This is terrible. I didn't know Instacart workers could see the tip beforehand, but regardless, I would never take away a tip after the fact at a time like this. We've been tipping 25% or more on anything we do order because I feel the workers deserve it.

😡 this is terrible. I don’t use Instacart but I have been tipping generously for delivery of meals ordered out.
I absolutely agree with this from the article:
“the Instacart worker, said she feels the company should mandate a 10% tip "that sticks no matter what" on all orders until stay-at-home guidance is lifted and only allow people to tip above that should they choose.“

How awful all the way around. After my Walmart delivery fiasco yesterday, I can understand wanting to change a tip (I didn’t). And I also think that Instacart needs to rethink showing the tip ahead of time.

What jerks! I use instacart to shop at Aldi if I have a very busy week. Because it's so cheap I always give a large tip, it's like passing part of the savings along!
I've never yet had a bad insta experience. Every single person has done a great job, for over a year now.

I've only ordered Instacart through the Kroger app, and I leave my tip after the delivery when I get a confirmation email. I'm not sure how to add a tip beforehand.
But that really sucks to bait and switch the shoppers that way with the promise of a big tip. People can be really shitty to each other.
My husband was kind of shocked at how much I was tipping the shoppers, but I had to explain that they get paid per shop, and it takes a while for a big order. From the time my shopper started until the time the groceries arrived was almost 2 hours. They deserve a very fair wage for being out there when we can't.
I asked DH, how much would someone have to pay *you* to go on a 2 hour trip to the supermarket right now? He got my point...

Those people are literally risking their lives for customers. I hope that Instacart increases pay/tips automatically, but I also hope they bounce customers from the app.

I think it depends where you live, but here, Kroger home delivery uses Instacart. They may do it differently in other places. After my delivery is made I get an email with a link to the receipt, asking to rate the experience, asking if certain substitutions were okay, and then a place to adjust the tip. And it gives a suggested amount plus choices for 10%, 20%, and enter your own amount. I've only ordered Instacart through the Kroger app, and I leave my tip after the delivery when I get a confirmation email. I'm not sure how to add a tip beforehand. That sucks. The last instacart order I was able to get, I doubled my normal tip. It was a MADHOUSE when my shopper/driver (it was the same guy) was there, and he kept updating me and sending me pictures. I was very grateful. (This was right before the stay at home order was issued).

I use Fred Meyer’s delivery (they do use Instacart) and I can put in a tip amount just before I hit submit. I always tip at least 20%. I haven’t used their pick-up service though so it seems they don’t give you the same option. And yes, some people suck .

No worries, you didn't miss anything! I can't speak about their Delivery service because I don't qualify for it based on where I live.

That's not right. The company should flag accounts that are doing that too often. I can understand someone making a mistake once and changing it, but not repeatedly.

The only grocery pick up around here is wegman’s and I opted out. Once you hit the button for pick up they add a little more than %20 to the prices of the items. Now, I have no issue paying the actual shopper but that isn’t what the app shows happening. It shows the prices of the actual items as higher prices. Frankly, I have no idea how well or not wegman’s is paying their workers and the items were priced higher than other stores to begin with. I have no issue with a %25 tip that the actual shopper gets but I have no need to feed the corporate machine. They need to make this crystal clear on their app where the money is going.

Omg, that’s just awful.
People who do that should be blacklisted.
I haven’t used instacart or delivery, but I have been tipping over and above for curbside.

That is crappy on the part of those customers. I think if you add the tip beforehand you should not be able to change it With Shipt, you tip after you receive the order so you know what youve gotten and how much it cost.

I used Costco Instacart for the first time yesterday. The tip was added into my total bill before I checked out. In addition, the prices were higher than if I went into Costco myself.
My order from Costco was over $500. The preset tip was close to $30. Does the Instacart employee also get a cut of the total grocery bill? Just wondering how they get paid with the Costco service because that would be a TON of work compared to just running into the grocery store.

Absolutely not- we only get a small payment from Instacart. We rely on tips. Instacart marks up every item around 11% and makes a ton of money. We don't have a Costco in my zone. I've shopped Sam's a couple of times, but usually don't take those batches- usually too many heavy items. I've haven't been tip- baited, yet. It's a crappy thing to do, especially now. The majority of my customers are great and are happy to have their shopping done.

But I'm not understanding, how are shoppers allowed to pick which "tickets" they will do based on the tip? So shoppers are picking only ones with high tips listed, and not picking up orders from low/zero orders? I wonder if that is why people are putting in high tips so they get their orders. I've never used Instacart so I'm not familiar with how it works, but isn't this similar problem Uber had years ago. The drivers were seeing the final destination before they picked up the customers, and if it wasn't a "good" ride, they wouldn't pick them up. Now they only see the destination once they accept the ride, and only allowed to decline two rides a day. I had a drive tell me all about it on a long-ride one time.

Warehouse shopping is a lot of work just pushing those enormous carts around and then combine it with the heavy items.

I hope those people who change their tip are pushed to the bottom of a list, or blacklisted. I can understand a mistake, but these people are risking their lives too. Disgusting.

Those people suck majorly. How would they like if their employer hired them at agreed wage and when payday came, they changed their mind and paid them next to nothing? People like that believe that will never happen to them because they are too smart for it to happen. They think they can never be fooled or taken advantage of. They are very smug and arrogant and enjoy screwing someone over be because it makes them feel smart and superior. I also know people who believe ripping people off is part of life. It as happened to them and they just accept it as normal and do it to others because they believe everyone does it. Even when confronted with the reality that they are in the minority, they refuse to believe it.

Do you get a flat fee per order? No -it varies, but I don't think anyone knows how the batches are calculated. The least amount is $7 and goes up a little by item count and/or heavy items. Also, 0.60/mile after a certain amount of miles. They also add "peak boosts" in $2 increments (up to $12 I think) if a batch sits long enough without being accepted.

I just placed my first actual Instacart order through the app. Fred Meyer uses Instacart shoppers but you can go through Fred Meyer’s own site to shop. There were a few things at Costco that we’ve been missing and I placed an order for about eight items. They were at my door in less than 90 minutes, so I must have picked a good time. I was very pleased with the experience and tipped accordingly.
I’m so glad for this service and the people willing to do it. It’s definitely pricey but for now it’s worth it to me.
