Are you suing this as part of the pattern or for a disposable insert? I've been sewing my masks with a (flannel) pocket and using the Wypall as a removable/replaceable filter.

Thanks! I had seen the first BI article, the Scott brand didn’t do nearly as well as two others. I have one of those others plus the Wypall and I was trying to decide which to use to make some disposable filters for DH and his coworkers.

I found Zep at home depot in case anyone looks there. I put one layer in my double layer cotton mask and I can breathe ok although it's hot and gross. When dd put 2 layers of zep in she said she was getting panicky and felt like she was having trouble breathing so she switched to one layer.

Has anyone tried using filti fabric? I already have the Wypall x80 towels, but this supposedly performs even better than that. Are you using this as part of the pattern or for a disposable insert? I saw something that made me think of the peas who are having problems with the elastic hurting their ears. www.patterninsider.com/mask-mates-ear-savers-free-crochet-pattern/There are lots of styles of ear savers. A lady just brought me 25 of these crocheted, and she is doing 75 more to take to the hospital. I was going to crochet them but I also love the ones that you sew that match the fabric of the face mask. Here are a few examples of cuteness.

I’m regretting tossing all my scraps now! 450 masks generates A LOT of scraps, but I kept saying, what will I do with them? I may need to dig back into my stash...

basket1lady , I am keeping all of my scraps. I am also making ticker tape coasters and a ticker tape quilt with my scraps as well as a quilt that Stephanie Ackerman posted. I have now organized my scraps in drawer in my workroom of my studio. I am having a blast! Start saving your scraps from here on out because there are a LOT of things you can do with them.

Thanks. I don't have a steamer. Ironing is a challenge with all the pleats. I think I'll go ahead and wash/dry them and do my best ironing them. There's only 12 masks to do. I made one for a friend but she will wash her own before using it. And another question. I was encasing the copper wire with electrical tape but it's really fiddly to do and looks really bad. Is it okay to use the bare wire and just bend in the ends so they don't poke? Use bonsai wire. Its coated and won’t rust. I cut 2” lengths, bend the ends in and thread up into place through the top binding tie

I wanted to use what I have-I have to drive an hour to buy anything now. I left the copper wire bare (with the ends bent in) and included a pipe cleaner in case the wire was uncomfortable.

For those of you using shop towels as filters, are you making your filters removable? I accidentally washed one filter and it held up really well. I’m now thinking whether I should just sandwich it into my fabric vs going to the trouble of sewing a pocket.

I ran out of elastic and now DS's coworker wants a couple more masks. If I can I'd like to make them the same as the ones I made before, so I need to get some elastic. Any good sources for a fair price on 1/4"?

Patter, I love your headbands. If I didn't have such a flat head, I would try them. Every headband I've tried rides right up & off my head.

I'm hoping to find actual elastic since they're insisting on paying for them.

Any good sources for a fair price on 1/4"? Amazon. I’ve already received one order and just placed another. The “in stock by” date was pretty accurate on my order: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BWP4M5U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1ETA: Make sure you select only the Amazon fulfilled ones.

I have very few scraps. I used up a lot of fat quarters and one makes 4 masks (one side) and the binding for the sides. But I do have plenty more fabric! I’ve cut out about 250 masks and I swear I’ve barely made a dent in my stash.

Here are some comments I have received about fabric: "My sister and I have a contest going to see who can die with the most fabric." "As a quilter, I always buy 5 yards of everything. I never know what I will need." My car is literally a store right now. Look at this. Donated fabric that I take to the ladies as they need more. I keep a yardstick and scissors too just in case I don't know ahead of time what they need/want. Most of the folded fabric is 5+ yards each. It's crazy. I thought I had a big stash until I learn what other ladies have.

Four 6? 8? story buildings all connected by walkways and the biggest fire trap you ever saw. It really was a maze in there. Most of it was twills, satins, upholstery, etc for garment or home decor. And there was one stall that had quilting cotton. A lot of it had dye issues/slubs/crooked printing, but most of it looked perfect. I’d fill a backpack every week, all for 3¥ a yard. After our housekeeper, Mrs Seo, the fabric market was my favorite thing about Korea!

I meant to post—thank you for the thread! I use the AB mask because I only have so much elastic and the ties seem like a good idea—I have been very appreciative!

Wanted to update that I love the aluminum nose bridges that I bought from ebay. I do make mine removable, but I've had a few go through the wash with no problem. You can find them on Amazon or ebay, but Amazon has a few 3rd party listings that are Amazon fulfilled so free Prime shipping.
For those of you making masks with ear loops, are you having problems gauging the length of elastic to use? It seems like everyone in my household requires a different length due to face shape. I'm wondering how those who are sewing in bulk are dealing with this issue?

seasidemermaid, I know some of my ladies are sewing casings and inserting a longer piece of elastic that is just knotted together so the "wearer" can adjust and change it to their liking but mostly we are doing twill ribbon instead.

That's what I think I'm going to try next. I did see this hack, but it doesn't seem durable:
On another note, she has a link near the bottom for a mask pattern by Tom Bihn that seems really interesting. Has anyone tried making one of his masks?

I used the adjustable hack on this page (with regular elastic since that's what I had), although I have not worn them myself yet. DS said his co workers haven't had any problems with them. www.prettyhandygirl.com/best-fit-facemask/

Thanks gale w. I have beads and will try adding those to the elastic to see if that helps with the adjustment.

Another update. Using beads to adjust the ear loops worked perfectly! No more guesswork as to how long to make the loops. Here's a youtube video I found that shows how:

I enclosed a note with the masks I made and in it, I mentioned that the ear elastics are adjustable and to adjust, hold the bead and pull on the elastics. I didn't have any questions about it so I guess it works. I use the single tie on my own.
since I used the casing method I just put the two elastics through the bead (after putting the elastic through the casing) and then tied a knot on the end of each one. But the method shown in the video looks pretty good too.
