So horse riding in 100° heat yesterday got to me.
I drank almost 40oz of water before I rode (starting 1.5 hours prior).
I then drank another 80oz of water and 16oz of fresh iced tea with some sugar.
I got a bad headache so I took 1 tylenol. Also got super tired.
After all those fluids, I barely peed.
This morning my mouth and lips are dry and I am still tired but not as bad.
Besides Gatorade, is there anything else I should drink/eat to help?

I used to have to take salt tablets when riding during the summer in SoCal. This was back before Gatorade was readily available everywhere.
Why not Gatorade? I drink the zero sugar kind and find that it does the trick now when I’m out boating or kayaking on a hot day.

Keep pumping the fluids and eat bananas and something salty like crackers.
A blended frozen banana would be perfect.

I don't know if it is research based but I've heard you should start hydrating the day before (assuming you know).

I drink coconut water, usually with the pineapple flavor. I think it is naturally hydrating. It took awhile to get used to the taste and it’s not exactly inexpensive, but it works.
We are outside a lot, hiking and kayaking and playing with the little kids on our block and it always refreshes me. A friend uses the tiny squirt bottle flavors, but you need to read those ingredients to see if you can ingest them safely as I know you have allergies/reactions to some stuff.
At least you had a day of fun with the horse! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I would take 4 if you still have a headache and just relax in coolness today. You were seriously dehydrated. I walked in 99 deg heat last week for about 2 hours. It was stupid. I drank and drank and drank and never peed, but by the next day I was peeing a lot again and decided not to go out for walks in 99 deg heat (I was walking with a friend) again. You'll feel better soon.

I know that you mentioned you do drink a lot of fluids during the day because of your POTS. But just a word to the wise, always always always hydrate the day before you think you’re going to be out in a lot of heat. My nephew who coaches Division III football also suggests drinking pickle juice as in dill pickle juice because it’s high in sodium and electrolytes. So if you have some of that and don’t mind the taste I’d give it a try. But it sounds like you’re doing all the right things.

Poor horse. I can't imagine taking one out in 100 deg heat. Seems cruel.

It took me the better part of a week to recover from heat exhaustion.
I had goosebumps, was cold/chills, joint aches, muscle cramps. I was drinking 150 Oz of liquid daily and it still took a week to feel normal.

So if you have some of that and don’t mind the taste I’d give it a try. But it sounds like you’re doing all the right things. My son’s troop leader said the same thing about pickle juice last weekend. The troop was working on an Eagle project in 105 degree temps. The temps this weekend have been in the 111-113 degree range, so I’m happy they took this weekend off.

I hope you cooled your horse out properly. Yup! 100° is the max temp horses go out at the ranch. Walked her out, got her to the paddock, and hosed her down. Got her back to her stall that has a big fan going. Their stalls are rather cool due to how they are made.

Got her back to her stall that has a big fan going. Their stalls are rather cool due to how they are made. 👍🏻 Horses, despite being big, strong working animals, are much more sensitive than many people realize. Are you riding western or English?

You need to be careful with drinking so much water. Hyponatremia is dangerous. Drink something with an electrolyte/salt instead.

Body Armor is far superior to gatorade and it tastes better too. Gatorade is mainly sodium, Body Armor is potassium
It sounds like you need the electrolytes
