DFW here. A while after the Breaking News about the face covering mandate, I was sitting in my car at a local QT. There was a big sign on the door about face coverings are Required - watched at least 15 people go in, buy stuff without wearing a mask. And, the cases are skyrocketing here. Oh - there is a confederate flag flying in my neighborhood still today. Along with 4 or 5 Trump 2020 flags.

There is a list of exceptions to wearing a mask, most of them are understandable, to me at least. Children under 10, medical disabilities, while eating or drinking, in the water, etc. One I don’t understand? You don’t have to wear one when voting. Why should that be an exception? If the concern is that some people don’t have masks, can’t they provide them or allow t-shirts tied over faces? Who doesn’t have a spare t-shirt? What am I missing? Link to Executive Order for Masks.

If that's the reason, it seems that it infringes on the rights of those who want to not get exposed. One of those can't win scenarios.

I just got back from the store and about half of the customers were not wearing masks. 🙄

I’ve already seen one person claim that her family will leave the state. Okay then. And go where? Somewhere that doesn't require masks for now sure but the way things are going it's going to be required everywhere soon. By the time you pack up and move in a pandemic, find jobs...

Because voter suppression is only supposed to impact blue voters, never the red.

Between refusing mail in voting and this, I will now have to put my life at risk in order to use my right to vote. Everyone will. Whereas all they need to do to make it safe for everyone is require masks. That doesn’t infringe on their right to vote, it infringes on their right to be a selfish asshole.

It is ridiculous to not permit mask wearing while voting. What exactly are the restrictions? Could you wear one up until the time you receive your ballot and cast your vote, and just pull it down then? It’s far from ideal I know but better than no protection at all. Will the line ups be kept distanced between people?

It’s Texas so you know, heat index of 1000 degrees making them super comfortable. But not required inside an enclosed space where people may be next to each other for hours? In many places it just won’t be possible to keep your distance, and from what I’ve gathered the same people that refuse to wear masks are the same people who also don’t keep their distance. It will be especially difficult if they have problems with having enough volunteers to keep typical polling locations open. I’m lucky in that I’m in a small town and our lines have been nothing like they were in San Antonio. I’m hoping, but not holding my breath, that they at least extend early voting.

Can’t you request a mail in ballot though? Here in California you can request a mail in ballot which you can mail or drop off at a polling place. Seriously considering the option this year.

No, that’s the problem. The Democratic Party tried to get Texas to expand absentee voting (currently it’s pretty restricted to those over 65 and a few exceptions) but it’s still going through the courts. SCOTUS just denied a request to expedite the trial meaning its likely those under 65 will have to vote in person. You know, the age group most likely to vote D. Link. Yes, I know it’s Vox, was first one that came up on Apple News.

they were supposed to have metrics to follow for reopening. idk if anyone has followed them. shit show. I started a whole thread about that a while back, I guess around Memorial Day. And the answer is that no, most of the states like ours that pushed to aggressively reopen had not met the gateway metrics.

That's why we're still on stage 3 (our stages are numbered opposite of what states are using, sigh). No-earlier-than date for considering moving to Stage 2 was July 13 until last week. Now it's August 3. I expect it to move yet again. Stage 3 is mandatory teleworking, 2 is strongly encouraged.

Or helmets on motorcycles. Adults in Texas are not require to wear motorcycle helmets. That's why they call the riders donorcycles. ETA: Just because it's not a law, doesn't mean there's no value in keeping people safe... just like wearing masks.

apropos nutso Texas GOP
""I want you to give a message to the governor," Hotze told Abbott's chief of staff, Luis Saenz, in a voicemail. "I want to make sure that he has National Guard down here and they have the order to shoot to kill if any of these son-of-a-bitch people start rioting like they have in Dallas, start tearing down businesses — shoot to kill the son of a bitches. That’s the only way you restore order. Kill ‘em. Thank you."
The voicemail, which The Texas Tribune obtained Friday via a public information request, came on the weekend of June 6, several days after Abbott activated the Texas National Guard as some of the protests became violent. It is unclear whether Saenz responded, and Abbott's office declined to comment on the voicemail.
A Hotze spokesperson said he was not immediately available for comment."

Welp, not surprisingly, now a lawsuit has been filed to challenge the mask mandate.
From NBCDFW:
A lawsuit has been filed to stop Gov. Greg Abbott's face mask order.
A group of conservatives filed a lawsuit, claiming Abbott's order is unconstitutional.
The lawsuit said the order is "contrary to the Texas spirit and invades the liberties the people of Texas protected in the constitution."

I feel compelled to point out that Hotze, the far right Houston whack job, is not the same person as Dr. Hotez, the Houston-based epidemiologist who has been warning of exactly the current situation in Texas for months.

Weird. I thought Texas was exempt from the pandemic. I know it's not funny, but I really did LOL. ETA I really hope Texas does not experience the levels of infections and deaths that we saw in NYC. It's incredibly frustrating to see months of SIP undone by opening too fast and/or ignoring the advice of the medical community. I heard a report that Arizona is approaching 90% hospital occupancy. These stupid people should have listened to what we went through (in NYC) when there were no beds and no end in sight. I wish I felt more empathy but when I think of how all of these places had the chance to learn from the mistakes we made initially my heart is made of stone.

The same selfish assholes will want “everything” done when granny or junior gets sick. They will expect healthcare workers to risk their lives caring for them with inadequate PPE. I think the punishment for not wearing a mask should be for the offender to wear a plastic isolation gown, a mask, and a face shield while sitting in the nice hot Texas sun for at least 12 hours.
