I just placed my first actual Instacart order through the app. Fred Meyer uses Instacart shoppers but you can go through Fred Meyer’s own site to shop. There were a few things at Costco that we’ve been missing and I placed an order for about eight items. They were at my door in less than 90 minutes, so I must have picked a good time. I was very pleased with the experience and tipped accordingly. I’m so glad for this service and the people willing to do it. It’s definitely pricey but for now it’s worth it to me. Wow! Same day service! Around here it is about a 7 day wait. I agree, this is a service I had never used before yesterday but my dad has been self quarantining and has been relying on the Fred Meyer Instacart service for 100% of his needs for the last 17 days. Incredible service!!

I must have just got lucky, I’m not sure if it will happen again .

My order from Costco was over $500. The preset tip was close to $30. Does the Instacart employee also get a cut of the total grocery bill? Just wondering how they get paid with the Costco service because that would be a TON of work compared to just running into the grocery store. Absolutely not- we only get a small payment from Instacart. We rely on tips. Instacart marks up every item around 11% and makes a ton of money. We don't have a Costco in my zone. I've shopped Sam's a couple of times, but usually don't take those batches- usually too many heavy items. I've haven't been tip- baited, yet. It's a crappy thing to do, especially now. The majority of my customers are great and are happy to have their shopping done. This is what I was afraid of when Wegman’s added over %20 cost to each item. I’d be fine if the shopper got %25 but for the corporation to make that much extra bothers me

Wait, if we shop at a Kroger store are we using instacart? If so where do you even leave a tip? I have been using Fred Meyer pick up and I have never seen a spot for a tip. Yikes! Fred Meyer doesn't allow tips on their Click List (pick up at store) service! No worries, you didn't miss anything! I can't speak about their Delivery service because I don't qualify for it based on where I live. Thank you and to everyone else who replied, I was so worried! I just do pick up because it is easy and gets me out of the house for 15-20 minutes. I was feeling terrible that I hadn’t tipped anyone.

I just tip the driver generously when they drop off the order - about 40% given everything that is going on. I also prefer the shopper get the tip immediately. Does the low preset tip impact my order getting filled? Do shoppers prefer cash tips?

Does the low preset tip impact my order getting filled? Do shoppers prefer cash tips? The preset tip is set at 5% of your order total. I'm not sure if you can change it before or during shopping, but you definitely have 3 days after delivery to alter it. If you do change it then, enter the total amount that you want to tip- not the amount you want to add on. The app changes it to the amount entered- it won't add. Yes- shoppers will look for the highest paying batches, item count, heavy items, and distance. Cash tips are greatly appreciated (and not taxed) but we have no way of knowing before we shop. Thank you for appreciating your shopper!

I have a different take on the issue. I agree that the people are wrong to reduce the tips. What I am unhappy with is the InstaCart business model. I only tried it once about 18 months ago and quite frankly was surprised at the extra charge InstaCart added to every item. It certainly wasn’t made clear in their advertisements that enticed me to try it. Then to discover I had to tip too was a surprise. The woman delivery my order wasn’t exactly Miss Congeniality when I questioned why the amount was higher than I expected. I am just not comfortable with Instacarts business model. On NextDoor in my neighborhood, people are posting about this as people try the service for the first time...how you have to pay substantially more than the store prices, they are surprised. So after my first and only InstaCart order, I switched to Walmart pickup...no fee and no tips...and until this virus hit, found it to be excellent for the last 18 months. It spoils you and saves you a lot because you seldom impulse buy. Unfortunately, Walmart has become very unreliable during this crisis. Out of necessity this month, I tried Winn Dixie that uses SHIPT rather than InstaCart...$14 up front for a month...it has been excellent. It’s $89 for an entire year if you refer someone. I will continue to use it. I have them put the order in my garage so there is no personal contact and you don’t even have to sign for it. You add the tip when you evaluate the experience. The SHIPT employees have been very efficient and great to deal with.

I didnt change the tip (left cash in an envelope on the garage floor) but my driver told me she got $55 of that! Was she not telling the truth?

