I went to a grocery store yesterday. It was one I have been to before, but don't go to regularly because it is far away. I was last there about 2 months ago. Yesterday I did my shopping and headed up to the front to pay where I realized that ALL the checkout lanes had been converted to self checkouts. I don't object to self checkout at all. In many stores I prefer it, especially now. But I have always hated the self checkouts at this store because they are hyper sensitive and lock up if you do something unexpected like try to use a paper bag. At least the new ones seem slightly less touchy. It did get mad at me once though. I was running out of room in the bagging area and tried to move one of my bags to the cart. So naughty!
This is the first time I have ever seen a store with no cashiers (except at customer service). I don't know if they did it in response to covid, or if they just can't hire enough help (each lane used to have a cashier and a bagger) or maybe most people wanted to use self checkout. I wonder what happens when someone comes in, shops, realizes it is only self checkout and gets upset?
Has anyone else's stores gone all self checkout? Maybe this is the arrival of the future of grocery shopping!

Ours haven't. I feel badly for the cashiers and baggers who have lost their jobs. Usually, on principal, I go thru the line with the cashier. Last time I did, though, she repeatedly had to fix her mask from slipping below her nose. I'll probably be using self check out for awhile.

No ours haven’t gone completely self checkout. At my local Meijer’s there are 12 self checkouts for people with 12 and under items. Then there are 4-6 self checkouts for any sized cart. Then there are 10-15ish actual checkout lanes. Most are usually open. I hope they don’t go to all self checkout. Sometimes checking out is a major pain in the ass. The lanes for 12 and under items have scales in the bagging area. The machine looks for the weight of the item after you drop it in. Things like Lego minifigure don’t register, and the machine gets really pissy and then will stop working. Sometimes finding an attendant is hard, so then you have to wait. Meanwhile the line behind you is growing and people are getting impatient and grumbly. 😂🙄

Ours tried a while back, but it was so problem-riddled that store staff were constantly having to come fix things. So now it’s back to cashiers.

No, but I wish there would be more self check out lanes at stores. Usually there are about four, and they are always busy. I prefer self check out. Though I do feel bad about so many losing cashier jobs.

Our stores all have plexiglass walls for cashiers so we are all protected. My pet peeve with self checkout is when you scan an item and it says please wait for attendant. Why? I don't have a problem and the item scanned I can see it there on the screen. And she's busy and doesn't look at you and oh my gosh it does it again 2 items later as she walks away!
Yes I'd feel bad for the permanent jobs lost too. We have an some new jobs I see like door counters.

I haven’t seen one in my area. There is one store that I only go to occasionally. I hate to use their self-checkout because it is so picky. I always have to wait for an attendant.

Our Walmart has a lot of self checkout lines and I love it! When they first started a few self checkout lane years ago there were always problems, so many people avoided them. But our Walmart would have about 35 lanes and only 5 open. I hated to shop at Walmart. But with the new self checkout lanes (we have about 25?), they work so well, and I never have to wait in line anymore. I love it! They have had them for about 2 yrs. and still have about 5 lanes with cashiers.
Our grocery store has 4 self checkout lanes, for small orders.

Our stores all have plexiglass walls for cashiers so we are all protected. When I went to this store 2 months ago the regular checkouts were still there. They had the plexiglass up and I noticed that compared to other stores I had been in, their walls were very poorly designed. They were in two separate pieces with a big gap right where the credit card machine was. And there was no bagger at my lane so I bagged my own and the cashier was right there with no shield. It didn't seem very safe.

Mine added a bank, but it's possible it was part of a plan pre-pandemic.
A tip I learned: there should be some colored lights around the scale/scanner, red and green. After you scan something, they will blink a bit, trying to detect it in the bagging area.
Don't remove anything while they are blinking or flashing. Wait until they are solid, then you can remove something from the bagging area.

I hate self scanners because I always have a problem with them.
My dh says that I'm jinxed but I always have to track down the attendant for assistance. It takes longer than if an employee would have checked me out.

I love self-checkout and use it whenever I can. But none of our stores have gone to all self-checkout. We have two types of them and one is very touchy like some of you have described. It's the kind they have at Target where you put your items straight in a bag and there's some sort of sensor under the bag that registers whether or not you've put something there. Those are SO touchy, always flashing the light for someone to come and help.
The other kind we have are like regular registers with a long conveyor belt. The groceries all go down to the end and then you bag them when you're done. Or often an employee will come along and start bagging, especially if there's a lot of stuff. These are the only ones I'll use and there's rarely a problem.

My store added 4, maybe 6 in the last year, but there's still at least a dozen normal checkout lanes. I shop once a week and my cart is full, so no I don't want to scan & bag my own groceries. I have no problem helping to bag my groceries (because then I group things as I want them to be...and I know not to place the gallons of milk on top of the bag with the eggs or bread...). However, I have yet to see a set up that would work for the amount of groceries I have each week. I don't mind the self check outs if I only have a couple of items.

