In years past I basically had one winter coat and that was it. However, I have a few others now and sometimes feel like I have too many, other times not enough. I just bought a new winter coat that is more casual, and I also bought a longer winter coat that isn't dressy, but more so than the other one. Can't decide if I should keep it or take it back. I wanted something longer so this fits the bill, but I am not sure if it is the style I want. The price and fit was good, though. I bought it at TJMaxx and today is the last day to return for a refund, so I need to decide quickly. I also just bought a belted casual jacket from a thrift store that is great for this time of year, but may not be warm enough come winter. Last year I bought a softshell jacket that is also good for fall and spring. Add to that a few fleece jackets and that is my coat collection. Does that sound like too many coats, not enough, or just right? I am just curious as to what is average.

I have 3 winter coats and 3-4 fall/spring type coats. I live in a colder climate though and really wear my coats a large chunk of the year.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. It doesn't get very cold here often, but the weather is variable. I have two dressy wool coats -- one black, one blue (I like wearing the blue one to events where I have to hang my coat, which I go to a few times a month--it is so much easier to find my coat at the end). I have a long down coat for when it does get really cold. I have a light, lined rain jacket for this time of year when it is in the 50s and 60s. I also have a log shearling coat from my NYC days that is pretty much useless here but I can't bring myself to get rid of.
I don't buy anything I don't love because I know I am just going to find something I like better later and regret it, and/or I will get a neurotic twinge when I wear it, even if it seems like a good price. So I would return your coat, not because you have too many, but you don't love it and you can keep warm without it,

Funny, a friend and I were just talking about this because I stopped by her house to pick up something and she was in the middle of getting her coats up from the basement. She must have 20 coats, seriously. omg. I hate to shop so my coat collection consists of: -- long LLBean down coat, with furry hood -- my Serious Coat for our awful winters. -- shorter -- covers my rear -- quilted-type coat, fine for colder fall days as long as I wear a sweater under it. -- water-resistant shell type, with a slight lining, good for rainy blustery type days that aren't really cold. I usually wear a sweater under it. -- short zip-up fleece, very light -- good only for the beginning of fall when it's just cool out.
I also have a grey wool coat with hood, long enough to cover my rear. I got it at a yard sale years and years ago. It's old now, the lining of one pocket is ripped, the buttons are those kind with the loop, and no zipper... but, because it's wool it's warm. The hood is big enough that it comes up around my face so no cold air goes down my neck. Every winter I say I need to get rid of this coat because it's so old, and every winter I change my mind when I put it on for the first time and feel how warm it is. So this is my winter coat until I need to break out the Serious Coat. lol

Yes. I have 1 pea coat to wear with jeans and will buy another, longer dressy coat to wear with dresses and skirts. I have a "puffer" coat for really cold days.
I also have several "leather" jackets that I can wear with all of the above, as well as sporty type jackets when being very casual.

I never thought about it, but I have a lot of coats - 17 that I can think of. I should probably get rid of most of them, I only wear a few regularly.

So I would return your coat, not because you have too many, but you don't love it and you can keep warm without it, This is where I am struggling. Last year, my coat was in really bad shape (discolored from sun?) and I looked all over for a new coat around Christmas time. Only found one that I liked. Got it, but ended up hating it because it sheds feathers all over me so when I take it off I look like I just rolled around in feathers. I bought the one this year thinking that I would keep looking and return if I found something better but so far haven't, although I did since buy the casual one. I remember that I also have a few pea coats that aren't very stylish anymore and haven't worn them for a few years. I could wear those to a dressier event in a pinch.

I have 2 short coats now, and really only wear one of them. No long coats. When we lived in the PNW I wore a Land's End Stadium coat. I do have jackets, both casual and suit type. It's still hot in Lower Alabama.

I think that sounds normal for our climate. It sounds like your saying you have two winter coats, a couple of jackets and some fleece.
I've got two puffy ski coat/jackets (one is more lightweight and one is heavy winter) One dressier wool coat One fleece jacket (school logo) One jean jacket
I had a leather coat and another dressy wool coat that were way too big that I donated last year.
I am sure I'd have more fleece, but I just started buying fleece again. Our dog, who was a horrible shedder, passed away, so we can wear fleece in this house again.

