We are how many weeks into this? Shouldn't most people know mute their microphone when joining meetings with multiple people?
What is your technology / work from home/ school from home vent?

Thank you for the opportunity to vent:
For the love of all that is holy, stop pinging me on Teams when I'm showing 'busy' or 'in a meeting'. Would you barge right on into a conference room to ask me your question if you could see me in there speaking with someone? No, you would not. You would be patient and wait until I walked out. Better yet, you would give me 5 or 10 minutes to use the restroom first before ambushing me with your 'emergency'. Mamma mia.

We can now only use Google Meets, no Zoom and no Hangouts. I work with a student every day and she can’t get on. I had her trained to get on Hangouts(took a week) but she’s just not getting it. She lives with her grandmother who is a lovely person but can’t figure it out either.
The IT company our district contracts with disabled student hangout accounts this weekend and no one told staff. I spent 3 days with frustrated students before we were officially told.

My Zoom vents: turn off your computer notifications when you’re on calls! I don’t need to hear every time you get an email. It’s super easy...one little check box in settings.
Also, if your spouse is in the same room as you and on their own zoom call we can hear him! Or if they are doing yoga behind you, or walking behind you wearing the same shirt we’ve seen them in all week (it’s a distinctive shirt, otherwise probably wouldn’t notice), then you should figure out how to add a virtual background.
Just because you have noise-cancelling headphones on and can’t hear them, doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t hear your kids screaming at each other!
Whew! I feel better! (And sound super bitchy, I’m really not)

DH glared at the oldest for munching on super crunchy chips at the table right next to his work area while he was on a conference call. At first he was clueless. Then he took the bag to his room.

I was told yesterday that I can no longer use Zoom to meet with my students. This was during a Meets staff meeting that was SOOOOO glitchy that it froze on me and I had to exit the meeting by RESTARTING the computer and re-enter the meeting. I missed the ENTIRE thing about Zoom vs. Meets. Oh the irony! Once I was back on it was like old AOL and ICQ days... pixelated video and really difficult to understand sound. It's total bullshit. My 8th grade partner emailed our principal with our concerns about using Meets and she was told that we are forbidden from using Zoom anymore. So... I will NOT be doing any type of live meeting with my students unless I'm directly told to do so. It's horrible.

For the love of all that is holy, stop pinging me on Teams when I'm showing 'busy' or 'in a meeting'. Is it the same person? Ohhhhhh no... it's a surprising number of otherwise very polite and lovely people. If it was just one person I'd 'have a word' with them. It's part of my job to be super helpful and accessible and all, and I suppose this just goes to show how incredibly accessible I have made myself appear! All the time!! It's really a very small vent. I actually work for an amazing company and I have smart, wonderful co-workers who all transitioned to work-from-home. Now I feel a little bit bad for even moaning on a message board! Maybe I just need to go have a shower, LOL!!!

I know there are issues with Zoom, but I haven't heard my students complain, and the last thing I'm planning to do (unless my university directly orders me otherwise) is switch meeting platforms.
I do mute everyone on entrance (as does the host of almost every meeting I attend). There is always that one person who won't mute themselves unless you do it.

You're so cute to think people will ever learn this. Spoken as a long-time remote worker, this will never get better. Even when I wasn't remote, this was always an issue with conference calls. I've heard people flushing toilets, ordering Starbucks, arguing with children/spouses/coworkers, gossiping about coworkers, answering other calls, conducting meetings, belching, farting, and everything else you can imagine. And that was all from a weekly call of senior managers at a national bank. People never learn.

I haven't used any of the platforms for work, but I have for social purposes.
We tried to do a virtual baby shower via WebEx but struggled to turn the hosting over to the expectant couple. So, on the fly, we tried to do Zoom. But by the time everyone got it downloaded and we got them all on-line, we had limited time left in a 40-minute window for free accounts -- at least that's what I understand.
I have done Google Duo with my college friends group and we've had good success with that.

I'd recommend putting yourself on Do Not Disturb rather than updating your status. DND will suppress all notifications until you turn it off, so it doesn't matter if people ping you. I've worked remote for a long time and most people are terrible about updating their status, so most people have learned to ignore it and message regardless.

hahahaha unmuted mic is the "reply all!"
I helped moderate a staff meeting with 60 users on Google Meet at the same time today and MIRACLES HAPPENED because everyone muted their mics. It was... really a miracle.
Usually it's just CHAOS. Haha!
My vent is that I am helping coach distance learning and people contact me on like eleventy billion different platforms for help. At one point today, I was in a Meet and getting: emails, texts, Help Desk tickets, Facebook messages, and Gchat messages at the same time. What a time to be alive.
But, I survived and it's a three day weekend so I will be saying farewell to distance learning for a couple of days and hello to Zoom drinking dates, naps, and puzzles.

I just did a Zoom training session with my trainer and we went a full hour.

We do get to see the babies of staff members as they are often holding them. And it was good to get a peek at the new one just born a couple weeks ago. I do have to laugh or roll my eyes sometimes - the para who always plays with her hair, sitting there playing with her hair and looking like she was bored out of her mind, the husbands and kids who wander in and out, the people who don’t seem to realize we can all see them and their expressions.

Ours is even worse cause we use VOIP connected to Skype for our phones now. So when you join a meeting and call in to get the audio, you have to remember to switch your Skype status to available before you call in (which because it’s connected to your outlook calendar switches automatically to “in a meeting”). Otherwise when it calls you, and it gets “in a meeting” it switches to voicemail, which everyone in the meeting hears. Repeat that at least 5 times before any meeting starts. 😩

Reading this as I'm listening to a volunteer meeting conference call. It's some free conference line system, so the call quality is horrible. There are definitely a couple of people who are not on mute. One person's kid talking to her mom right when mom started her announcement. I'm thinking about hanging up and telling them I couldn't hear anything.

We use Teams at work. If you join a call with X number of folks already on the line you join muted by default.
We all ping each other on Teams chat regardless of status. There is just an expectation that if the person is red or yellow, it might take a bit for a response. I feel no guilt about responding to a Teams chat at a time that is convenient for me.
I think for the most part we have good etiquette on Teams. A bit of dog barking or kids making noises, but that’s expected now with so many folks working from home. I cut everyone some slack.

We use Webex at work and it works well|. It is free and no time limit. You can also use the phone conference for free instead of VoIP.
Also to move the meeting to someone else just move the ball next to the person’s name. Like you are passing the ball.

Oh be patient with us newbies to online meetings. I run a craft studio. No need for online meetings. Got my website adapted pretty quickly so I can sell crafts online and do curbside pickups and deliveries. Figured out how to do online canvas painting classes for kids on FB Live and how to upload them to YouTube afterwards. Yay, me. But Zoom? Never done it!
But yesterday I had 2 Zoom meetings with the 2 women's networking groups I am in. The first was in the studio while I was working on orders. Couldn't figure out how to turn on video and how to turn off audio. Other members helped me. But I had to keep getting up when folks called to tell me they were outside to pick up their crafts. Then the second meeting happened right when I needed to drive across town to deliver a craft kit. So I walk outside carrying my phone, trying to keep my face in the window of the screen, but didn't think to turn off the sound and it was super windy! Someone comments "what's that noise?" Oh, just me, trying to figure this all out. I did figure out to tell everyone I was driving, mute my sound so the google maps comments didn't come through and turn off the video so I could just listen.
