Interesting thread. I think it's human nature to be curious about those you live amongst.
One of the town council members lives around the corner and he rides his moped around the block to check for code violations. His full blocks needs to be in tip-top shape! LOL The moment we moved into this house we got at least 4 letters about town code violations. He didn't want to bother the elderly lady who lived her prior.
His neighbor to his back, she is also my neighbor to the back and side, built a new fence that he thought was too close to the street intersection and blocked the view to turn safely. It had been approved by the town planner, but yeah, it was a smidge too close, so she had to move it. 'Someone' took weed killer and wrote 'DICK' on his front lawn with it. We all know who likely did it, but since there were no witnesses, nothing happened.
We have a true blue hoarder down the street. Our street collectively decided not to have yard sales because he would walk over and buy them out and half of his purchases would end up on his porch or scattered around the yard. He pulls by chain disable vehicles into the park parking area across the street from my house and eventually as the dust collects, someone will call the town, he'll move it for a while and then drag it back when he thinks he's safe to do it.

Aren’t garages designed to put cars in? Isn’t that the purpose? Yeah but around here they are often used for storage instead. I know very few people who park their cars in the garage.

I, for one, am thankful that there are neighbors in every area that are noting the regular patterns that they see. When something was off about my grandmother, her neighbors would call my mom to alter her and my Mom would check up on her. It saved her from a going on to 2 days of suffering s stroke once. And once she was in an accident & didn't want the family to know, but her neighbors called my aunt about it.
Especially in the times where we all shelter in place, you have nothing better to do sometimes but notice your immediate surroundings. And in the old neighborhoods when I was a kid, everyone took care of all each other and noticing things helped with that.

Nowhere near as strange as some of these, but my next-door neighbours do this weird thing with greetings cards. They display them in the front window, but with the images facing outwards. So if you’re walking past you can see that someone has had a birthday, but no one in the house can see their pretty cards.

I feel like nosy Mrs. Kravitz sometimes. My friend across the street had a strange car in her driveway every day. I texted to ask if her elderly mom is ok because there is another car that keeps coming. I forgot she told me they were getting a new car. 😂
Next door neighbor I have texted more than once to let them know their car window was left open. A few times I have knocked on their door and asked for the keys so I could close it myself. They are older and not in great health, and always appreciative. Yesterday he thanked me for being a friend, not just a good neighbor.
Same couple love to look out the window and watch my kids. They used to watch them goof off waiting for the school bus. Now they watch my kids do yard work and are proud of them growing up.
I totally get it because we have little ones across the street now and I love to watch them dance on the lawn and play together.

Who else has neighbors that do things that have you just scratching your head in bewilderment? We have three people on our street that befuddle us. 1) This is a very small thing, but our one neighbor doesn't mow his lawn often enough and then when he does he'll wait all weekend until about 7:30-8:30 on Sunday evening and then he heads out to mow. Why wait ALL weekend until the very end? Why not do it earlier and get it over? 2) There is a lady across the street and two houses down who mows her yard in the summer with her winter coat and hat etc on. Doesn't matter if it's May and still chilly or the middle of July and 95 degrees outside. She also NEVER parks her car in the garage. We've never seen her garage door open. She lives alone so not sure what all is in her garage so that she can't park in it. AND weirdest of all, she will sit in her car in on the hottest days with the windows up and the car not running for the longest time. Again, even in the middle of the summer. 3) Here is the one that we really don't get and I find it maybe worrisome. It's a younger couple on the other side of the last woman. The wife will take a home depot bucket and go out in their front yard for hours at a time. She crouches down with a spade and picks stuff out of the yard and puts it in the bucket. We're not sure what but she will spend forever in the same spot. While her husband either sits or lies near her doing nothing. Then they go inside and take the bucket with them through the front door. Not into the garage or around to the backyard, but directly into the house. Now we live in your average suburban subdivision. There is nothing but grass and maybe dandelions in our yards (and I've never seen dandelions in their yard). We've walked by on the sidewalk in front of their house and just grass. WHAT is she digging up? And why is he just watching her? And she's crouching on her legs, not on her knees or sitting on her butt. That must be exhausting. And why I wonder if there is some weird kind of abuse going on. But maybe I just read too much and am thinking too much? But dh agrees, it's kind of freaky. You need to go over and look where she’s digging and report back here!! Lol!!!! That is bizarre!

I think it’s weird that you think it’s weird to not park in the garage. NO ONE on my street parks in the garage. That would be a waste of space. Growing up, my parents and both sets of grandparents didn’t park in the garage. Maybe it’s regional, but that just isn’t the norm for me. Here it's weird to not park in your garage. But, I'm in Minnesota.

