Did y’all know that black and brown kids are disproportionately disciplined in schools and that instead of actually thwarting a school shooting or saving lives police presence in schools just serve to harass Black youth. Another instance of racism making us all less safe. Is this also true in schools that are predominantly black? I used to work at a predominantly black elementary school (I think there were 10 white and Hispanic kids tops at that school). I did not find this to be true at my particular school. Our SRO was there to make sure there weren’t weapons, and to investigate abuse allegations and to break up fights. I have always wondered about this. Just curious. The function of why they are even in the schools change if it’s predominantly black school. Black neighborhoods and schools are policed and white schools and neighborhoods are protected. If you live in an all white neighborhood think about what police presence is like in your area. I’m not an expert or an educator but the research is out there. Tons of studies done regarding race discrimination education anti racism etc. Why this isn’t apart of the conversation when we discuss school shootings I’ll never know. Research: nicic.gov/girlhood-interrupted-erasure-black-girls-childhood-2017Keyword search “equitable schools” or start with Georgetown Law Center or another university doing the work of making schools equitable.

This board is definitely liberal. It is now but it hasn't always been so, by a long shot. When Obama was president the shoe was definitely on the other foot.

But this thread and a few others have been filled with a lot of passive aggressive attempts at call outs and I'm not going to lie, it's getting old. Because really, what's not being said is that a bunch of you think it's a group of *liberal* peas that are bringing this place down. Ding ding ding ding ding. The evil liberal peas.

I think the reason this has not been done is because threads that don’t start out political sometimes become political. What then? There’s no mechanism for us to move them to other board. Also, the political peas have as much right to be here as anyone else. I find religious threads and game threads super annoying, but I’m not demanding they have a separate board. So you are okay with making a large number of people uncomfortable and anxious by the number and content and even titles of the political threads. Just because you can't be bothered to put them all in one place where those that are interested can have at it as much as they want? yes Scroll by and don't open them It would be nice if we could hide certain threads like we can posts on fb, but it isn't necessary

If someone is truly uncomfortable or the board is causing anxiety then it is that member’s responsibility to do what she needs to do for herself (take a break, skip threads, etc).

I think I've only once had the experience here of what I would describe as internet bullying. I certainly have had plenty of people disagree with me about plenty of things; criticize me or my thoughts; tell me they thought there was something wrong with me; etc. But I think of bullying online as more of an ongoing, personal phenomenon, and I fixed my problem with the person I felt was trying to do this by, well, blocking them (which is much nicer than when I had someone at a job who was behaving similarly).
It's hard to escape politics generally, Trump specifically, or COVID right now, because American life has transformed over the past several months and people are going to be talking about it because it affects them so much. It can be wearying, and I definitely have "stay off of Twitter and don't open COVID posts on other media sites" days where I just need a break.

For a while, my anger and really, my fear, became my overriding emotion. I have taken steps back from social media in general because I constantly felt on edge and angry. I am sure many of you consider me a "pitchfork pea". I have made an effort to temper the tone of my posts here. I will say, though, that there are an awful lot of people with sorry hands that complain about this place being dirty. A pea with whom I have long standing disagreements has spent the last few years harassing me and others. She doxxed a member here. The story she tells is that I challenged her mental wellness, as if that happened in a vacuum. So yes. Some of us have been and can still be nasty at times. I'm trying to keep my interaction here positive and supportive. But this thread and a few others have been filled with a lot of passive aggressive attempts at call outs and I'm not going to lie, it's getting old. I want to add that this is a message board so when we read posts we don’t hear the tone or see the hand gestures, etc so we each read the posts in our own way. I have no doubt that most peas would say the same words face to face but I absolutely believe the words would interpreted differently meaning not as negatively or harsh.

This is the second time you’ve referenced the situation between Elaine and I inaccurately. I’ve asked you to ignore me and have let you know I don’t plan to engage (several instances across many threads) nothing about that says harassment. Actually calling it that is an outright lie and revisionist AF. I won’t try and rally anyone to call out your behavior for what it is because again this place never changes. It’s probably why we are all still here. Acknowledge I’ve tried for at least a year to get you to simply ignore my posts/threads and not speak to me. Both you and Elaine. Both of you would rather fight even though it’s clear I’ve washed my hands. Predictable I’ve never deleted a post and stand by everything I’ve ever said here. I have an inbox full of pea apologies and haven’t responded to a 1. I’m perfectly fine with everyone keeping the same energy they’ve always maintained.

Because really, what's not being said is that a bunch of you think it's a group of *liberal* peas that are bringing this place down. I am the most bloody of the bleeding heart liberals, and I believe that statement to be true. I think there is/are a group(s) of peas who have and continue to push others who don’t believe in the same things the liberal peas do. Or don’t tow the line like some would like. I learn a lot about tolerance/politics/different lifestyles and beliefs by reading and actually listening to what many of the more centrist and (even) right leaning peas have to say. And no, I’m not talking about the peas who poop and run, never to be seen again. I dislike that from anyone, no matter the topic. With this post I now fully expect to be removed from a specific FB group formed after trump was elected. I recently returned to FB after a 2.5 year hiatus primarily for my groups....but so be it 🤪

haven't read the thread, only commenting on the op I think it depends on how thick of a skin you have and how raw your emotions are on a given topic. I do feel if you stray from the current liberal ideology and ideals in anyway, there are posters who are ready to pounce and then there are people who will jump in Sometimes I think the peas are just paying lips service and trying to be woke. People think THEY are right and that THEY have the answers and sometimes forget that others have opinions too. And I think this board has people who feel others should just flip a switch and be on the same page. Sometimes it takes a while the absorb and change and when you have people constantly berating you, often people dig in their heels and refuse to change. I think the right fighters and the ones who think it should be 100% this way do their causes more harm than good and think that shows here My dil thinks this board is a bunch of woke Karens I agree that everyone will not be on the same page at the same time. And that some people do much more harm than good to their causes. I prefer Woke Wanda. 😉

Radishes are the devils vegetable. But, you can cook radishes in things like stew and they become almost like little potatoes. Now THAT is the devil speaking. You cook out all of the crunchy deliciousness of a raw radish.

