Someone on FB posted that they are starting to make headbands with buttons on them for healthcare workers to help save their ears. Another tip was to use a piece of grosgrain ribbon and sew buttons on the right and left sides so that you can use that to hook the elastic to. Anyone try making these? Wondering if this would be useful as I have tons of buttons and ribbon in my stash.

Strap similar to this, but made with ribbon and buttons:

I’ve noticed a lot of pictures in the news of medical staff that have masks on their ears. I imagine that’s got to hurt after awhile.

Yes my daughter sent me pics of her wearing some. The one she likes best so far has butterfly buttons, as the elastic catches on to them easily. She said "Don't put the buttons too high (as in the picture) or it hikes the mask up. Make them behind the upper part of the ear." She also asked for head coverings, which I got a pattern for and am making. Attachments:

I’ve been seeing pictures of these for several days.
A lot of us with laser cutters have been making S hooks out of acrylic. They do the same thing as the ribbon - they catch the elastic ends behind the head. I stopped counting after making over 400. (Donated them to several nurses for use in their hospitals.). Then I saw a post from someone on a Facebook laser group, they were going to make buttons for the ribbon, which I thought was a great way to use up every bit of the leftover acrylic.
(I’m currently in quarantine for two weeks in another state, on the opposite coast and away from my laser cutter... I took my sewing machine in my carry on bag and am sewing face masks in my hotel room.)

Great ideas! Anyone have links to patterns for the headbands? Also, thanks for solving a mystery for me. I discovered a new crafter yesterday, Shannie Makes, and she had a photo of those mask hooks in the OP. Until I saw this post, I had no clue what they were. For those making masks, Shannie Makes has some good patterns, a couple that are different from what is making the rounds right now.

I’m making the ribbon and button ones right now. Finally a good project to use up all those buttons and ribbon I’ve been holding on for years. I have enough supplies to make 300.

My daughters just sewed on a bunch of buttons on headbands that my friend got at the dollar store. My friend has a network of people sewing masks for health care workers and it was a little bit we could do to help. My daughters had been doing some embroidery kits from amazon during stay at home time.

For anyone who has a 3D printer, here's a link to a "pattern" for something serving a similar purpose. I don't have a 3D printer so know nothing about it, but it looks like a cool idea! Mask Strap Pattern

Everyone's head is a different size, so how would you know where to sew the buttons onto the headband so that they position above the ear?

Everyone's head is a different size, so how would you know where to sew the buttons onto the headband so that they position above the ear? I don't know that there is a formula, and I don't know how much heads vary in size, but using what I know about drawing faces, the eyes are actually halfway between the top of the head and the chin -- lower than most people realize! Judging from that, maybe buttons should be placed only slightly above the halfway point on a headband.

I haven’t made one yet so I can’t say how well it works. theseamanmom.com/headband-pattern/?fbclid=IwAR3LGSmVDrqd08Ce0Aw8JsADJmnerbatWCK8TWH7vPjmbN7pptF4YuhQpvA

Also are you sewing the edges or burning them so that they don’t fray? You can also seal the ends with craft glue or clear nail polish.

I’m going to have to try to make one of the ribbons with buttons. My ears are killing me from wearing the ear loops with my glasses for 12+ hour shifts. It sounds much safer than the safety pin and rubber band contraption most of us are currently using.
