We live in MN and grill year round. DH really wants a smoker. We live in a townhome and have a patio out back.
Anyone have a recommendation or thoughts on what kind of smoker/brand of smoker? I know there are electric ones, wood, pellets... We don't have a wood source, but I could always find one. He would likely only be smoking meat/proteins.

We bought a Pit Boss wood pellet grill/smoker from Lowes and we love it. It requires pellets, so you dont have to find your own wood source- you just have to buy pellets. Traeger is another brand, but they are much more expensive

I was going to say Traeger too, I have no idea if it is worth the cost though. My husband just got one (gifted from a relative) he is cooking on it tomorrow. He is on cloud 9.

DH just got one for his 30-year work anniversary (they send a gift catalog so you can pick your own gift). It's a Camp Chef. IDK anything about the brand but it was free so we like it. DH has used it four times and everything has been delicious so far. It's electric and uses pellets.

My husband has a Rec Tec - an electric pellet smoker similar to a Traeger but with a few different differences and a little more expensive. He’s never had a bad experience with it. We love it and it’s in constant use when he’s home.

I would also suggest a Traeger. Well, I've never used one, just going by my DH.

We have a Bradley electric smoker and we love it. DH loves that he can set the timer for the smoke and heat and only have to check on it once in a while.

we have a medium size Traeger. We love it. our first smoker was an electric, box style one. it was barely ok. the Traeger is definitely worth the money. now, their pellets are kind of shit. the are not pure hardwood, but just flavored with oil. i would recommend getting pure hardwood pellets from another brand.

We have a Bradley electric smoker and we love it. DH loves that he can set the timer for the smoke and heat and only have to check on it once in a while. My Traeger has WiFi and I can set the timer, temp, etc. all from my phone or iPad or the smoker itself and make any changes I want without stepping outside, so if I need to set the temperature higher after 2 hours of low heat smoke, I can do it from my couch. It also has a temperature probe, so you can also monitor it in the Traeger app on your mobile device. I have a serious love affair with it. I also had an electric Masterbuilt box smoker for a couple of years before spending the $800 for my Traeger Pro 575. There is no comparison.

We spent a huge amount on an amazing Napoleon grill when we built our deck. There is just no room for both the Napoleon and a Traeger, as much as we would have loved one of those too! I did look into them, but the Bradley fit our needs/space better at the time. But if we ever need to upgrade we will definitely be looking at one!

My sons just pitched in and bought dh and I one for mothers day/fathers day. One has a traeger, one a pit boss, and one a green mountain. They all agreed on getting us a green mountain, as it was the most bang for the buck, better built, and has the best customer service.

We have a Char broil electric digital cabinet smoker. It fits in our tiny condo balcony next to our grill. Note I say “our”, but it’s really strictly my boyfriend’s domain. We had a Pit Boss pellet smoker but he sold it. He felt it was too problematic and has been much happier with the Char Broil.

Our Rec Tec has the WiFi and app capabilities too, and two probes. They are handy if you’re cooking two different kinds of meat. The thing is huge and can handle a lot of meat .

I personally have a Masterbuilt digital electric. I also use an IGrill Mini thermometer. It helps me to check temp and trends from my phone while sitting on the couch. I know when to add more chips without going outside. That may sound lazy to some of you, but its really nice if you’re working on something. I have the model reviewed here indoor2outdoor.com/best-smoker-for-beginners/ . It has a temp alarm you can set. It woks perfectly for smoking jerkey or salmon, as it helps you ensure the temps stay low at all times.

I have a Cookshack electric smoker. It's super easy. It just takes a small puck of wood, and you don't really have to do anything during cook time.

We have a Green Mountain Grill pellet smoker. Love it. We are hoping to smoke bacon for the first time soon. We love the convenience of a pellet smoker. Very easy to change out flavors if you like to do that.

We also have a Green Mountain Grill pellet smoker. Dh had a Bradley before. When it came time to replace he did quite a bit of research and decided on GMG. He has had it for about a year and loves it. He also smokes year around...even when we are in the negative digits. LOL

I would definitely say to go with the wood pellet type smokers.
I have a Treager and would not buy another one. I think I got mine at the time they were just starting to have them built in China and the quality of mine is poor. Below poor. I have basically gutted out the entire smoker and the first time around I used all genuine parts. Those are expensive and they are slow to ship them. I have since gone to replacement parts off Amazon and have found those to be the exact (and I do mean exact down to the parts numbers imprinted on them) same parts at a small fraction of the price, with free 2 day shipping... I also switched to Pit Boss pellets and all is good now.
So while I might not recommend a Treager, I know those who have gotten newer ones that are not as problematic. I still say to stay away from Treager pellets. They are too soft. I like Pit Boss and they are easy to find. They do a much better job!

They do a much better job! yeah, this. we have a traeger but heard that their pellets use other woods and oils in their pellets. other pellet brands have a higher/pure content of the wood the are supposed to be like hickory, cherry, apple etc. and not that and filler wood.

I received a Traeger in December for my birthday. I like it, I think. There’s a learning curve and everything takes twice as long a shot it should.
However, I infinitely prefer it to my charcoal smoker, which I always struggled to keep going.

Traeger! Love ours! QVC had a great bundle in Sept? Even not as a TSV, I think it would be a good package deal.

We have a Masterbuilt which there was nothing wrong with and DH just ordered himself a PitBoss. The Masterbuilt was easy to use and took up less space but the Pitboss you can do more stuff on it (like bake pizza) but it has hot spots and so far DH has burned a lot of food learning how to use it Watch out with the upgrades I swear our backyard patio is turning into a bbq graveyard... DH has a red smoker that uses lava rocks, a propane grill, a Weber briquet barbecue, the Masterbuilt, and now the Pitboss. I should probably just start putting them on the curb with a free sign... it's kind of getting ridiculous.
