Our Walmart has only 3 cashier checkouts. All the rest are self check.

I recall reading an article that suggested self checkouts were designed to start “training” shoppers for the days when items will be scanned as they go into the cart and leave the store without a formal “checking out” process.
I run hot and cold on self check out; I like scanning and bagging my items in particular order, I prefer no cashier contact, but the bagging area hiccups get really aggravating sometimes!

From my observations, the self checkout process tends to be so slow. There are always people who take 30 minutes to scan ten items. They examine the item, stare at it for a while then try to scan, over and over, ringing the same thing up multiple times. They finally realize what they have done and have to wait for an attendant and the whole process begins again.
Also, the self checkouts here don't not seem to have speed lanes for small orders. So you have no choice but to wait in line with your milk, eggs and melting ice cream behind someone with 5000 items. Obviously, not a fan.

No, and I doubt that they will. People wait in line for a cashier when self checkouts are open. I use self checkout if I have a few things, but no way do I want to checkout a lot of groceries and then bag them.

My closest store (Albertsons) recently added self checkout, but still has plenty of regular cashiers. The cashiers and baggers are always the same people who have worked in that store for a long time, and they are really friendly and helpful and do a great job. I do not use the self checkout because I am concerned for the job security of these great employees.

My Wal-mart is about 2/3 self-checkouts now. I prefer it right now because it seems lower risk than having a cashier touch my items that has touched a lot of other people's items (that they themselves touched).
I'm looking forward to when stores are like the Amazon store and you don't have to go through a check-out lane, you just get automatically charged as you leave the store.

I also prefer the self checkouts. Nine times out of ten I can scan and bag my stuff faster than the cashiers can, and the lines are usually shorter to get to the registers. Added bonus is that the stuff is bagged with common sense when I do it myself.
DH has said that Home Depot has had only self checkouts for some time now, and that to me would be the kind of store that might need an actual cashier for some of the weirder, little items that price tags can easily fall off of.