I heard rumors that some stores were going to all self checkout (I think Walmart) but haven’t experienced it yet. I know the Home Depot we went to the other day only had self checkouts open, I didn’t look hard enough to even see if they had regular checkout lanes at all. Personally I prefer self checkout at most stores and shop n scan at Meijer (their self checkouts are limited to 20 items and they’re unbelievably sensitive). I don’t want people to be out a job but I swear most (not all) cashiers need to return to Bagging 101 because more often than not they do something stupid like putting raw meat with fresh produce and it makes me crabby.

Wegman's now has an app where you scan all your groceries as you add them to your cart/bags. Then you go to a special checkout, open the app ect and pay...So easy!! I am sure there are some assholes who won't scan something and steal it.

I don’t mind using self checkout but there needs to be a cashier around to fix issues.

I love self checkout. Even better now that most stores have several, and ONE line that feeds to all of them.

I haven't seen a store go to all self-checkout yet. Both of the Costco stores I shop at took out all their self-checkouts last year. I went in one last month and they had added them back, but more of them and spaced further apart. Was in the other Costco a couple of weeks ago and they still haven't added self-checkouts back, so I will be shopping at the one with them now. I much prefer self-checkout when I can use it, especially now.

Our drug store has added 2 self check out registers. The clerk who is working is also hard to find, so the self check out goes much faster.

I would guess that most of the former cashiers and baggers have been shifted to the online order/pickup side of the business. There may not have been any jobs lost.

Wal Mart is piloting all-self-checkouts in some cities. I think it was in the works before Covid. Some McDonalds here went to all touch screen orders as a test a while back. I wonder if it is a response to increased minimum wage.

I too have heard Walmart is planning to go all self-checkout. Several of our Super Walmarts have been converted to about 2/3rd self-checkout stations. Usually they only have 2-3 regular lanes open, so it is kind of forcing you to do the self-checkout or stand in line another 45 minutes. I feel for the elderly or disabled though as sometimes getting heavier items in and out of the cart isn't the easiest thing to do. My gripe about them is the space. You have a cart load, and no place to put the scanned items as the bagging area only allows space for a couple of bags. Also, the area is not wide enough to have the cart beside you, and you must have it behind you and that is just a pain in the butt having to turn around each time and then since the cart is lengthwise, it is difficult to reach items in the cart.

I don’t really care for self checkout unless I only have a handful of items. My closest store (Albertsons) has no self checkouts. My favorite store still has lanes where the cashiers take the items out of your cart. I’m dealing with some back pain issues and grocery shopping really aggravates my pain.
However, I did just read this morning that Amazon is opening an Amazon Go store in my town.

I too, don't love self checkout at the grocery store. I always have issues with the vegetables and trying to get them to scan right. They never have the right info on the veg. I always need the attendant to fix something. I'd rather check out with a cashier. My stores all have plexiglass walls and the cashiers either have on masks or face shields so I feel comfortable.

For some reason, I lock them up ... every damn time! I always need a real person for some fix -- no code on veggies, alcohol purchase, double ring, wrong price -- or I just screw it up! I don't mind self check out -- its just that I break it!

I prefer self checkout, so I can put the groceries in the bags how I want.
Frozen items together. Fridge items together. Milk in it's own bag. Liquid soaps(dish soap, laundry soap) in it's own bag. No more than three heavy items(can goods) per bag.
I got tired of using the regular checkstand, and repeatedly having to ask for common sense things to happen or not happen.... Please do not put 8+ canned goods in the same bag. Please do not put milk(that tend to have condensation/wetness on the outside of the bottle) in with boxed items. Please do not put the "hot and ready" roast chicken and potato wedges in with frozen items.
And... Self check is one line, next in line goes to next empty self check spot. Regular checkstands have multiple lines, so it's luck of the draw who you get behind in line. I, of course, always seem to end up behind the person who is not prepared and ready >> meaning can't find their debit or credit card in the 18 pockets and nooks & crannies, different wallets/smaller bags, within the confines of their purse....which they search while having a conversation on their phone, while they make a side-comment to the cashier "that they just used it day before yesterday"....while wrangling their toddler who is trying to climb out of the cart, while their tween is whining and begging incessantly for a pack of gum.
I love self check!

I prefer self check out if I'm by myself. I think there should always be both options at stores.

My closest grocery store is a Kroger. In the evenings it is exclusively self checkout. They do have a cashier standing by in case there are any problems.
They only have a register with a cashier during the daytime hours and on weekends during the day.
I don't like to have to ring up the groceries from a big shopping trip. If I have a lot I usually ask for a cashier to help me.
Now that we're in a pandemic, I prefer to do self checkout.
