Had no idea some Christians are threatened by yoga. Learn something new every day. True. Which is why I love the Peas.

I agree and wouldn't want my kid in a class about it, doing it etc.

My teammate had a parent complain to our principal because we sometimes do Cosmic Kids yoga for rainy day recess. The lady tells harmless stories about animals as she teaches the poses. She says Namaste at the beginning and end--but that is often times just a polite greeting. Here's a link to one of them so you can see how harmless they are: youtu.be/jSZvMHlw9vsMy principal encouraged us to keep doing the videos. OMG! She's bonkers! I love it! Right down to her onesie jammies!!!

I do yoga all the time and no one chants anything in my classes either. That wouldn't be OK with the studio at the gym. I don't know about private studios.
I thought yoga was dumb and then I started doing it. I have come to love it. Getting TO class is hard but once in the class I love it!

I personally am not bothered by yoga, or other religions. I often attend services at a local conservative synagogue because I know the rabbi, I enjoy watching her lead services, and I can practice my Hebrew. That doesn't make me Jewish. Although, probably that's not a good comparison because the Jewish people pray to the same God that Christians do.
But here's the thing that I've always wondered. If you -- general "you" -- truly believe that Christianity is the one true faith, Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior period, and nothing else will bring you to God.... well then why is chanting whatever it is they chant opening your mind to "other gods" or or whatever you believe about that other religion. If you -- general "you" again -- are sure that all other religions are false then there's nothing there to be threatening.
I've never done yoga but only because I'm sure I'd break something if I tried. I'm not very flexible. Although my dd, who takes yoga classes in college, says "Mom! If you took yoga you *would* be more flexible." lol. I might give it a try if I can find a class for people who are just starting. lol

I once again learn something from this group! I had no clue that as a Christian I should be against yoga.

I once again learn something from this group! I had no clue that as a Christian I should be against yoga. If that's your take-away from this, okay. But if your beliefs are that easily influenced, there are probably a lot of things you should be "against." (Not meaning to pick on you specifically, but the idea that *beliefs* can be adopted so easily.) I have taken various styles of Yoga in many different settings. I have yet to experience an instructor who tried to spiritualize the practice. I know there are Yoga practitioners out there who do, but in my personal experience it's very uncommon. If that aspect has been addressed at all, it's been more as a clear-your-mind-and-meditate approach. And many religions espouse meditation. I see Yoga much more commonly presented as simply an alternative method of exercise.

My yoga instructor does not do this. And I am a Christian and take a yoga class at least once a week and practice at home. I do not see yoga as a spiritual exercise. I relax and stretch. Period. I do not practice yoga, but agree 100% with Miss Ang . . . He sounds like a weirdo!

Yoga originated as part of the Hindu religion. I have taken yoga classes where the teacher instructs the students to open their third eye chakra and talks about other chakras. That's part of the Hindu religion from which yoga originates. When I was taking yoga, I'd tried to avoid the teachers who got all new-agey because it bugged me. This. I have a Christian friend who took Yoga exercise classes and only did so because there were no religious overtones involved. I've heard that the general physical techniques are beneficial to you but I've never tried it myself.

There are those (not me!) who believe that any 'other gods' are really demons (cue scary music) and one could accidentally fall into following a demon. I know, makes no sense to me either but people really do believe that.

I enjoy yoga and don't have a problem with it in my life nor do I find it to be in conflict with my faith.
Depending on the practice it may be inappropriate for a public school environment. If the more 'spiritual' elements are included rather than just stretching and movement then a problem can arise. I don't have a problem with public schools teaching children the facts about any other religion but when it steps over the line to participating in the practices of *any* religion it can cross a boundary.
What is rarely considered is this - what about the feelings of Hindus and Buddhists who see their religious practices watered down and co-opted by others?

To me they are not compatible. I am not putting yoga down, but I will not practice it. I am not judging anyone who does. FOR ME it would be detrimental and this is based on past experience and something that scared the crap out of me. I will just not go there. You can call me crazy or fanatical and belittle me or whatever. I am NOT putting anyone else down though. This is just my personal experience. I'm not "threatened" by it and I don't find it "offensive" either. It is just not something I will engage in. Yoga scared the crap out of you? Really? I swear some Christians need to make stuff up to be offended by and show how persecuted they think they are.

I'm not a very good Buddhist so maybe my thoughts don't really count but I think that, if meditation keeps people from being so high strung, I'm all for it.

And to be quite honest, the only thing that I can mostly meditate on whilst practicing yoga is not falling over. My balance is terrible and it can be quite embarrassing, but I've not knocked anyone over yet!

I don't do yoga. But only because as I get older I have less control over certain bodily functions and I am sure that in the midst of all the quiet meditations and physical contortions I will accidentally embarrass myself with noises that are best left to one's private moments.

I do Pilates and my instructor says this happens all the time. Everyone just laughs and moves on.