The SHIPT employees have been very efficient and great to deal with. Instacart and Shipt are both third party providers. They are resellers of groceries. Unless they have a partnership with the store (it varies) where the store is giving them a discount, they have to markup what they sell to you in order to make any money. I’ve never understood why people object to this. I do agree that in some stores the markup is too high, but to expect them to be able to sell it to you at cost (again, barring a partnership) doesn’t make sense to me.

That's just awful. I can't believe someone would do that!
I don't even know if that kind of thing exists here in my little city. I'm going to have to check around because if it does, I will 100% use it.

They should add ratings to customers like uber. Shoppers will figure out quickly which assholes to avoid.

I'm supposed to get my first Instacart (through Fred Meyer) order today because I couldn't get a pick-up spot. It's supposed to be here between 9 and 10 (in 15 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes). So far I haven't received any notices that they've got my order or started to assemble it. I did add a tip to the original order and since I can't modify it for some reason, I have an envelope with more waiting on my porch.
I really hope my food arrives, last night I went to make dinner and somehow I miscounted our planned dinners and we were eating something that resembled a dish from an episode of Chopped. Not fun!

Was she not telling the truth? $55 of what? Some stores have shoppers and then a different delivery person, so the tip is split somehow. She definitely didn't get a set percentage of your order unless it was 5% default tip-which is like $9.

I read this early this morning whenI couldn’t sleep. I was thoroughly disgusted by the people who pulled their tips. If toilet paper can’t be found anywhere, you don’t punish the delivery person by withholding their tip.

Do you get a flat fee per order? No -it varies, but I don't think anyone knows how the batches are calculated. The least amount is $7 and goes up a little by item count and/or heavy items. Also, 0.60/mile after a certain amount of miles. They also add "peak boosts" in $2 increments (up to $12 I think) if a batch sits long enough without being accepted. Please help me understand this a bit better. You are being paid $7.00 per order and then after so many items or heavier items, you get an increase. You are also paid 0.60/mile to deliver this order. Is that all that you are being paid to do this work? Is the work actually worth what you are being paid? Grocery shopping is crazy these days. Do require additional insurance on your car because you are in the delivery business?

A quick google brought this up and might answer some of your questions: gigworker.com/how-much-does-instacart-pay/

Just got a Shipt order delivered. Very good service. Actually arrived early. All items arrived except toilet paper. Prices were the store prices...no additional percentage was added. This is part of the $14 a month fee. No contact as everything was delivered to the front porch and did not have to sign for it.

The first time I handed the lady cash for the tip but once I learned the system, you are sent a survey as to your experience with a photo of the person who did your order with a section for comments. There is a tipping section you just check. No tipping until after the order has been delivered. Minimum for free shipping is a $35 order which is very easy to reach. No mention of how many orders you can do in the month covered by the $14 charge. I find the employees very professional.

Do require additional insurance on your car because you are in the delivery business? We are paid by the batch which is the order(s). For example, here's what I did today with just Instacart's payment: Batch 1 $9.60 for 39 items (42 units) 2.1 mi Batch 2 (2 orders) $9.92 for 39 items (50 units) 4 mi Batch 3 $9.66 for 43 items (48 units) 1.2 mi Batch 4 $12.47 51 for items (56 units) 3.4 mi Took me 5.5 hrs to complete so $7.57/hr from Instacart With tips added in I made $16.88/hr, so we definitely rely on tips. It was just an average day. So far this week I've made $19.71/hr. I haven't heard anything about insurance. I just started last November. I'm a retired teacher who got bored and needed a flexible job. scrappinghappy Wow- that's a huge Instacart payment. I've never seen anything like that here, but we just have Sam's.

This is part of the $14 a month fee. No contact as everything was delivered to the front porch and did not have to sign for it. You’re just incorrect. There may not be a markup on that particular store because they have a partnership with them. But in other stores where they don’t, there absolutely is a markup because they are essentially reselling the groceries to you. They can’t possibly make enough money to run corporate, develop the app, and pay shoppers fairly on membership alone. FTR you can order as many times as you want for your membership fee. Shipt shoppers are paid one of two ways. The “new” way is secret and is similar to the Instacart method that calculates volume, time, and distance. In my market, we get 7.5% of the register total (not the marked up price) plus $5. So before tip, a $35 order pays just under $8. Before you factor in gas and vehicle wear and tear.