I have neighbours who've kept their young children up until 3-4 AM since the start of confinement in mid-March and it's annoying. I can hear the screams but especially the running around (old building so the sound travels through the floors and ceilings). It's not weird as much as it is annoying. It's a miracle when the noise dies down before 2 AM. New neighbours below do their laundry around midnight. I'm tired of hearing the washing machine spinning at past 1AM. But if the other neighbours' kids are having a screaming and jumping match at the same time, I can barely hear it. Oh well. Glass half full, I guess? My sister had neighbors like that. Dad worked 2nd shift, so they all kept that schedule.

We're probably the house everyone snickers about when they drive past... Our house exterior REALLY needed new paint and the yellow walls with Smurf blue trim needed to go. So we painted it gray with white trim ourselves because getting a contractor to actually give an estimate... Except the top part on the 2nd floor, is about 18 feet off the ground. Fine, we'll rent a crane. Nope, no one will rent us one because you can't use it on anything that isn't "level" such as...a yard around a house. We also discovered while painting, that the siding desperately needs to be replaced which is $$$. So we didn't finish painting and then it was winter and then COVID hit so we couldn't hire anyone to do estimates this Spring with contractors shut down... So for way too long we've had a mostly gray house with yellow triangles at the top... DH was talking about finally hiring someone recently so maybe... I'm sure the neighbors are scratching their heads about our ugly house for way too long. We had a guy out walking stop and ask if we intended our house to be that color! I said yes, but really it was no. It was supposed to be gray, but came out kind of army green. The builder repainted.

New people moved in and cut their yard but left a big circle in the middle uncut. We finally figured out that a bunny had babies in the middle and it wasn't the crop circle or cult ritual that we thought it was.

Way too much hail/snow here not to. We utilize the perimeter of the garage for stuff and it would drive me crazy not to be able to park in the garage. It must be regional because most (not all) people park in the garage here. I grew up where everyone parked in their garage.

I have to admit I'm curious about the young couple and what she is harvesting from the yard. This brings back memories of the horror movie Motel Hell.

I like to observe my one neighbor who mows shirtless when it gets hot. Our garage has always been a weight room. Since my husband died, I've cleared out most of it, but it's not ready for a car yet.

Two weird things: she insists on wearing all black, and she walks in the middle of the street (we have sidewalks). If she even hugged the curb it would be fine but many of us have almost hit her because she insists on the middle of the street, in black. Since walking the neighborhood during these Stay Home times I've discovered it is easier on my knees and hips if I walk in the street over the sidewalk. The sidewalk means I have to deal with the constant uneven, sloped segments for driveways and the edge of the streets around here are sloped to facilitate water runoff. Things I'd never really thought about before when just taking a leisurely walk with the dog. I don't walk after dark, don't wear all black and move off the street for cars.

Two weeks ago, we were walking the dogs and the neighbor three houses down was sitting on her front steps. She called out to us that her neighbor's tree was beautiful and she'd never noticed it before. She's been renting this house for probably 5 years and never once said anything to us. She's always in and out of the house quickly. We thought it was kind of weird first comment, but who knows. Then about 30 steps further into the walk we noticed the smell of pot and things started to make more sense. Cut to a few days later and we find an adorable dachshund in our yard. He's well taken care of, but no ID on his collar. I get him into our back yard and look online for a missing dog. I go back outside about 15 minutes later and see the tree lady outside frantic. Had we seen a loose dog? Come to find out, her boyfriend had died and it was his dog. There were cars everywhere on the street visiting this lady's house. So I am assuming the tree staring lady had probably just found out about her boyfriend. We didn't judge that she was so out of it at the time, but did chuckle a bit at her comment. Now it all makes much more sense.
Our back door neighbors left trash all over their yard. They just moved and I am so thankful. I have the husband who really keeps his lawn looking good and we got their trash in our back yard a lot.

I park in my garage...I wonder--those of you who use it for storage and not your cars, do you have a basement? Most homes in CA are built slab on grade, so no basements or attic space. Our garages are storage areas for everything from sports equipment, tools and gardening equipment to holiday decor. The alternative is to rent a storage locker.

We’re parking in front and not in any of our garage space (4car attached) because our garage doors aren’t working. Ugh.

I'm a neighbor watcher, too. Never hurts to know what's going on in your neighborhood! Our neighbors leave their oversized plastic nativity scene (think 1970s) up until Easter or beyond. My favorite neighbor has jokingly threatened to replace the baby Jesus with a giant pink plastic Easter egg in the manger.

Yes, I understand that's probably why she does it, but she doesn't hug the curb. I walk in the street too, but I'm almost in the gutter. She's just full out in the way of cars. In all black. With a "go around me" attitude.
