I just finished another weekend of virtual events (and shopping) and was looking back at discounts from this one and one of them a month ago. One vendor advertising an incredible deal - 5% off! I know times are hard, but that does not cover even 1/2 of my state sales tax nor any of the shipping. What discount makes it worth it to you?

I’m lucky that I live in NH so no sales tax. Normally, I look for a minimum of 10% off, but try to shop NSD sales, Black Friday etc. Right now, there are hardly any sales or discounts.

5% means very little to me - it’s better than nothing but won’t push me to buy. 10% just covers my sales tax, so I’m actually paying the price I see. 15% or more feels like I got a bit of a deal, assuming shipping isn’t outrageous. 20-50% off feels like a deal but also makes me wonder whether everything is deliberately overpriced, unless it’s a product that is older/out of season/retiring. If a shop can regularly offer 40% or more off it tells me that they’re always overcharging me and I will only ever buy from them on sale (Macy’s, Columbia, etc).
As a small shop owner 10% is about the best I can do without feeling like I’m ripping myself off, unless I’m genuinely trying to unload something. I try to keep prices low and only offer small coupons infrequently so people don’t think I’m always overcharging them.

I'm happy with 10% (and sometimes I'm even willing to pay retail) if I can get free shipping or discounted shipping to go along with it. That probably isn't really feasible for a lot of companies, though.

For me, it depends where I'm buying from and the normal sales/coupons they offer. For example, at JoAnn or Michael's, I'll rarely buy something that's not 40% off or more. However, I know that independent (online) scrapbooking retailers tend to have much more conservative discounts (like 10% to 20% off), so if there's a bunch of items I want, it might be worth it. I think it's really important to observe a retailer's pattern of sales/coupons so you can know when you're getting the best deal. For example, I know that every year on Thanksgiving, Simon Says Stamp has 30% off their SSS brand, so if I see items throughout the year that I like but don't need for an immediate project, I'll wait for that particular sale.
(Side note: does anyone else miss how the original 2Peas used to have their sale/clearance section sorted by percent off? Scrapbook.com continually advertises certain categories as 20-50% off, but there's no way to JUST see the items that are 50% off. The best you can do is sort by low price to high price, but of course, that depends on the original price of the item. I wouldn't pay $10 for a sheet of patterned paper but I might pay that for a $40 die set! It's so frustrating!)

Sales taxes are national (usual rate is 20% which is also applicable to anything crafts-related) where I live and automatically added to the price when you buy something. There's no extra calculation like in the US. It's just part of the price shown so I don't have the mentality of "Oh, that won't even cover the value added tax!"
For scrappy purchases in my country, there are rarely discounts higher than 20% on particular selections of items. There are two official sales periods in the year when stores can discount what they want for as low as they want. Those are great times to get older scrappy collections for half off, sometimes up to 70% off. Off anything in the shop, I rarely see more than 5 or 10%. I tend to be happy with 10% off at SB.com, especially when I can cumulate it with an already discounted item.
We don't have those stackable coupons like you do in the US with JoAnn's, Michaels. I've never been able to go to a store with a 25% off coupon for anything. Let alone 30 or 40. It's just a pretty expensive hobby over here. We pay not only full price most of the time but also the added cost of import taxes + currency conversion fee.

If there is something that I've been looking at but haven't yet pulled the trigger on, 10-15% off will quite often see me making the purchase. 20-25% off and I will usually actively look for things to purchase. Our "big box" retailer, Spotlight, regularly offers deals for 40% off a single item or $40 off when you spend $100. There was a time where I'd be going in and making use of those deals multiple times while they were active. But now I am in a place where I am not super keen to spend my $$ with them so I only ever go when there is something I absolutely need (and half the time they don't have it in stock anyway).
But a big deciding factor is also the shipping costs and exchange rates if I'm purchasing from overseas. They can and most often will completely kill any desire I have to make a purchase.

It depends on the store.
Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Joanns.... I will wait for what I want to be on sale for 50% off, or use a 40%-50% off coupon. On rare occassion M's and J's will offer a 60%.
Ulta....I will wait for the $5.00off or 20% off one Prestige item.
For online scrapbook stores...I wait until they have free shipping on a lower amount order. Free shipping on $29 or more.
Sephora, I usually only order when they have the annual sales.
I try to be a bargain shopper, because it makes my money go further. As well as spending less on stuff, allows me to contribute more money to my savings account. I check the ads every week. There are many items, I won't buy unless it's on sale. Then I stock up.

Well, that depends. The size of the business matters. A small business, if my shipping is covered by the discount I’m happy. It won’t ‘push’ me to buy but I’m less likely to dump a cart. Dumping my cart when I see shipping has become a frequent habit for me. And while I know why shipping costs money and I agree with being fair, and I want to support small businesses, but sometimes it just puts me off. But it also matters how much I want the item.
Shipping that’s equal to or more than what I want bothers me. Shipping that’s a bit high for an item that I know they are going to put in a padded envelope & mail.
A huge business chain store - 40% is a good discount And again all the same shipping issues apply.

Minimum for me to care is 15%.
I used to love when SC would "discount" something from $3.99 to $3.79 or something like that.

40% or more, often in conjunction with free shipping thresholds. I almost never pay full price for anything and the only way full price will get me is if it's discounted based on the items individually being sold (like a kit or bundle type thing...for instance, the HA or Echo Park kits).

It depends. If it's a big box store (Michaels or Joanns) I want 40% off at least AND free shipping. If it's an online craft store (Hero Arts, Altenew, etc.) I want free shipping. I especially expect free shipping when I order $50 or more. This is one reason why I don't shop at The Ton, their shipping cost is way over the top.

