Please don't rake me over the coals. It's an honest question I have no idea about, and I want to be educated about, as that is a part of us all coming together.
Do other countries have the racism problem the USA has?

other countries have DIFFERENT racism problems than the US has - history plays a big role in the roots of racism and every country's history is different. But I would be surprised if there are many countries where a mix of races/cultures/religions co-exist that don't have some sort of issue between the races/cultures/religions of some sort.

My first response would be to say that No we do not have race issues in Canada like they do in the US. But, as a white woman I easily recognize that I may be delusional and completely wrong about that because I haven't experienced it myself.

Totally anecdotal but when my BFF and her family lived in Calgary for four years, they were shocked by the amount of casual racism they encountered.

I have lived in several countries and witnessed racism in every one of them. Some of the most openly racist people I've met have been from Western European countries. It's everywhere, in varying degrees.

Our history of not only slavery, but Jim Crow laws makes racism in the US particularly ingrained. But most countries have racism. And just an FYI tanya2 - one of the more recent incidents this week in the US - Amy Cooper aka Central Park Karen is Canadian.

There is racism in Japan, especially against Chinese and Koreans residents. Many Koreans have adopted Japanese names to help with assimilation. There is also bias against the Ainus, the native peoples of Northern Japan.
Someone mentioned Canada. I have a friend who lived in the Montreal area. There is a form of cultural racism she said there. It is not against the law to not rent an apartment to someone based on where they are from. And she was sometimes looked down upon and treated badly because of her bad French.

I'm sure racism exists everywhere. I know for sure we have it in Canada. Just look at the recent thread "Another Karen named Amy Cooper". She's Canadian.

I think why it’s less of a daily problem in other countries is because we are more of a melting pot here. It’s not just racism in other countries but xenophobia.
I know there are many people in Asian countries that generally think positively of white people but dislike black people. But it’s less of a daily issue because the vast majority of people in these countries are the same race.
But you can look at some western European countries like France or Italy, that have very strong nationalist views. They were very unhappy about accepting refugees. There’s also quite a bit of Islamophobia.

Oh and another Canadian connection is that the group Proud Boys was started by a Canadian, Gavin McInnes, who immigrated here from the UK at a young age.

One of my grand-daughters did a mission to India through her church. She was routinely excluded from prayer groups, outreach, meals and so on. It was so bad that she cut her 5 month mission short and came home early.

Totally anecdotal but when my BFF and her family lived in Calgary for four years, they were shocked by the amount of casual racism they encountered. I see racism here in Calgary ... simply because we have a population of white men and brown men and Asian men ... there will always be racism ... there are quadrants of the city that cater to certain groups that's for sure ... casual comments are thrown out all the time ... my ex was notorious for that ... he's tall and white and blonde and blue eyed I'm open on the Single Ladies thread about the fact that my FWB is brown ... I find him super hot I teach in a very multicultural school ... if I was racist I would have a lot of trouble doing my job ... I love all of my students We certainly don't have the kind of race issues here in Canada that you have in the USA but racism does exist for sure ... it's sad

I’ve often wondered this as well. I’ve also wondered how things are in Germany now.

I’ve often wondered this as well. It’s hard to believe that other countries didn’t have slavery as well. I’ve also wondered about Germany as well. Do you think argument could be made that being an indentured servant was a form of slavery? I'm not trying to be a smart a**, it's something I've thought about for a long time.

Spain built their entire society around blood quotas and people were specifically identified based on their percentage of races. And I’m sure the Gypsies would have a whole lot to say about Germany’s racism.

It’s hard to believe that other countries didn’t have slavery as well. They did. There was slavery in Great Britain and other countries. There is current day slavery.

Canada has had it for hundreds of years. The Haida people from BC took slaves.

My first response would be to say that No we do not have race issues in Canada like they do in the US. But, as a white woman I easily recognize that I may be delusional and completely wrong about that because I haven't experienced it myself. Oh how I wish that were true. I mean, we don't have the same racism issues because we don't have a society and economy that was based on kidnapping, murder and enslavement of a race of people, with layers of law over time to codify and legitimize the abuse (although it occurs to me that aboriginal people might disagree with this statement). But we definitely still have racism and our own historical crimes we have to answer for. Think of all the Asians killed building the railways through the west, the First Nations and residential schools (and serial killers and on and on), the protests occurring in Toronto today over the death of Regis Korchinski-Pacquet this week. The PPC (People's Party of Canada) was founded just last year and it is breathtakingly racist. The leader of the PPC, Maxime Bernier, was a powerful MP in the Conservative party and nearly won the leadership. Think about that for a moment and read his tweets right now (or maybe don't - it's super disturbing and depressing). And that's just off the top of my head. Because US racism gets so much airtime, and we don't usually see that level of racism in the open, we tend to fool ourselves that Canada is much more kind and gentle than it/we actually are. My two cents.

The Romans had slaves, St Patrick was a slave, the village of Baltimore, West Cork was attacked by slavers. The Sack of Baltimore took place on 20 June 1631, when the village of Baltimore in West Cork, Ireland, was attacked by the Ottoman Algeria and Republic of Salé slavers from the Barbary Coast of North Africa – Moroccans, Dutchmen, Algerians and Ottoman Turks. The attack was the largest by Barbary pirates on either Ireland or Great Britain.[1] en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_BaltimoreRead up on modern slavery, it's never gone away. Sex workers, farm workers, car washers, etc etc. It's hiding in plain sight now. I read somewhere that there are more slaves now than there have ever been. We have cases here of vulnerable people being exploited by gangs and kept in sheds, paid nothing and threatened.

As Europe colonized Africa, parts of Asia, and the Americas, they used the indigenous peoples as slave labor to mine those areas of their resources. They were slave owners just the same. Just look at the comments in any UK publication regarding Meghan Markle for the endless examples of racism and classism. I lived in the Middle East, it’s also an issue there, both racism and religious discrimination.

I agree that slavery didn't orginate in the USA, but it seems like a major talk point with the black community. And I wondered if that was the same in other countries. Maybe because we are the US we hear more about it? I honestly do not know. Then there is the whole Native American population where I am and the racism around them. So it mainly stems from the minority race being kept down I think?

Is there still strong discrimination there?
