Most of Australia has done very well with limiting corona virus infections - in my state of 4 million people we have only had 20 deaths. We went into lockdown and did massive amounts of testing, around 850,000 tests. Our numbers dropped right down to 0 new cases at one point and consistently hovered under 10. When they discovered that people returning from overseas were not isolating for 14 days, the Government took matters in hand, for the last couple of months, Aussies returning home from overseas are met at the airport by buses, they are driven under guard to hotels and they are put under lock and key for at least 14 days they cannot leave, cannot have visitors only get the food that is supplied to them etc, they are essentially prisoners for that time. In the last two weeks our numbers have been climbing - 20 new cases in a day, then 35, 45, then 77...wtf? There were 2 big family clusters, one was in relation to a large religious gathering, and the Government was being blamed for not getting the right message across to ethnic groups etc. Now they have been able to do genomic testing on the virus and the news has just started leaking out about how these new clusters of infected people have occurred... take a guess before you read on.... take a wild guess.... The people in forced isolation in hotels have been having sex with the security guards working there to keep them locked in and the community protected!! The guards have been letting them visit each others rooms too, to "play cards" etc. Some of the guards have taken people out shopping or to the nearest 7-11. Then those guards are then going home and spreading it to their families. Now we have a whole section of the community back in lockdown, 10 suburbs so far and we are at risk of the whole state being locked down again. Because some people can't keep it in their pants for 2 weeks. The news has just started leaking publicly and I think there's going to be an enquiry - I hope they all get fined. LINK Oh and panic buying has started up again, it seems Aussies still don't have quite enough rolls of toilet paper already & are rushing to buy more and grocery stores have imposed buying limits again. Seriously.

Hard to believe that anyone could be so desperate that they are dropping their pants for any random guard that walks past. It's 2 weeks, surely those hotels have a porn channel and you can go solo for 2 weeks!!
Now some of the guards are saying they didn't get enough PPE training. What training is needed? The returned traveller should be on one side of the locked door and you are on the other, that's the only PPE you need.

I'm sorry. I guess the US does not have a lock on stupidity after all. All of your country's sacrifice threatened by a few selfish people.

For crying out loud!
Just shows that the weakness in any plan is the people who are responsible for carrying it out.

It’s mind boggling and so disappointing. Australia has done really well overall and now this. There is a lot of outrage where I am because we had 5 early cases (all came home into isolation) and then nothing for 12 weeks but because it’s still Victoria, we are facing the same restrictions. I love just over the river in NSW but work in Vic so I have 2 lots of restrictions to get in my head.

Unbelievable! Not sure what some people are thinking! Hope they get this under control quickly.
My daughter just arrived back in Canada from Melbourne yesterday. She is isolated at home - alone! 1 day down, 13 to go!

I have been thinking of the Peas in Victoria with this all developing and hoping none of you are in any of the hotspots.
I'm in Western Australia and our Premier has been criticised by the eastern states for keeping our border locked down. Pretty much every West Aussie supports his decision and this has just reinforced that.
I really hope you can get on top of it but people's attitudes seem quite different than during the first wave. They seem more complacent now and less willing to follow lockdown rules. Hopefully that's just a press beat up and not accurate though. I really feel for you.

Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch from Holy Grail where the guards can work out how they are supposed to guard the prince in the tower once the king leaves.....dumb and dumber

I was listening to an ABC Australia news podcast last night in bed. I thought that was what it said, but decided I must be too tired to hear it properly, because it couldn't possibly be true. I have felt for some time that Australia risked a second outbreak due to becoming complacent about their early success in containing covid, but this is beyond that.

Unbelievable. They risk an entire country's population to have sex and play cards.
Again, we are doomed.

I’m like because it doesn’t show up in tests for about a week. And the plane flight is your biggest risk. So by that point you Might as well wait it out.

HAHAHAHA!
That would absolutely happen here.
Also there would be ginormous protests about having our rights taken away with the forced quarantine/jail. And probably some guns. Cuz America.

Hey are there anti maskers over there? I"m wondering if it is just an America-Trump phenomenon... At this stage mask wearing is completely voluntary, there have been no requirements for anyone in the general public to wear masks However they are currently talking about making it mandatory on public transport...but so far we haven't had to deal with that particular phenomenon yet
