I volunteer one afternoon a week at the reception desk at the office of a local non profit for people who struggle financially.
There are usually around 6 caseworkers working in their own offices. Currently they are not allowing any clients in the building.
So I arrived yesterday, wiped down the phone, chair arms, computer keyboard, etc. Then the director informed me that one of the caseworkers was tested positive for covid a couple of days ago so they’re advising everyone to get tested.
I was quite ticked off that the volunteer coordinator didn’t contact me to let me know before my shift.
I received two online sign ups from her today, one looking for a handyman to do some repairs in the office, and another with openings for reception volunteers in the next few weeks.
Am I wrong to think that all volunteers (many of whom are retired) should be informed about the positive case prior to signing up and going to the building?

Go get your test, and I'd probably self-quarantine until I knew the results. And I'd let the director know she handled that really poorly.

I am surprised they are even open after the worker tested positive. Not sure where you are located, but I work for a non-profit and we have been home since March. Our phones are forwarded and our executive assistant takes all the calls and then forwards clients to the appropriate person. And since you are a volunteer, I would get tested, but not go back until it is safe to do so as others could be infected or carriers.

My daughter is a social worker and their location is also a drop in center for local youth. Most of her job has been working from home since mid-march, except for setting up the new emergency food pantry next door to her building and going out to hand out meals to those in need. NO volunteers have been allowed in their bldg. since the pandemic hit.
I'm sorry they did not notify you of the positive case. I hope your test comes back negative!

This is serious, I would call your local health department and ask them to visit the site and to help them clarify how to be safer for all involved. Hopefully someone misunderstood a direction and missed a step to keep all parties safe.

That is awful. You should have been notified before you came in.

Yes, but unless you were in close, sustained contact with this person, I wouldn’t worry. You’re not likely to catch it from casual contact.
But still, that’s what contact tracing is all about - letting people know they’ve been possibly exposed so they can get tested.
I’m sorry this happened. I’m sure it’s frustrating and scary.

They should have let everyone know. Definitely shoot off an email to her.
