The lightbulb seems to be going off that maybe allowing troops to display the battle flag of a defeated army isn't a great idea within the ranks of a US military branch. Especially a defeated army that was fighting to keep black people enslaved. Removal Public Displays of the Confederate Battle FlagThe Lincoln Project also has a powerful ad about picking which flag you honor: Flag of Treason.

The Confederate flag argument always baffled me. When I was in HS some people were calling it the “rebel flag”. Whatever meaning it has to it’s owner I’m glad the Marine Corp has finally taken a side.

I'm old and rarely am shocked or see something new. The confederate flag has been displayed on military bases? My god, my god. I am absolutely speechless.

I’m not sure how much this was happening in an official USMC capacity, but the guidance put out is directed towards things like bumper stickers, hats, t shirts, posters, and outside barracks/ housing. There was some derision when the Commandant started talking about this earlier in the year; I’m glad to see there will be no pushing back on it now. I’m curious now to see what will happen with the bases named after Confederates.

It has not being displayed in any official capacity but some Marines will have it all over personal items. Mugs, t-shirts, flags, posters, decals, etc., in their rooms, base housing, work spaces and cars.
