Last night the kids were discussing the rules their respective universities have put out regarding opening up for the next school year. Both require masks to be worn at all times in public spaces, so essentially any time they are not in their dorm room.
Both kids leave by 1Aug so I need to start planning/prepping.
I am trying to decide how many masks to make sure they have to go back to school. I really don't want to be wasteful and just give them boxes of disposable ones, although I will make sure that they each have a few disposable ones sealed in a zip lock bag to keep in their backpack as an emergency spare.
Should they have 1 per day? More? Should they change more often? Laundry is done every week to 10 days, so I will make them each a mesh bag to put dirty ones in to toss into the wash with the rest of the clothes.
Anything else I should consider in deciding on a number?

I was just thinking the same thing....the state has just decided all school staff must be masked all day and elementary kids must be masked in common areas outside their classroom (this is all based on our current status, it could get better....or we could go back to online school only). I'm thinking ds and I should both be prepared for 2 masks/day, possibly 3 just in case. I think I'd send college kids with about a dozen and some detergent to wash in the sink if their supply doesn't last till laundry day.

The emergency spare is a great idea. I had the elastic on my mask break as I was getting ready to go into the post office. Luckily I had a backup in my glove compartment.
If laundry is done every 10 days, I would plan one mask per day with a few extras in case they do need more than one on a day. Maybe 15 washable masks?
However, I always hang my washable masks to dry...don't know how having 15 masks hanging in a dorm room is going to work.

I just bought some face shields that attach to a baseball hat. I'll review them when they get here. I needed something for my students with hearing issues that need to be able to see my mouth

For my kiddo who is in 4th grade and myself, I am planning 6. One for each school day plus an extra. If I have to do wash in the middle of the week, I will. Usually I do laundry on Sundays. I have 8 for me of various styles because I was testing them out. 4th grader has 6. Preschooler has 2 but We’re not sure what school will be like for him or if there even IS school. DH refuses to wear one so he has his scungy N95 from doing wood stuff that he wears. If he wants me to, I will make him some.

My 2 kids that will be in college this Fall (different schools) haven't received any info saying masks will be required. So I'm going to wait and see before making plans for how to handle masks for them.

I'm a teacher and I'm thinking I'll have 10. I already have 5 that I use now with a rotation that allows me to wash them. I'd rather have too many than not enough.
Edited to add - our school has a few for each staff member in our school color and logo. That will be nice.

Dh and I both have to wear masks at work. I started with a handful but was tired of making sure I kept up with the laundry. I am being overly picky on washing and will only wash them with bath towels. In my mind I can't have something on my face that was washed with underwear, socks or a kitchen towel that wiped down a counter. We need 10 total for the work week and I have 14. My 8 yo dd has 2 but the other night I order 3 more for her in case school will require or encourage them. My 17 yo dd usually just takes one of ours but I ordered her a 5 pack from Old Navy in case they are needed for school. I have no idea if their school is going to ask them to wear them but I decided I don't want to be struggling to find them because everyone else is needing to buy them for back to school.
I found little mini laundry baskets that we use for them. One is close to red in color and one is close to green. Dirty goes in the reddish color basket and clean ones are in the greenish color basket. When explaining this to my family I said Red-STOP these are dirty do not use. Green-GO ahead and take a clean mask. LOL They thought I was crazy but they have remembered. HA!

My kid will be in and out of his apartment several times a day. If they need to wear a clean mask every time they take one off that could be 5+ masks per day. I simply do not have confidence in his organizational, cleaning or laundry skills to keep all of that straight. I'm planning to send him with 6 or 7 cloth masks but I've already purchased 3 boxes of disposable masks. In this case, I'd rather he have a clean, safe option every single time he leaves his apartment more than I am worried about the environmental impact of the disposable masks.

Wow, I can't believe he is an adult now. Nope this can't be right. LOL

D20 is doing college at home online next year but DS27 is living on his own and masking for work (USNavy) and essential outings. I made him eight - he does laundry weekly so that's one/day plus one to wear while doing laundry (apartment complex laundry room). I probably would have made 10-12 for DD if she were living on/off campus - because she's not quite as on top of laundry as DS is.
DD13 will need masks for school if we send her back this fall (masks suggested not required but she already know WE require them). I'll probably buy or make her 7 (she has one already) that way she can have a spare or 2 in her backpack at all times just in case an elastic breaks or she sneezes into the mask or drops it taking on/off at lunch or...

I rarely leave my house and I have 6, plus an N95 from my Dad's shop that was from an open package, but never used. That one is in a ziploc bag, only to be used in extreme situations (none of which I've come across yet). Plus I'm getting a couple of more cloth ones from my Mom. I mostly have several due to the style of them and finding one that I like best.

Has anyone received the masks from Old Navy?? I ordered a bunch and hoping they will be comfortable. DD will be required to wear a mask (after all out of province students quarantine for 2 weeks!!!) I will likely send a box of disposable as well.... will probably send 10-15 cloth..... imagine she won’t be doing laundry regularly.

I find that style of mask sometimes wants to go into my eyes, but I have a smallish face. They washed ok, but could use an ironing after drying if you care about that kind of thing.

My son’s college said 7-10. I will send him with 10 and also buy a box of disposable ones to have some in his backpack, dorm room, and some for his sailing locker.
At home we hang them with command hooks by the door to outside so we will do the same there.

One thing to think about is how hot is it where they go to school? Will their masks get hot and sweaty and gross going between classes? Do they have to wear a mask in any kind of physical activity class? If so, I’d want more than one mask per day x days between laundry.
We went on a vacation and found we needed multiple masks per day. We needed to change once the masks got sweaty or if they got wet in rain or if they started to stink.

That is something I hadn't thought about. It is very hot at DS' school and they go get quite a bit of rain, so that gives me more food for thought. DD's school has an overabundance of rich sorority girls (DD is in a sorority but hers is nowhere near as snooty as the others). I made a joke that I need to make sure she has a mask to coordinate with every outfit and maybe we should get some monogrammed ones as well. That is a joke, but I guarantee that there will be some that will have those.

I had a week’s worth of Harry Potter masks made for Universal Studios and I like the Johnny Was masks for me.

We were planning on two or three a day for our college kids (but they are doing remote learning now instead so, one less thing to worry about). I personally would want them to replace the mask they are wearing with a clean one every time they take it off. So, it was like 2-4 a day, depending on classes. My DH wears 2 when he is working (changes at lunch). If/when I go back to work in the fall, I expect to only need one per day since I'm only part time.
The Old Navy masks are pretty nice for the price. Definitely better than what DH and I were sewing (we have never sewn before so the results are workable, but not pretty).

It feels like it was just a couple of years ago. I would think about him anytime my dd would have an incident in sports that involved her head. Two years ago she had a concussion and upfront I told her we aren't messing around with this so don't push me about going back to basketball too soon. All I could think about was your son and what he all went through long after his injury.

She said she DEFINITELY needs to match her mask to her clothes. Luckily she can sew her own, so that’s good.