It was sarcasm because as has been stated above, the fact that we outnumber the conservatives right now and do silly things like asking for fact-based evidence doesn't mean we're "ganging up" or "bullying" Do we need to make a rule that when someone says something that more liberal peas are likely to disagree with, no more than five are allowed to respond in disagreement? No more than two? At what point does it become "ganging up?" To your point about the continuum, I think most people see that. I'm pretty far left on the continuum compared to most here. Most of the liberal peas are not as far left as me, but we agree on a lot, and I can "see" their point even if my ideal world preference would be something else. The same would be true of some actual conservative issues, which I differentiate from Trumpist issues. I would posit that some people use being "independent" or "seeing both sides" as an excuse to avoid taking a stand on issues that can be uncomfortable, but that truly are right/wrong issues. Racism is wrong. It's time to stop excusing grandpa for making racist statements because "that's just how it was when he was growing up." That's just one example, of course, but it's also probably one of the most common ones.

It's getting really old. Many of us peas are tired of every post turning into a political debate. We can't even have a decent discussion about how to move forward in a constructive way so that the majority can enjoy the board. It's sad really.

When I say I see both sides, it isn't black and white that racism is right or wrong. Racism is wrong, but what you consider racist may not be to someone else or maybe that person just hasn't thought about it enough. There are a shit-ton more issues than just racism. And yes, you are much further left than I am, but we have always maintained civility. I think the meanness of the board would come in the form of personal attacks and posting sparky things anytime someone posted, not just after the post you wanted to snark.

I’m grateful that the liberals I know do not talk or attack like SOME of the liberal peas. I like that I can see both sides and enjoy hearing differing opinions but get tired of the attacks.

I am not a thread starting pea, but I read every day and occasionally contribute. As so many have mentioned, this board is much kinder than the old one. And I think that the political climate and the pandemic have definitely put people on edge and made them more likely to react a bit harsher than their normal pre-COVID voice. While the board is still much nicer than the old one, some members are reacting to the current change in tone. And yes, there will always be mean girls in a group, that is an unfortunate part of participating in a message board. Jeremysgirl and sunnycalimom (sorry, my tablet won’t let me tag you) please don’t feel left out. I always enjoy hearing from both of you, you are a positive force in helping us to understand mental illness and how it can impact anyone. Please keep posting! See this, in part, is exactly what the thread is about. Name calling and labeling. While the conservative right claims that they’ve left the board because of meanness and hatefulness, they continue to label and name call. I’m probably considered a pitchfork pea then—and I don’t like it or appreciate it—same as when I’ve been called a “libtard, a snowflake, mentally ill, a bitch, crazy, or a echo chamber pea” or when I’ve been attacked for pointing out something to stop rumors or non-factual statements—where the person going on the attack hits me personally and calls me the bully—yet labeling me further. I’ve yet to leave because of those things. While some say that it’s a few peas, I’m going to disagree—there are those who are not always the main subject or prolific posters who do their share of coy, cloak & dagger sanctimonious, righteous labeling and name calling. (And quite often they’re the first to post on just how mean and hateful the other peas are)

im probably guilty of this as i read the op, posted and then have only read from my first post. Are there non political topics that people feel the board is mean on? I hardly ever post on the political posts, unless its something local to me, like the Amy K thread. So I would say, yes, there are non political threads where people have been mean. It seems though, that a thread may start out as non political, and because so much political is now threaded in to everything, it comes in somehow. Even COVID and masks, and life...it all somehow comes back sometimes to political these days. I'm ok with scrolling past the political threads. I don't find it that difficult. It's ok to be uncomfortable.

FTR I love parsnips, they make delicious soup. Never tried that, will have to in the fall. I sometimes put them in beef stew. They are great in soups. Also, if you haven't had roasted parsnips you haven't lived. They are absolutely delicious and much better than carrots. And F you if you think differently because you're wrong /totally kidding/. I love getting enraged over subjects with absolutely no stakes. Kinda relieves the pressure off the shit show that is 2020. Continue on.

OK. What I meant by peas that are liberal was that it wasn't all the liberal peas doing it, but that the ones who seem to be doing it are liberal. Well, see now, I'm going to choose to step away from this thread because I disagree that someone who "hasn't thought it through enough" should get a pass. (The rest of this is not in response to you.) I also see that someone who was rude to me on another thread is posting up there about mean peas, and I find that super upsetting, so look - poof - I'm going to choose to go do something else rather than demand satisfaction by calling her a bully. I'll be back when I've had a break and managed my own emotional response. See how easy that is? ETA: I actually don't have an opinion on parsnips. Can take or leave them. Carry on.
