Wouldn’t that make the bed hotter to sleep in, thus making the sleeper even sweatier and stinkier? I wouldn’t be able to tolerate sleeping on a vinyl pad even if it was underneath the sheets. 🥵🥵🥵 I would seriously die from the heat! This is the same for me. I’ve slept on vinyl covered mattress pads at scout camp and it was miserable. I get way too hot sleeping with normal bedding. Not a problem for us at all. Maybe I am describing it wrong. It's this light plastic mattress cover that we cover with a mattress pad. I put one on our bed and my husband couldn't even tell it was there.

Opening windows does not always work, especially in the summer when it’s 90+ degrees. I have 2 dogs and worry about smells all the time. I use a vinegar/water room spray, and will boil vinegar on the stovetop. Vinegar and lemons are the best for natural deodorizers. I also agree with avoiding the laundry piles and washing ALL bedding.

We have vinyl mattress covers that are wonderful! We were given that tip when my daughters were toddlers and moved into a bed. I wipe the vinyl mattress cover every week when I wash the sheets.
I wash the mattress cover, sheets and bedspreads every week. We also change pillow cases every couple of days.
I don’t know about hers but mine has a mattress pad on top of the vinyl cover. So no, you wouldn’t know your sleeping on vinyl. The mattress pad is washable

I initially bought a Germ Guardian air purifier for my DD’s room to help battle dust mites because she’s allergic to them, but after running it in her room with the door closed for a half day, I already noticed a significant difference. The air definitely smelled fresher in there, and her room was actually clean before that. I never noticed any funk smell prior, but there was a definite difference in the air quality after I started running it. I liked the results so much that I bought a second one for the master bedroom, and last winter I bought a third one for our family room which is right off the kitchen. If something stinky is being cooked we can turn it on high and it will take the smells out of the air. Thanks so much for posting about this! I'm going to check into getting this. My husband and daughter both have severe allergies and I am very allergic to dust. For right now, with us being home, it is easy for me to vacuum every day and it has made a huge difference. However, once we are able to go out more, I can't see myself being able to vacuum as frequently. This sounds like something that would help us a lot.

However, once we are able to go out more, I can't see myself being able to vacuum as frequently. This sounds like something that would help us a lot. I can visibly SEE that there is less dust in DD’s room, even floating in the air. I keep her windows and doors closed mostly (although she has no outdoor allergies to pollen, etc.) and I can tell it definitely helps. I keep her room vacuumed, wash all her bedding weekly but the air purifier really sucks a lot of junk out of the air. One of the things I didn’t realize until I bought the second one was that you should vacuum the dust off of the black filter thing inside monthly. When I took the cover off of DD’s (which hadn’t been done in 3 months) the dust was literally 1/4” thick in there. Now I just do it automatically to all three of them around the first of the month so I don’t forget.

When changing bedding, vacuum the mattress then spray it with an odor neutralizer. We use Skouts Honor pet stain and odor remover. We also use Lysol Neutra air for the rooms. Open windows if you can. If you are using AC make sure your filter has been cleaned or replaced. Make sure there aren’t hidden socks and shoes tucked under things. Make sure people are doing their laundry regularly.
I have 3 teenage boys and they share a room. 2 work in food service and one is an athlete. I have stories about boy funk that will make your hair curl. We also live in an old house that has its own smells. We do a lot of cleaning, spraying and vacuuming. And I keep the windows open as much as possible.

Open windows if possible, but it tends to be too cold or too hot most of year. Not many in between days. For air fresheners, I prefer Febreze spray. I like the light blue and orange colors. I can't remember the names.
For smells that can be extremely nasty, I've found a zesty orange scent or a strong cinnamon in a wax warmer covers up the smell quickly. I'm fan of fall scents all year long like pumpkin, apple, and cinnamon (not too strong), but that's just a personal preference.

Open all the windows as much as you can and air out the funk. I spritz white vinegar around before we go to bed every now and then. Wash the soft things often....dog beds, blankets, etc. I do laundry almost every day. I'm always washing things that they lay on. I got an air purifier and I swear it helps SO much. which one did you get? www.hammacher.com/product/mold-and-germ-destroying-air-purifier-650-sq-ft-1?source=GOOGLECAT&cm_ven=googlecatI ordered from this site specifically because they have a lifetime guarantee on everything they sell.

No dirty clothes left in room, no food anywhere besides kitchen. I vacuum daily (we have indoor cats), and I use bleach water to clean.

I’m sure when he was in the dorm he never washed his bedding, and that can’t be the case here) LOL - I hear ya! When he moved home for the summer, I said just throw those dorm sheets out.

Once our kids got beyond the teen years, things were much better. Just keeping coats and shoes outside in the garage kept the smells at bay. When I cook, I open the back door anytime possible. When I smell my pets, they go for baths.

Haha, I have lots of girl funk stories to share too! I can't complain to my mom because she said I was just as bad as a teen! Yes, great idea about changing air filters often. We even got our air ducts cleaned last year to help with the smell. We would go out of town for a week, come home and our house smelled terrible. The air duct cleaning helped.
Two of my daughters work in health care (a nursing student and a pct getting hours for Physician Assistant masters degree), 2 are athletes. What I have the daughters that work in health care do is change out of their uniforms in the garage, bag up dirty scrubs, take a shower, then put dirty clothes in washer. They also sit on towels in the car to protect the interior, and that gets washed with the scrubs. That helps a lot with keeping the work smelly clothes out of their bedroom.