I have several. One for each of the many seasons we have so I guess I'm not helping much.

Ugh. Down coats that shed are the pits.
I see your problem. The coats that I have that are work/event appropriate are from the North Face (the long down coat, doesn't shed) and J.Crew (both wool coats). I have had all of them for a while and all are in great shape. I do not know what either store has this winter, but if you haven't checked those places, consider it -- one of the J.Crew coats is one that I have had since the 90s and looks like it just came home from the store.

I have casuals, but nothing dressy. It really doesn't get that cold where I live and if it does I don't go out.
Black Leather (Mid thigh) - way out of style, it's from the late 90's! Denim Black Fleece Rain parka Barn coat 2 for Snowboarding/Snowshoeing
ETA: I'd really like to get a nice wool coat or belted coat for special occasions

If you are including fleece and down jackets I probably have at least 15 and I wear most of them.
I even plan on adding a sleek black leather jacket to the collection this year.

Does the one with the most win? You made me go look and not counting hoodies and fleece I have 28. Full length dressy to just below the waist and everything in between. There isn't an event or a weather condition I don't have covered.

Ok, I don't feel so bad now. Still can't decide whether or not to keep this coat. I wish I had a little more time to look before I had to decide. I hate that you can only return things for 30 days at TJMaxx.. We have a Burlington opening up here soon. Wonder if they will have some options that I like?

I have four that you would class as a sensible winter coat and far too many jackets to count (I love jackets <3) I also have chunky jumpers and cardigans that I'll wear if it's not too cold.

You know how some people like purses or shoes? I'm a coat person. I have no idea how many I have. I'd guess 20 not including jackets and fleeces.

I'm in TX, have one actual coat. I do have 3-4 jackets, that I wear. In fact, the only person in my family who has multiple coats- and more jackets than I care to count- is my DH, he's a Cleveland Indians fan and most of his are team wear. We apparently can't ever get rid of anything with Cleveland on it once we've acquired it, otherwise I'd have him pare them down...

I have one really nice coat DH gave me that I wear for special occasions. I gave all my old coats/jackets to a group who were collecting them for the homeless.
ETA: I also have a *puffy* mid-calf length, really cold weather coat that DH also gave me. I call it my Nanook of the North coat. It looks ridiculous but keeps me totally warm when we have 20-30 degree weather.

I have a grey wool coat, with pleats that I usually wear in the winter. I also have an old London Fog cloth coat that is really warm (my mom's old coat), so it is my polar vortex coat I have a fleece jacket and a warm vest.
Canada can be very cold in the winter.
One of the major dry-cleaners in my area collects old coats, will clean them at no cost and then will give them to the 'Out of the Cold' programme that is run in our city.

None.
I live on the TX Gulf Coast and I've always been able to get by with layering and jackets. But there have been a few nights when I was out and really wish I had an actual coat. I think this year I'll buy one since it's early and there's still a decent selection to be had, and pre-season sales going on.

1 really heavy coat, we only really use them in Dec and Jan, maybe Feb when it gets wet and bitter cold. I usually use it when I travel up to Utah for the holidays. I have sweaters and a few long shirts but that's about it.

I have 4. Lightweight for fall/spring when it's not too cold yet (I have one for chores and one for everything else) and heavy for when it's freezing out (one for chores, one for everything else).

I just weeded through and donated quite a few fall jackets and winter coats, simply because we are short on space. For actual winter I have two long, dressier wool winter coats. I have a long Persian lamb coat. I have two shorter wool peacoats. I have a longer mohair coat. I have a short mink jacket. For transitioning, I have a jean jacket, a black suede jacket, a blue suede jacket, a lime green suede jacket, a few thicker blazers, a long trench coat, a shorter trench coat, a faux leather jacket, a thigh length houndstooth jacket, three long cardigans and several shorter cardigans. Any of these can be used spring or fall. I used to also have and just donated another jean jacket, a brown wool peacoat, a longer trench coat, three suede jackets, a casual winter jacket, some blazers and some sweaters. Dh thinks I still have waaaay too many coats and jackets, lol, but I only kept the ones that I really love and need!

Just one, and a couple of fleece hoodies and one fleece pullover. I have a variety of cardigans too.
I live in northern Virginia where it mostly doesn't get that cold. Last year was the notable exception.
