Never heard of Blue Laws? Off to read this thread....
Okay I get the gist of it.. when/where you can or can't buy booze...
I never heard of it called that anywhere I lived. I guess I moved around so much it's all garbled up in my head....
I don't think I lived anywhere that you could buy a car on Sundays. Are there states that you can? I know on the internet or private sales you can. But all dealerships are closed.
From my memory there were places that I can remember booze being roped up or hidden by tarps in grocery stores.
I think liquor stores were closed on Sundays when I lived in TN and MO?? Maybe??
I don't even remember what California was like when I lived there. I think you could buy it (beer and hard liquor) in the grocery store.
Colorado, liquor stores are open 7 days a week. Grocery stores until last year could not sell any liquor except 3.2 beer. Now you can buy beer and some other type drinks, but no hard liquor. My local grocery store has some kind of agreement with the liquor store next door and so the grocery store isn't selling any beer now. I am not sure how they got away with that, but whatever.
I just moved so many times and my parents were not big drinkers so a lot of what I remember is kinda muddy.

Actually, you cannot buy liquor at all on Sundays in Texas. Liquor stores are closed. You can buy beer and wine at grocery stores after noon on Sundays. you are correct!! I wasn't thinking about the differences when I typed that out. My bad!

workingclassdog Car dealerships in California (or at least in So.Cal.) are open on Sundays. You can buy any type of alcohol at grocery stores, any day. You cannot purchase alcohol between the hours of 2AM and 6AM in California. I’ve never been in a store during that time so I don’t know if they rope off the area or not. I do know that some grocery stores have alcohol throughout the store on endcaps, so I don’t know how they rope that off.

I live in WI. Not only can you by liquor on any day of the week, at a grocery store, but they sometimes even give out free samples. The closest thing, at least in the part of WI where I live, is no vehicle sales on Sundays. So that is your day to go shop the car lot without being hassled. Samples?! Cool! Lol! And I would love to go to a car dealership without being stalked by salesmen. But dealerships are open 7 days a week here.

Never heard of the term blue law. Growing up things were closed on Sunday, just for a day off. Alberta stopped government run liquor stores 20 years ago, so our stores are open whatever day and hours they want. Even the grocery store in our village is open 9am - 9pm Mon - Sat and 11a-7pm on Sun. But the hardware and drug store are closed, just because it's slower on the weekend.

We were joking at work the day they were handing out samples of apple Crown Royale that we were going to have disguises to get more. But off the top of my head they have done samples of various wine, beer, Bailey’s, and Hard Mike’s.

They call local laws in the UK By-Laws. They are laws made by local councils covering their districts/county. They can sell liquor on Sundays here but the stores, all stores, have limited opening hours if they are above a certain square footage. That isn't a by-law, it covers the whole country. They can only open for 6 hours and are not allowed to open on Christmas day or on Easter Sunday. Smaller stores have no restrictions. The term Blue Laws doesn’t apply to all local laws. Just the ones policing morality (which historically, we’ve been very into doing). And it’s not the official name, just a nickname for that class of laws.

I think it’s an American thing.

I'm up in Ventura County and our Albertsons has alcohol samples on Friday and Saturday. I've had beer, wine , vodka, and hard cider. I typically will lure some other shoppers to join me so we can have a mini cocktail party.

Thanks lucyg I'm sure ours were originally too when there was no drinking or buying it here on a Sunday at one time, whenever that was.

I am amazed at all of the people who have never heard the term "blue law". Is it regional? I instantly knew what you meant.
We have a lot of dry towns in Ohio. I live in Westerville, and it used to be dry. In fact, it is kind of the birthplace of prohibition. We aren't dry anymore. In fact, we have two breweries.
We do have blue laws. You can't buy alcohol on Sunday mornings. I think it is until 1:00? It is usually roped off at the grocery store.