Shoe dryer. My ds shoes were bad. Smelled a whole room. Once I used a shoe dryer things got a lot better Which shoe dryer do you recommend? My daughters used to love Sperrys shoes, but they smelled so bad, no matter what we tried. They got expensive to replace so often. I love flip flop season because that helps with the foot odor! And socks are a must with any tennis shoes, etc.

Thanks. Will try this. DS’s room is the worst. He’s been insisting on cleaning it himself 😀 but I may have to advise him on some heavy duty cleaning so it gets done thoroughly. I hadn’t thought of an air cleaner unit. I had one in my room as a kid and it helped. I’m sure technology has improved since then. I initially bought a Germ Guardian air purifier for my DD’s room to help battle dust mites because she’s allergic to them, but after running it in her room with the door closed for a half day, I already noticed a significant difference. If something stinky is being cooked we can turn it on high and it will take the smells out of the air. I am interested, after reading your post. I can't stand kitchen cooking smells after I eat (even good things). The Fresh Wave gels help with cooking smells but I would love trying something new. Are they expensive? I would like one for the kitchen/family room, and all of the bedrooms. Maybe one for the dining room too, as we have a German Shepherd and that's where she loves to lay on her dog mat and look outside.

Another vote for room air purifiers. We have a Winix unit in each bedroom and we all notice an improvement in air quality when they are in use - especially with allergens like dust and cat fur. For now, they are turned off because we have the windows open. We bought them at Costco.
I tend to notice the house smells when it's humid.

I have the germ guardian air purifiers and they are awesome. I have two for my 1300 sq ft house and they’re enough. It’s crazy the amount of dust they pull out. Occasionally I turn on the UV light too. I do open windows occasionally for a fresh exchange.
I had noticed my clothes had a musty stale body odor smell recently even after cleaning my washer. I’ve started adding a half cup of borax to all my laundry. It’s made a big difference. My husband even asked me what I had been doing because his towels smelled better. Less than $5 and it’s been whitening my whites too.

We have three of the Germ Guardian 4 in 1 air purifiers from Target, they were about $85 not on sale (but we lucked out and got one on sale for a little less). Costco sometimes sells them too I think in a two pack. I wish I would have seen that when we could have used two, but by that time I only needed one more and didn’t want to spend $200. The Costco deal included extra replacement filters which was why it was a little more. The filters run about $30 each and have to be replaced roughly every six months. We run them on low in our bedroom and the family room 24/7. I run the one in DD’s room on low all the time too except when I’m in there cleaning and changing her sheets, then I turn it up higher with her door closed until she goes to bed to collect any excess dust floating around in the air from vacuuming and cleaning.

If they're like most kids their shoes might be the stinky culprit. Wash what you can and sprinkle baking soda or spray them.
Also check to see if there is food stashed anywhere. That's another situation that can be stink-o.

We bought a robot vac and it makes a huge difference in the amount of dust, especially since it can go under a lot of places that were too low for my vacuum.

Granted, I was the only one to smell it, and all of them ended up with my MIL who loves them. I don’t smell it at her house, but, honestly her 8 cats overwhelm all the senses. We moved into a house with carpet in the majority of it. It’s high quality stuff, but I haven’t lived in a house with carpet in years and years. Add in my paranoia of smells, a kitchen open to the main living area, living in the swamp of the St Louis area where open windows thru most of summer can’t happen, and I’m ready to try air purifiers again. So that was my long winded way of asking if anyone posting about your air purifiers have noticed this smell? I’d love to try the Germ Guardians, I’m also highly allergic to dust, and it sounds like it’s really helped you DD. Feel free to inform me I’m weird as hell smelling the electrical smell of our old purifiers. My family has all ready informed me of that

We used to have a couple different Ecobox air purifiers and the big one did give off a pretty strong ozone smell when it was on the away mode. I also bought a couple of smaller HP units for our bedrooms at the lake cabin from a scratch and dent discount place, and the filters on those had a really weird smell at first. I ran them continuously when we were away and the smell went away. I figured for $15 each (normally about $50 retail) it was worth the gamble. They seem to work okay for my purpose but they’re not as great as the Germ Guardians.

Thanks for the teenage boys funk tips. I got the detergent and the germ guardian and there’s a noticeable improvement! I have enjoyed the tips too, as I have 3 daughters! I think if I keep up with the laundry, it has really helped. And airing out the rooms every day.
We bought an air purifier for my husband's office a couple weeks ago. He says it seems pretty good so far. He got the blue air (or something like that. He only buys what consumer reports recommends). We want to get one for all three teen/college girls rooms. And one for the kitchen as I can't stand cooking smells. Hopefully we are on the way to a better smelling house! My husband likes to blame the dog, but I think it's the people, not the dog!

Open doors and windows. I like to open on windy days so fresh air blows through.
I use BBW Wall plugs and BBW three wick candles (both only when I am home, I won't leave them unattended). Caramel Apple scent (seasonal, so I stock up in the fall).
On my carpet, I use the baking soda pet deodorizer before I vacuum.
In bathroom, I have a can of air freshener. Apple cinnamon scent.

We got a whole house fan to use instead of turning on the AC as our evenings cool down. Great side benefit is airing out the house.

Try using vinegar in every load of the boy’s laundry, and you might go so far as to do a laundry stripping process on his sheets and towels to really get all the oils and funk out. Can you tell me more about the laundry stripping process? I've got a house full of teens right now. Pee-yew!