I just want free shipping. I would order WAY more stuff from scrapbook.com if they gave shipping deals.

It depends on the store. If it’s a small business (paper issues, butterfly reflections, cocoa daisy) 10% will get me to buy.
If it’s a box store, needs to be much higher. 30% if I really need the item but 50% if I’m just bored
I really tru not to buy out of boredom anymore c

I don't really shop with a % in mind. I'm not super picky about what I buy. It doesn't have to be the latest products, just something I know I'll use. I prefer to shop warehouse and overstock sites.
Once in a great while, I will pay full price for something very unique or I absolutely love. That's when I look at shipping charges more than a percentage off.

This is a very good question. First off, free shipping for anything I am getting on line. Sometimes Scrap Your Trip does $4.99 shipping and I will do that if there are quite a few papers I want because $5 shipping is basically 5 sheets of paper I can't buy.
20% is really the minimum I will even consider. 50% makes me really look and possibly buy. Today Walgreens had wall art for 60% off and that made me buy one as a gift for someone. I wouldn't have at 50%.
Anywhere between 5% and 15% I won't even look twice at that. Sometimes on Poshmark I get a notice that something I like has been reduced by 11% or something. That is not going to move me toward purchase unless they drop the shipping to $4.99.

50-90%+ makes me consider buying things at retail, if the original cost wasn't inflated. The only non-heavily-discounted items I'll pick up new are staples - mostly PVA glue, tape, basic white cardstock.
Michaels coupons only bring the price of most things down to what they should be, so I don't consider them to be coupons at all.

It's an interesting question. For Aussie based online stores I want the discount to be enough to make the price comparable to what I'd pay to buy it from sb.com. With a pretty crappy conversion rate that means I'll pay more for something than I would have 12 months ago.
Especially when I'm buying from overseas I consider the shipping cost. Somewhere like FJ I want the discount to cancel out the shipping cost and hopefully still give me a little bit of a discount on top of that. I now only buy when she does deep discounts as the shipping is so expensive otherwise it's just not worth it. Sb.com have such reasonable international shipping all the time that I'll almost certainly order if they offer either a low additional % off the total order or a discount towards shipping.

I love free shipping. It’s such a seemingly small thing, but I’ll pay full price for most things if I get free shipping. I read that Amazon Prime is so successful because of the “free” 2-day shipping aspect (although you’re still paying for shipping with the price of Prime and often the price of the product). There’s a sad psychological element to it...one that Amazon has studied intensely.
Otherwise, 20% off is usually the minimum that sparks me to buy something.

I haven't read all the responses yet but big box stores, it must be at least 40 but more likely 50% off for me to jump.
Small businesses/independent I prefer free shipping over a discount at a certain amount (50). I ALWAYS end up spending more than the minimum at that point. If no free shipping then 15% or more will get me there.

Free shipping is my thing. I HATE paying shipping. I would rather stores just mark up their prices just a bit to cover shipping. I know it's all relative.. I did just buy a purse from Dillard's and there was 9.95 shipping but to get free shipping I had to spend another $50 some dollars. I just paid the shipping because the purse wasn't available in any of the stores here and they just marked it down again to which I am going to assume the lowest price it is going to be. I hated it cause a big business like that could have had free shipping (I spent $100) at that price point.

Free shipping is my thing. I HATE paying shipping. You're not alone. Free shipping is the #1 biggest motivator of online commerce, i.e. what turns views into sales. "Free" is an extremely powerful word in retail.

I put $48 in my basket and didn't pull the trigger because shipping was $28. I'd have to get at least half of that back in shipping before I'll pay that. Now it was for a purchase from England, but I can wait.
ETA: It is 25 sticker sheets of maybe 5 inches by 9 inches.

After I saw the price of shipping, I pulled out a roll of washi glitter, a t square and a craft knife and made three cuts. It made a very nice "this will do" until there is free shipping. Is shipping for something that flat and small really $28 from the UK? I have no idea.

I agree with everyone about shipping. I just put 10 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 images for a necklace project for a total of $12.95 and the shipping came to $8.95! Nope.

I don't mind paying full price from a small business. I also try really hard to remember if something is on sale, to ask myself if I would pay full price. If the answer is no, then I need to question how much I need/want the item. If it's just overpriced, but I still want it now that it's on sale, that's fine. If I'm only buying because it's on sale, then I try to rethink my purchase. Shipping always makes me question a purchase. I hate it when I want 3 things that are $40 and the shipping ends up being $15. I typically won't buy when that type of thing happens. I'm another one who would buy more if scrapbook.com would offer free shipping more often. It's probalby good they don't.

Here in New Zealand, I'm lucky if I'm able to get a few stamping or scrapbooking things locally and independent stores are not likely to have regular sales or big discounts so any discount helps. Spotlight which is one of the few big box stores left that sells scrapping stuff might have 40% off one item but the range is not always good. I did manage to get my Scan n Cut for a good price though, so it just depends. The biggest cost buying from overseas is usually shipping so if I can get a discount to cover that I'm pretty happy.

I don't purchase based on %off. Unless it's a big clearance sale on stuff I normally wouldn't buy (the SC mega sale) or something that is going out of business that I love (KP ending) if I want it I buy it. A really good online sale may get me to purchase something I want, but cannot justify the price in my head, but that's pretty rare. The only thing I consistently buy with a 40% off coupon is ATG refills. For the majority of my shopping, I do my best to shop at my LSS and pay retail prices to help keep them in business. If they don't carry it, they will order it. I still do it that way, and pay their markup, since they can't survive if everyone expects a discount for every purchase.
