Some stores in my area are allowing us to bring our own bags into the store once again. One store will not bag your groceries though, however a different store will touch your reusable bags. And they are charging once again if you use their plastic bags.
How about your area?

The store I was at yesterday still doesn't allow them. I was bagging up my groceries and the woman at the next lane got scolded for bringing hers in. But she was already bagging with them so they let her finish. I guess I don't see the problem if you are the one bagging and no one else has to touch them.

The 10 cent bag charge is back but the Trader Joe’s I have been shopping at still wont allow bags inside. You can ask for your groceries to be put back in your cart and you can bag them at your car. That is why I have been doing.

Our state went forward with banning plastic bags as of July 1st. So we have to bring our own or purchase paper bags for .10 each. I had taken all my bags out of my car shortly after the pandemic started and forgot to put them back in. I stopped at the store on my way home today and had to buy brown bags. 🤦♀️

I have been bagging my groceries from my cart in the trunk of my car. My store still has signs up saying they don't allow reusable bags, but I have seen people using them. I don't mind bagging my stuff outside.

I haven't seen a sign at Publix (but also didn't look for one - I just decided to switch to single use bags for the time being there...I don't buy much usually). Aldi's has a sign up still - I've been bringing the cart to the car and bagging there except today we were in the midst of a thunderstorm so I went ahead and paid for brown bags and bagged inside.

NYC rescinded its (fairly new!) plastic bag ban because of COVID-19. I have kept bringing my own bags to shop, but I bag everything myself - I don't even set the bags down on the counter, much less ask the cashier to touch them.

I've only used them at Aldi. There are several charities here that take plastic bag donations, so I do that when I can. One of them even takes torn bags. (they crochet with them)
I've been shopping at Costco more, so that cuts down on bags too.

When they stopped allowing me to bring my bags I bought a large laundry basket for each car. Now I just put my groceries from the cart directly into the laundry basket. I also have my bags in my trunk and if I have a lot of groceries I will put the cold stuff like cheese, butter, ice cream etc in a bag. That laundry basket is so easy to pick up and bring into the house that I won't go back to bagging everything.

The bulk of our shopping is at Costco now. They don’t allow bags in the store. We use their boxes they have that held products. At the grocery store we buy what we can carry or pay the 10 cents for their nice compostable bag that we can use for compost in the green bin.

For those of you who bag in the trunk, do you buy a lot? Do you just ask the cashier not to bag?

Nothing has changed in this regard here. I still bring my own bags and I still bag my own groceries, which is normal here. They still have paper, plastic and fabric bags available for sale at the checkout if you don't bring a bag - most people are bringing their own as far as I have seen.

I just got an email yesterday that they will be allowing reusable bags - still no charge for plastic, have to bag our own, and can’t place items in the bags before checkout. They still encourage contactless payments and e-receipts but they will now accept cash.

It’s not allowed here. I do like the laundry basket idea.

The commissary started allowing us to use our own bags a few weeks ago, but we don’t have the baggers yet. I’ve only been doing big grocery runs every 2-3 weeks and it takes me a good 30 minutes to check out. I load the conveyer belt, the cashier runs it all through, I load bags, then repeat it all again because a full cart of groceries doesn’t fit on the conveyer belt. There are rumors that we may get the baggers back in a week or two. I’m not sure why the cashiers can touch the groceries to scan them, but can’t put them in their own store bag. Maybe because commissaries have had baggers for decades and you can’t mix the jobs?

For those of you who bag in the trunk, do you buy a lot? Do you just ask the cashier not to bag? I am still buying two weeks worth of groceries to limit shopping trips. When I start being rung up I ask that my items get put back in the cart, usually they’ll just bring me another cart, lid that one up and take the one I had been shopping with away to be sanitized. It does t take me that long to bag my groceries at my car, but I have a large SUV with a tailgate that I can pull down so it makes it easier to bag.

There have not been any 'rules' here about bagging one way or the other. I've continued to take my reusable bags to ALDI with no issue. I generally let Publix bag into the disposable plastic bags as I'm generally just picking up a few items there that ALDI did not have. I like to keep a few of those disposable bags on hand to reuse for various messy projects so that keeps me supplied.

Before Covid-19, I always brought my own bags. Since Covid started, we just put everything back in the wagon. My goal is to get in and out of the stores as quick as possible. I think check-out goes much faster because I’m not thinking which bag I’m putting things in (soft, heavy, meats, frozen, etc). I think I’ll keep this “new no bagging” up even after Covid.

During our alert levels 4 and 3 we were asked not to bring reusable bags into the supermarket but to just put everything back in the trolley and then pack in the carpark. I think it was more about not slowing lines down too much and keeping people moving.

We’ve never not been allowed to bring our own bags (UK) but I think this might also be because we don’t have baggers like many of your grocery stores do so we are the only people touching our own bags. I use the self scanner (did pre-covid too) so I pick something up and scan it on its way into a bag in my cart.

I live in Massachusetts and reusable bags are temporarily banned by the state. I get either plastic or paper bags from the stores, depending on which town. Some towns have banned plastic. I just fill my bags at the car after I go to Costco.

THe grocery store where I work never stopped allowing reusable bags but the customer has to bag their items into them.
personally it's a rule I'd wish we'd keep, only because some peoples reusable bags are totally nasty and reek(otherwise reusables dont bother me at all)

You can ask for your groceries to be put back in your cart and you can bag them at your car. That is why I have been doing. I've been doing this, too. For those of you who bag in the trunk, do you buy a lot? Do you just ask the cashier not to bag? I usually fill 4-5 reusable bags in the trunk. When I ask them not to bag, the cashier will sometimes ask the bagger to grab an empty cart. Items are loaded into it after being scanned.

I haven't been inside a grocery store for months, so can't say for sure. But our city had banned plastic bags several years ago and lifted that rule for 1 year starting in March or April. So I suspect no reusable bags for awhile for us.

I just got told off for taking my reusable bag in a store I rarely shop at. There were no signs to say they were not allowed and it's one of those stores where they encourage you to bring your own bag. It's had to know what is right and what is wrong lately.

They are charging again here. I have boxes in the back of my car for Walmart pickup. I don’t want stuff sliding all over so the boxes work at containing stuff.
No idea if bags are allowed in the store but it’s easy enough to just put back in the cart snd then bag at the car if we were to go in.

I'm in So Cal, too. I wish there was a consistent policy with bags/bagging. I can't think of anywhere that was giving free bags anymore. Every store I have been to has a different system for bagging. I feel bad for the cashiers have to say it a million times a shift!
