Let's post and celebrate scrapbook companies and designers who include diversity and inclusion in their lines. Whether that's papers/embellishments for POC, LGBT+, showing all sizes and shapes of bodies, showing people with disabilities, or in other ways validating and celebrating all humans on the planet, not just a small subset. I'll start - The Prima Surfboard Line Beautiful papers and images. Whatcha got? Papers? Stamps? Ideas? Wishlists?

Since I was just on her site, it reminded me that Geralyn from IACB tries to include multiple skintone options when she includes people. Like in her winter cards below. I think she also did one they was...yoga related(?) that also had multiple skintones for the girl.

With the following the companies listed can do much better, but there is a nod to diversity. And I mean a tip of the chin nod. There are no Asian people except as a Japanese tradition like Paper Crane, Hispanic - maybe. And size? Skinny only. Disabilities - one HL sticker with a woman in a wheelchair. Echo Park Let's Be Mermaids echoparkpaper.com/collections/lets-be-mermaids/ and one of the Princess lines. First Responders Card kit photoplaypaper.com/firstresponderscardkitPhoto Play Best Friends photoplaypaper.com/bestfriends and School Days photoplaypaper.com/school-days#group-4, and Real Genius photoplaypaper.com/real-genius, Photo Play is trying hard but even in the Best Friends collection - it's white women and a woman of color together Julie Nutting Graphic 45 Portrait of a Lady paperiah.blogspot.com/2017/01/graphic-45-portrait-of-lady-album.html and a baby line with dark skinned babies and the same version with light skinned babies MAMBI figures and die cuts - always has had diversity in their stick kids and other products, and MMI - those die cut kids from way back. Hobby Lobby Elle Oh Elle collections and Paper Studio Now through the years I've seen one paper here and there, or a sticker sheet. I hate to say it but I think HL has done more with this lately.

Kaisercraft "Oh Happy Day!" Birthday line has women of size on their dancing ladies birthday paper. (This, opposed to Maggie Holmes beach paper, where the women are all unnaturally thin and wearing bikinis)

Let’s be sure to keep this thread going as we see more releases. Amen. Now more than ever. I hope the world is waking up. I hope the scrapbook community is waking up. Not everyone is white. That is something to celebrate, not hide.

From Kelly Purkey this AM:
I wanted to take a minute to send a message letting you, as a customer & supporter of my business, know where I (and in turn the KP Shop) stand on the issues of racial injustice being loudly confronted right now. The past couple of days I've been posting on the shop Instagram account, but I felt it was also important to come straight to your inbox in case you've missed them.
Watching the video of George Floyd being murdered both breaks my heart & makes me incredibly angry. I'm standing in solidarity against the systemic racism and racial injustice in this country, and saying out loud that Black lives matter. I promise to be more aware, do better, and do what I can do be an advocate. I'm reading, asking questions (especially to myself about my own anti-racist thoughts & actions), and listening. I hope you'll join me.
I have long recognized the lack of diverse representation in the scrapbook & paper craft industry. I thought to myself that I was doing a good job of correcting that in my own business, but I understand it hasn't been enough and promise to work harder to change that. I'm asking for your help in doing this and will always be here to listen and do what I can to take action alongside you.
Through June 15th, all profits from shop sales will be donated to Color of Change. After doing some research, I've also made personal donations to Black Lives Matter Global Network and Black Visions Collective. If you haven't already, I encourage you to read up on organizations and donate if you are able.
And I want to link Anti Racism Project, which is an incredible resource for articles, books, films, etc. that are helpful for learning more about the history of racism in America and becoming anti-racist. Earlier this year I dove into Stamped from the Beginning and recommend it as a good place to start. There is also Stamped, a version of the book that's been edited for young adult readers.
I have more to share about shop restocks & sales, Pride month, an update on quarantine products & donations, but that's not what the focus is on right now. If you have any questions, please reach out via email any time. Thank you for listening and stay safe.

I hope the world is waking up. I hope the scrapbook community is waking up. Not everyone is white. That is something to celebrate, not hide. I would love to also support minority crafting businesses and design teams that are more diverse. If people know of them and links can be provided, that would be great. I am also actively looking for businesses to support, and more diverse crafting channels to support (via patreon, etc..)

Important thread alert!
We must keep this one alive and going. The Christmas collections will start dripping through the scrappy percolator soon. Let's keep our eyes open for better representation in both products and design teams!

What I would also love to see compiled is a list of black artists to follow on social media for inspiration- paper crafting or otherwise. With the #blackouttuesday and the #muted movement is supposed to create space to amplify the voices of POC on social media, it doesn’t do us much good if our feeds are filled by mostly white women posting black squares and we don’t push ourselves beyond that. That’s going to be my challenge for today- discover and explore black artists/graphic designers/creatives so I’m hearing other voices and not just quieting my own.

I’ll start with a YouTuber who I really like - she is a former makeup artist and also does quilting. I LOVE her papercraft projects; she gifts quilts to friends and makes matching cards that are unbelievable. Her YouTube channel name is M A Couture Crafting. Her website is www.macouturecrafting.com/blog

PaperHouse has been sneak peeking their line This is Us for a few weeks now. They collaborated with a lot of crafters/designers. It’s supposed to hit Michaels stores this summer.

Saddening how short this thread is. We have more examples of holiday papers or travel lines than people lines. Inclusive people lines. We could barely scrape together a page.

I believe Tazhi also has a youtube channel but I prefer instagram. I'd be interested in finding other new artists as well!

We had a thread where diversity and representation in scrapbooking became a topic but the actual discussion wasn't dedicated to the subject. @zingermack started one for us. There are far more SB lines that have been trying to include more skin colours and body shapes, especially in the past 12-18 months. Crate Paper's Christmas collections have featured dark skins for the past three years. I think we're going to pick up in this thread with current releases, that's all. There's more on the market, I promise! It's still not enough but by sharing what's being released in here, we can buy to express our support and even email companies to let them know we appreciate their decisions for their new designs. If you're looking for recently released stuff, My Mind's Eye's One Of A Kind was also featured in the thread I mentioned above for both body shape and skin colour.

While not specific to memorykeeping, on Instagram the accounts blackgirlswhopaint and blackgirlsillustrate showcase some incredible work and is a good jumping off point for exploring some new to me voices.
I’m going to keep learning and listening and hopefully will have more inspiration and sources to share!
ETA- the hashtag #blackwomenwhoplanandcreate on IG is full of gorgeous spreads and has some artists who make stickers representing women of color.

A suggestion for any scrapbook brands or designers who might come across this: consider making a pattern paper's A and B-sides the same design with different skin tones and/or body shapes. Just start out with one in the collection and see how customers respond. My bet is that it'll sell. Consider this especially for characters we're so used to seeing with only one skin tone (white, of course) such as Santa, the elves and Mrs. Claus in the Christmas lines. It would be wonderful for POC to be able to have such an important figure and ever-present scrapbook fixture represented in a way that's also directly relatable to them.
Small changes like this have a big impact, especially in books that are meant to be handed down and carry the story of the family.

I have barely dug into her grid yet but yes, her film photography is exquisite. I can’t believe I haven’t seen her work before now. Her grid looks like exactly the kind of account I would enjoy. She is sharing other black artists and creators in her stories today. I found some cool photography and planner accounts to follow. Tazhi does have YT as well. I have watched a couple of her Covid journal videos. I’m interested to see more of her work and see if her IG or YT is more my thing.
