Well, when all the elected leaders in the party that your state tends to vote for have been telling you that masks are for wussies and the virus is no huge deal ... what do you expect? It’s a hoax to prevent Trumps re-election. How stupid do people have to be to think 1/2 the world would do this just to prevent Trumps re-election. The narcissist ( Trump ) suggests it and his idiots repeat it without a second thought. Like no one in those other countries cares THAT much about America’s politics. If they ( General world they ) didn't think we were a nation of narcissistic idiots before Im sure they ( the world ) do now. Our Covid failure is on other nation’s evening news and while it’s not voiced the thought that we are inept because we can’t handle it is there even if unsaid. I’m waiting for one of them to come right out and say ‘those pathetic Americans’ all dying of Covid

I was infected on purpose at a chicken pox party when I was about 5.
As far as I know, chicken pox hadn’t killed 120,000 people so far that year. So. Maybe not what we’d do today, but less irrational than the COVID party by a long shot.

I guess the upside is that they had motivation to get tested? Hopefully they have enough sense to stay home once they are positive but it’s not likely.

Well.. in their defense, there was no vaccine for chicken pox back then. And there was some semblance of herd immunity because most people got chicken pox when they were kids. So we can't blame them for shingles today, if the shingles patients had chicken pox before the vaccine. I had all of those childhood diseases and I remember my mother telling me that I needed to get German measles before I was ready to have a child because of how it could hurt the unborn baby. Fortunately there was a vaccine long before I had kids. They also believed chicken pox caused sterility in males if you got it after puberty so it was common for mothers to try to expose their young boys for my peers ( I got CP the old fashioned way, at school ) My GP won’t let me get the shingles vaccine yet, I gave no idea what her issue is with it I’m over 50. I didn’t argue with her but I’m looking into it myself so I can discuss it again in Dec. My doctor asked me to wait a couple of months to get the shingles vaccine. She said it can cause you to run a fever, and that wouldn't be a good idea right now.

I had someone on my FB feed suggest it. "We're all going to get it anyway." I think people either forget, or don't think about the fact that we have NO idea how this virus will impact us in the future. Look at Chicken Pox, a virus. Back in the day getting it was pretty much a rite of passage. But it lies dormant in the body, and then comes back as shingles. Much more debilitating than CP. AIDS is a virus too. At the beginning it was a death sentence. Now, people can live with HIV, but it took many years to get to that point. Still no cure, and the medications needed to keep AIDS at bay are the real deal. Anyone who wants to get COVID19 on purpose at this point in time is a FULL-FLEDGED IDIOT. There is no cure. There is no vaccine. It is not know what the long term effects of having this virus will affect our bodies. Yes I mentioned on another thread that my friend who has recovered from Covid (hospitalized, resuscitated, close to going on respirator) has lasting damage to lungs, kidneys and liver.

I agree with the outrage.. but folks, we are talking about sending kids back to school in a few weeks. It’s the same damn thing. So look - either it’s wrong to gather people together or not. This is a sore subject for me bc I’m struggling with this decision within my family.

This is a sore subject for me bc I’m struggling with this decision within my family. This is different though. The kids are actively trying to get it, offering money for a prize, inviting covid positive kids etc. It’s more than just gathering. And in hindsight, chicken pox parties were not a good idea. But, in the 1970’s there was no vaccine, a lot less was known about it, it seemed inevitable that kids would get it and it was thought that it was better to get it as a kid vs adult. And, I think kids rarely died from it. Now that we know better, it’s obviously a bad idea but back then, the thinking was different.

I'm not sure how this is the same as possibly sending kids back to school. Seems like some faulty logic. For one thing, I think most people (except maybe those who think that think this is all a hoax or no big deal) are still planning to have their kids take precautions and try not to get infected. School also has a purpose while kids getting together to party does not. Just because one activity is allowed does not mean that all activity should be a go. For example...I have to go to work and I need to get groceries. They both have risk but they also have a purpose. Since I go to those places it doesn't mean that I should just say screw it and go on with my life as if there is no pandemic at all.

It's about restarting the economy on the backs of kids and their teachers. Trust.

You don't need a DR's orders to get it, nor do I believe that you need a Dr's order for your insurance to cover it (if they cover vaccinations). I got my two doses over last fall and early winter at my local pharmacy. They billed my insurance. I never dealt with it, easy-peasy. I know. I’m just looking into it first because she didn’t say why she said not yet. So far I haven’t seen anything to throw me off it. I had shingles the first time at 16 - it was on my side and not too big a deal. I got my second case when I was 52 - on MY FACE. The shingles followed the nerve that went from the center of the divet at the top of my lips up across my cheek into my scalp and ending at the midsection of the top of my scalp. It was incredibly painful and I have lasting neuropathy from it. I will probably live with that pain for the rest of my life. Shingles is NOT something to take lightly. As soon as my oncologist gave me the go ahead to get the shingles vaccines, I did. I had a strong reaction to the adjuvant they add to the vaccine (it is what makes it 95+% effective), and ran a 102 degree fever for 2 days and then was fine. Unless you have to go into work or some other reason you need to leave your house, if you do have a reactive fever, it will only be for 2 days, so I would go ahead. However, if you need to go someplace outside of the house, then maybe hold off. You wouldn’t feel like going anywhere for 2 days if you were one of the people who has a strong reaction. My mom had her vaccines at the same time I had mine and no reaction whatsoever. So, not everyone spikes a fever.

I just read this on CNN. You buy a ticket to get into the party and whomever catches the virus first gets the money from the tickets. W the actual F? And the thing is, they're probably not the ones that will get sick and die, they'll infect someone else that will end up dying. FFS!! What a bunch of brainless, reckless idiots! And I agree, THEY aren't likely the ones to die as a result!

One of my friends back in Canada is a highly thought of family physician. She has decided to wait until age 65 to get the shingles vaccine. I was going to ask her why but then her son died and I haven't had an opportunity to ask her about it. I will one day. If I'm remembering correctly, she had said something about waiting so that she'd be protected into older age....

When I asked my doctor about it a couple of years ago she did not recommend it because she said that a better vaccine was on the horizon. When the Shingrix vaccine became available she recommended that I get it. I am 63.

For what it's worth, the university is saying that it's high school students in the area, not UA students. UA Covid Parties . I'm not sure what difference that makes, since many of these are likely recent graduates who will soon be UA students. Just the university trying to save face, I guess. I am so mad about this.....1) my BIL is a surgeon at the hospital in Tuscaloosa, and dumbass behavior like this puts him and my sister at higher risk and 2) I'm a teacher and we can't even get support from admin and parents to have kids keep their damn phones put away, but we're trusting that they won't come to school sick or will be vigilant about social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing, etc. while at school? ? I have zero confidence in my district's ability to keep me safe at work. But what recourse do I have? Quit? Our union is bargaining now. Thank God I left AL and now live in a state where teachers are represented by an actual union.

Actually you have to have the second shot between 2-6 months after the first. DH was due his second one by tomorrow and the Kaiser immunization dept was closed so his doctor had him come in and his nurse gave him the shot. Like me he felt pretty rotten for a few days. BUT totally worth it! ETA: maybe that's what you meant. I thought you meant shot #2 6 months later. No hyphen confused me.
