We need some general weeding, pruning, etc done in our yard. There’s a guy on Nextdoor who is looking for yard work as his hours at his regular job have been cut. I asked him how much he charges, but he just said ‘whatever you want’. So what’s a reasonable hourly amount to pay someone for yard work? We live in MI for reference. TIA

I’d probably pay $20 an hour. You are taking on the liability if he gets hurt since he doesn’t have an insured business, so I wouldn’t have him trimming trees or any roof work.

I pay someone $25 a week to mow my lawn.. it's a small lawn. All I have him do is mow and weed eat with the weed eater. Best $100 or so money I spend a month. I would give up my beloved tea if I had to...just to keep him.

This job would be trimming hedges and pulling weeds by their roots, so quite a few hours of work.

I’m in IL and the workers who do my mowing and misc yard work charge $30/hour. They’ve also done tree trimming/deadwood removal for me, that sort of thing. Maybe ask him if $25/hour is okay by him?

I live in OH and pay $35/week for lawn cutting and edge trimming (just for reference).
My lawn guy is here today with 1 other guy. They are trimming bushes and small trees, doing some weed control and otherwise prepping for mulch. They have been here for 5 hours and are now cleaning up all the debris and trimmings to haul away. I generally pay him $300 but I will likely pay more as I asked him to do a few more things (like take out some dead bushes).

I have a hard time paying by the hour on jobs like this until I know the worker well enough as some can dilly dally around, others work fast, etc. Could you do a lump sum for x job. List the tasks you need to have done and when they are done, you pay x amount. Of course, keeping in mind how long you think the job should take from past experiences and multiplying that by a reasonable hourly rate.

My sister pays my kids $30 each time they mow, weed wack, and pull weeds. Her yard is average sized and it takes one kid about 2 hours to do it all.
I would pay an adult at least $20/hr for that kind of labor.

My landscaper charges $25 per hour for that kind of work outside of mowing. I’m in MA.

We have someone come in for spring and fall cleanup. We handle all other yard work and maintenance. They charge $250 to do it and are usually here 4-5 hours. They trim bushes, clear beds, pull whatever weeds are popping up, trim trees a bit, etc.

Pulling weeds by hand requires far more manual labor than mowing & edging.
I would pay at least $30 an hour or $100 for 3 hours.

Groups of 3 teens, working as a trio charge $10 per hour per teen (you get all 3 of them at the same time) it might take less time with 3 doing the work. I want to say they have a 2 hr minimum. (So $60 for 3 teens to come for 2 hrs)
We have a large yard/mowing area. I think he karen service costs $100 a week to mow and edge. They’ve done a crappy job this year—they keep going to fast around curves, and it’s turfing the lawn on the curves. It’s too late to find a regular guy this year, but we will be looking come winter.
Our lawn service charges hourly by person if you want extra stuff—like debris picked up, weeding, leaves cleaned up...they are expensive.

I pay my cousin’s kids $15/hour (minimum wage here). They are ages 12 & 14.
Lawn mowing with weed whacking is $25 by a kid, $35 by a professional landscaper.

I would not be paying on an hourly rate.
If you know what you what done then I would be asking for a price on the total time needed, example being $100 for 3 hours. An hourly rate could lead to the job being extended without necessarily being warranted.

Well, where I live lawn care is year round. In the summer and fall it is rainy so they come every week. Winter and spring less rainy and they come about every two weeks. They mow, trim, edge and clean up. Acre lot and pay $200 a month. They charge extra to trim bigger trees and clean the Royal Palms, they are about 40 feet tall and we have several.
