prescription picked up the other day, she jumped to volunteer to do it, with a corresponding shopping trip.
I’m trying not to judge, but neither her or DS are taking the guidelines nearly as seriously as I do.

I was shocked to find out our local pawn shop was considered essential, (due to the banking aspect).

I have clocks in several rooms (three on appliances in the kitchen alone) and of course my cell has a clock when I turn it on. But after literally a lifetime of wearing a wristwatch daily it’s an ingrained habit to automatically look there first, and I check my watch probably hundreds of times a day. And ironically enough, in spite of the fact that I have multiple watches in my house, they ALL have dead batteries. I usually wear the same watch every day and just get a new battery when I see that the watch is running slow. I replace the watch entirely if it somehow gets broken or if the crystal gets really scratched. The last time I bought a new watch (which is the one I’m currently wearing) I thought to myself I should buy two so I could have a backup. So I bought one fun one (the one I usually wear) and one dressier one that I could use as a backup. Yeah. Well, that one has a dead battery now too. Three weeks is a LONG time to go without a wristwatch when you’re so used to having one. I don’t always have my phone right with me or in my pocket in the same way that I always have a watch right there. Last time I bought a watch battery, I got fed up with the whole process and broke down and bought the tool to pop the back off and the other tool to put the thing back on from Amazon so I could do it myself because so few places have the tools to do it now. I really should go through all of my watches and open them all up to take out all the old dead batteries and recycle them, pick my favorite three and get new batteries for those three. The batteries last so long that it doesn’t make sense to buy backup batteries now because they would be old by the time the current ones crap out.

Yes, when I forget to put my watch on, I'm constantly checking my empty wrist and thinking "it's still 3 hairs past a mole, dammit". You feel naked without it, don't you? I wonder whether simply wearing it as normal, even knowing that it doesn't work, would stop the constant need to check the time?

I don't know where you live but Walgreens Drug Store carries many small hard to find batteries that are for watches, etc. My Walmart no longer carries tiny batteries in the jewelry department but the one in the next town still has those batteries. You just have to ask because they keep them in a drawer. I got fed up in February with these watches with dead batteries.
I went on YouTube and watched some videos on how to change batteries. I didn't buy any tools, all but one of mine just popped open with a pocket knife as shown. The other had tiny screws and I had to use my glasses kit phillips screwdriver. I also went to the Walgreens here in town. I fixed SEVEN watches in a two week period! I got a multi-package of a ton of tiny batteries from Harbor Freight and two at Walmart in the next town and one from Walgreens in my town.
Since I didn't know which batteries MOST of them used until I opened the back, the package from Harbor Freight came in handy, four batteries came from that package. I'm sure the batteries won't last as long but it gave me practice and I got them running, at least for a time and didn't break the bank all at once.

Here’s a tip I learned from my aunt- when you aren’t wearing your different fashion watches or your good watch, pull the setting pin out and it will extend the battery life. I don’t always remember but it does work.

Target in Summit County, Colorado (the ski area) has done this and it was shown on the local news. I understand why as the minority of people are using it as a place to go, sad they ruin it for others. BUT you can order non-essential items like toys, electronics and what not for in store pickup. This is how Michaels and Joann’s are operating. Small inconvenience but if it limits your time of your physical body being in the store, so be it. I am going to say I applaud all efforts to keep things available while minimizing the spread. A little inconvenience now will get us back to business as usual sooner. I live in Denver and I do have an item I need waiting at pick up for me at Target and we don’t have restrictions, I just am trying to not expose myself or others more than needed.

What is your only toilet breaks or your refrigerator dies or you get a leak in your roof? Building/ construction and repairs that are immediately necessary to maintain the health safety and well-being of people are allowed to take place (as long as the work undertaken the bare minimum required). So this would include unblocking sanitation pipes, repairing a toilet, and securing a roof where there is an immediate threat to human health and safety. Anything non-essential has to be deferred.

No, because I actually NEED to check the time. 🤣😂🤣 Trying to do distance learning with a nine year old who needs to be monitored so she’s doing each thing for the right length of time and not quitting early, ugh. Read for 30 minutes, do online math for 45 minutes. Write in your journal for 15 minutes, etc. I honestly don’t know how those teachers can herd cats like that all day long without going insane. We’re only on day two and already I am sick of the endless whining. Then on top of that I have a little dog that likes to poop and pee in the house but who won’t bark or otherwise let me know she needs to go out, so I have to keep track of when she went out so I know when to get her out next, KWIM? Plus in normal times, I check in the morning as I’m helping my kid get ready for school. Checking to see how long before the bus comes. Checking to see how much time I have in the afternoon if I go somewhere before I need to be home to get her off the bus. Checking to see how long before DH gets home if I have to have something pulled out for dinner. It’s just so much easier to look at the watch on my arm than to check my phone or some other way because it’s always with me where ever I happen to be. Honestly it’s making me crazy and just having the dead watch on my arm won’t help.

Our Walgreens only has the common hearing aid batteries and they come in a pack of like 12. I don’t think they even have a jewelry section here. (ETA: Sorry, I misread that, you said it was WalMART that had them in the jewelry department, not Walgreens.) Walgreens didn’t even carry the button battery for the digital thermometer they sell under their own store brand. Had to get that one from Batteries Plus. Most of my watches are Timex Indiglo and I swear those backs are made like a bank vault they are so hard to get off. DH would try with his pocket knife and scratch the total crap out of the edges and the back trying to do it and would wreck the tiny lip in the process. That’s why I gave up and bought the tool. OMG like night and day different with how easy the backs just pop right off effortlessly with the tool. And getting the back on again with the other tool, for the ten bucks or whatever it cost was so worth it to not risk smashing the crystal or scratching it up trying some other DIY way of getting the back snapped on again after replacing the battery. I should have bought them both years ago because they save me so much frustration. I used to be able to go to Target or somewhere and have the battery replaced for a few bucks but no one does it anymore. They would much rather just sell me a new watch.

I just asked my son to check to see if fred’s Was still selling furniture and they are! I need to go buy a recliner, because my husband has hurt his shoulder/ribs/vertebrae and he can’t sit or sleep in the bed!
No going to the hospital, well because the hospital wasn’t the best when I was there, and now? Ha.
I will call his back surgeon tomorrow or so to see if he can go in to see him?

Update:
The recliner was purchased! And husband has already napped in it. I think this may work better than the HUGE amount of meds he has been taking. He looks more relaxed and his face is pinking up. He has been looking very grey.
( the tempting fate part? torrential rains just as I got home. Son was able to here quickly and move the chair into the house).

Won’t help you now, but I used to go to a jewelry store to get watch batteries replaced.

I know the mom and pop hardware store in my area carries them, I’m just waiting until we have a more pressing hardware need before going over there due to sheltering in place.

No, not happening here. I don’t see what the point is in doing that. If the non-essential stores are closed anyway, the other stores are not taking their business. Making the stores that are open limit their stock that they can sell will only hurt them. Why not at least have the businesses that are open be able to stay afloat and do as well as they can?

I wanted to get spare batteries for our thermometers but couldn't find any in town. I ordered them from amazon but had to order 10 and 20 piece packs. But the closest is 1225.
