(ALERT: this is a thread from July that I updated below with before/after photos!)
I am giving my vintage (old) coffee table a makeover. First step was sanding down and re-staining the top. Second was chalk paint on the bottom. Unfortunately I was giving the bottom a light sanding and touched the stained (but dry) top with fingers that were covered in chalk paint dust. The top hadn't been sealed yet so I first tried to wipe off the white fingerprints with a dry towel, then tried with a slightly damp towel, then tried lightly sanding (400 grit) the area, then added another coat of stain. Most of the dust is gone but in a certain light, from a certain angle, I can still see a few faint white smudges. And of course the "sheen" in that spot is different because of the extra sanding.
Is there anything I can do to fix this - short of completely sanding down the entire top and starting over? Would appreciate any suggestions.
/sigh

Gosh that is a hard one. You didn't need to do any sanding on the chalk painted part though. I think if you are still seeing the chalk paint after all you already did, you might have to completely re-do that part. I love that look you are going for though!

I love that look you are going for though! cindyupnorth - Thank you for trying to help! This thread fell off the first page so quickly that I thought no one had responded. I should have checked anyway. I hate it when someone asks a question and then never returns to their own thread and that's exactly what I did... I did read that sanding chalk paint isn't really necessary but there were a few areas I was trying to knock down a bit. The chalk paint was a thicker than expected and was showing a few more drips and brush strokes than I was happy with. Just wasn't sure if there was a specific way to clean the chalk paint dust from the unsealed/stained top. I did the best I could and just moved forward with the poly. I'm thinking/hoping no one but me will be able to see the very faint smudge when all is said and done. With two coats of poly (which is where I'm at now) I'm not even sure I can see it anymore! Honestly, the table looks so much better than it did that even if I can see imperfections I'll probably just learn to live with them. This was the table before. Not really sure how old it is but it originally belonged to my MIL/FIL, so maybe from the 70's? Well built but never was my style and the condition of the top had been rapidly deteriorating. Don't have an after shot yet - it's still in my messy garage being worked on.

cindyupnorth - was updating a couple of my other threads and decided to respond again to this one with a long overdue photo of the finished table for you! I appreciate your response earlier this summer. As it turned out, I can't see any of the chalk paint dust but there are some streaky imperfections in the poly. You can only really see them at certain angles in the sunlight. Also - I tried to find a new handle but the holes are not the right width apart for standard handles and I wasn't up to drilling new holes and patching old ones. I left the short braces on the bottom because I might eventually put a shelf down there. So anyway - here's the finished (for now) table!

I love it. I was going to say a fine sanding but saw that you'd already tried that. Personally I like imperfections. Great job!

You did a nice job! If you don’t care for the color of the hardware, you can spray paint it.

I love it! do you like it? that's all that counts. I don't think the hardware is too bad! I do like it! Imperfections and all. It really is a well made piece of furniture and I think the updates make it feel more stylish. You did a nice job! If you don’t care for the color of the hardware, you can spray paint it. I considered that - but wasn't sure what color and ultimately I don't mind the color as much as the style.

I love the grain in the table top and the chalk paint colour you picked looks really good with it. Great table rehab!

Wow-I love the carved detail when it’s painted. So pretty. Sooooo much better painted. And I think the paint makes the legs look "chunkier" which is a look I happen to like!
