It’s asparagus season here in California. The Asparagus Festival has been canceled so growers are selling it cheap. Husband claims to LOVE the smell of pee after eating asparagus. I told him I’ve never smelled it and smelling it and peeing it is genetic. He didn’t believe me. So... that got us researching it. Yep, it’s genetic. I’m curious about who is what now.

IF you can't smell it how do you know you don't pee it?

IF you can't smell it how do you know you don't pee it? BIG discussion in our house. Ended with DH standing in the toilet room face to the corner breathing deeply while I peed. I am a shy pee-er. He inhaled deeply over the bowl before I flushed also. He’s weird.

I smell it and I pee it. If I had asparagus for dinner, I would still be able to smell it in my pee the next morning, even after about 4 pees. I hate the smell so much that I rarely eat asparagus.

Asparagus is one of the only vegetables I dislike, so I don't know about my smelling or peeing situation with it!

I don’t actually understand the question. Can I smell asparagus? Like when I cook it and it on my plate? Or can I smell asparagus-y pee?
I can smell asparagus. I’m going to say no on the pee but it’s probably because I rarely eat it and if I do it’s a really small amount. I don’t care for it.

I wonder if the asparagus gene is related to the cilantro gene in any way? I have the asparagus gene, but not the cilantro one. Cilantro tastes to me like dirty soapy socks smell.

It is a confusing question. I think what you are asking is:
Can I smell it when I pee after eating it? Yes Can I smell it when others pee after eating it? Yes
Do I think it’s gross that I know I can smell it when others pee? Yes 😁😁

Yes & yes.
But, ummm, I don't love the smell. It's not "make a candle scent" worthy, or anything.

I LOVE asparagus, but I hate the pee smell. I wish I couldn't smell that, and I'd happily eat asparagus day after day during the season. Roasted with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper.

We love asparagus. We eat it a lot when it’s fresh. Yes I smell it later. But I wouldn’t know if I smell it from others, I don’t make it habit to be in the bathroom at those times.

Yes I smell it & pee it. I once mentioned the pee effect to DH & he apparently doesn't smell it. I have not ventured to sniff to see if he pees it or not. Okay, this is not a statement I ever thought I'd be typing on the internet.

I don’t eat it, so I don’t pee it. LOL
I do take a bone joint supplement that turns my pee bright highlighter yellow.

It smells strong raw and/or cooked?? I mean I can smell it like a garden fresh cucumber, mild, slightly stronger when cooked. Or you mean strong like cooking broccoli? I don't smell that. I know my pee doesn't smell. I'm voting no and no.

I shouldn't have opened this thread! I thought it was recipes for asparagus! I don't think I ever want to eat asparagus again after reading this thread! And we have so much of it in the refrigerator!

That is interesting about the genetic thing. I had never smelled it and wondered what people were talking about.
Learned something today.

What’s crazy is I used to eat a lot of asparagus as a kid and didn’t have any pee smell. I didn’t eat a ton of asparagus as a college student/early 20s. Now, whenever I eat asparagus, I have the smell in my urine. It’s weird that my body comp changed.

I will put up with stinky pee as an unfortunate temporary side effect because I love asparagus. I wish I didn't smell it.
