I was in Home Depot yesterday and they had a sign about that. I was not aware of it until then.

I'd be happy to help eliminate that problem if I could actually go in the bank. I have well over $300 in rolled coins here that I would love to get rid of.

As a retail manager, I have been dealing with this for several weeks. I can get ONE roll of quarters a week from our bank, when I normally get 50.
And the customers who get pissy when I ask if they have the .02 for their transaction, and I explain that I will need to give them their change in nickels and pennies. Seriously, you don't have .02 or a nickel, so I don't have the give you the .98 in nickles and pennies? I am speaking specifically at the b*tch that threw the .98 back at me on Friday.
And also, just an FYI, stores cannot 'quarantine' the coins. The coins I give you in change, may have come from a prior customer that is a carrier. It is better to use a debit/credit card right now.
Seriously people, can't we all just try to be a little more tolerant right now?

The one tiny grocery store here in town is asking for people to bring in their spare change and sell it to the store because this has become a big problem for them.
Personally, I rarely use cash these days and probably only used it once or twice since March. I've even started doing mobile ordering and payment at restaurants just to limit the things I come into contact with. I'm surprised there are so many people out there using cash.

Wow! I haven’t been out in two weeks so had no idea. I have about $100 in change I was trying to exchange a few weeks ago but the counter machine was out of commission. Bummer!

I have an abundance of coins in my house from years of my husband pulling them out of his pocket and setting them down somewhere. I try to use the coin exchange machine at my credit union as much as possible, but I do feel like a dope standing there causing a racket with my $40.00 worth of coins.

Whenever I use one of those machines I totally feel like everyone within a 3 mile radius can hear my coins and they must all be staring at me. I hate it!

People are touching money at all? Yech. All coins that we had before this, are sitting here in a bowl, safe and sound. Ready to spend if a normal life ever returns. I will never forget the customer I had who told me she would not use credit or debit cards because she did not want to touch a "dirty" card reader ...as she handed cash to me and then took change from me. Cash is filthy! There is a store around here with a sign on it to the effect that if you just use cash, you have to have exact cash and coins. They will not give coins or bills back. I heard a rumor that Disney World is going to go cashless in the parks (but obviously I do not know if that is true). The idea is that guests use cards or put money on Magic Bands.

We deal with a lot of cash at work. We have to pay the bank a fee for coins. I cash in my coins at work to save us a little money. Obviously, just a drop in the bucket, but I do my part and I don't get charged like I would at a Coinstar and don't have to roll my change.

My bank has a fee-free coin day. They recently said they'd go completely fee free for a week.
A small grocery store is asking for coins. I exchanged several rolls for cash. I have more.
If I pay with cash, I'm trying to pay with exact change. Otherwise, it's debit card all the way. I'm trying to get my dad to use his card more or use exact change. He hoards his change.
Meijer is not letting anyone use cash at the self check out machines. Any bottle return slips for cash have to be done at the service desk.

It is because my mom isn't going to the store! LOL! She is Queen of Coins! Her purse is heavy because of all the coins she has. She is the one that will give a clerk $0.98 in coins.
I have seen the signs in a couple of stores that if you pay with cash they want exact change.

We have a couple of businesses here that are cash only. Family-owned, seasonal ice cream stands and bakeries, farmers’ markets. I try to spend coins there.

We have hundreds of dollars in coins at our house because we throw loose change in jars. We don't have a local branch to turn in coins and I don't like having to pay the fee at the coin star machine. So it collects. When DH and DS went to TX in December they took a big bag with them to our bank and turned them in for cash. I think he had over $200 in that instance.
I'd happily turn them over to someone if it was a straight exchange.

We have 4 full protein containers of coins... started the 5th a couple months ago... we are cash based-ish... so all the change goes into them... we usually turn them in before a vacation... each canister holds 150-200... we just havent taken them to the bank...
I didnt know there was a shortage...

FYI Coinstar does not charge a fee if you take your money back in the form of a gift cert. I put my coins in then get an Amazon cert and go home and add it to my account.

I'm always surprised when people say their bank took their rolled coins. Every financial institution I've been to wants them loose so they can reject any non-coin objects.

I'm always surprised when people say their bank took their rolled coins. Every financial institution I've been to wants them loose so they can reject any non-coin objects. Our bank only accepts rolled coins, not loose. They require you to write your name and account number on them so the bank knows who to contact if the coins don’t add up. There used to be one bank here that had a coin machine and didn’t charge a fee if you added the total to your bank account instead of getting paper bills. Then someone complained that their total was off a little bit and In response the bank removed the machine. Annoying. Now coins build up in our house since DH refuses to spend them as he hates carrying change. I used to use them at the laundromat when I washed big bedding, but now the laundromat has gone completely digital/card only. We’re primarily using debit cards since CV19, but I do spend coins at small businesses when I can (mainly the local ice cream stands that are cash only).

A few years ago we rolled about $300 in coins that we had saved to use for a vacation. The bank made us unroll it all and counted it through their machine.

I had no idea. I have a ton of change. My dad taught us as kids to not spend our change. He said to always put it aside for either an emergency or a treat. He used to toss his change into a drawer and then on our birthdays, we were allowed to take a handful per year of age and whatever made it to the bed was ours to keep, anything falling to the floor went back into the drawer. My sisters used to sneak in ahead of time and make a pile of all the silver. Dad was no dummy so he would give the drawer a good stir before they started.
A couple of years ago I came across this awesome change sorter on Craigslist. It was originally owned by a lady that owned a couple of laundry facilities. When she passed, her son sold it to me for $25. It is an older one, all metal, and when I looked it up online I was surprised to see they sell new ones for around $1,300. And that was a new one with plastic collection drawers instead of the metal that mine has. My renter was fascinated with it and he begged me to let him buy it from me. I like it, which is why I bought it in the first place. I told him to keep looking on Craigslist and he might get lucky. I did see another similar to mine, but they wanted $600 for it. Still a bargain, but over his price.
I put all my change into it and have probably at least $1,000 in there by now. I would happily turn it in. I will have to check my bank to see how they handle change exchanges.

It is the craziest thing lately. I’ve worked at my place of employment for over 9 years. We have had more cash transactions in the last 2 months (since reopening) than we have in the previous 9 years. We don’t sell 20.00 items. We are talking over 100.00 purchases with cash, multiple, daily. I would say 80% are paid in cash. I have to make cash deposits daily instead of weekly or biweekly. My manager is letting the change go on people’s orders because we have such a hard time getting change at the bank. I’ve had to ask my employees to bring in change so we can buy it from them. It’s the oddest thing ever.

ETA: after reading the article, it seems it would not be so easy to spend them. No one wants to take coins. In a normal world, right now cashiers give you the stink eye for spending cash. Like I’m expecting to pay with Monopoly money or something. AND container store here is even bucking the nj law where you have to accept cash and are not accepting cash. To my knowledge the state law has not been lifted or paused for the pandemic but the container store was not accepting cash last week when I went there. The banks here are only providing Services at the drive or by phone so you can’t even take your coins to the bank as they won’t go they the vacuum tube thing. I have 3 jars of coins but I can’t use them, perhaps they will be useful when we reach a post apocalyptic world but I’m stuck with them right now. The only places happily accepting my cash right now are when I tip in cash and I’m not petty enough to tip in coins
