I was in a small rural town today and noticed that there are a lot of signs up in yards for Trump and other Republicans. Along with them were signs saying, "To preserve our heritage, vote Republican." I was appalled. My thoughts are that these signs are overtly racist and I can't believe that people would put these in their yards. I am curious what others (especially Republicans) would think if they saw these signs?

I think it’s pretty racist, there’s not much in our history I’d really want to preserve.

While I definitely think racist, in my area it is less about race and more about what they consider to be conservative values. God, oil and gas, anti-democrat/liberal anti Califonia
There are so few minorities in my rural area that the racist aspect, while there would be low on the list

Looks like a bunch of white people who are afraid their power and privilege is slipping away. I always like the saying about how equal rights for others isn't fewer right for you. It isn't pie.

I could see this reasoning in my area.

Very racist. What exactly are we preserving? Jim Crow laws? Segregation? A history of treating non-white people like they are less than human? There IS no way of life to be preserved by voting Republican. Unless you want to be able to treat non-white people like shit with impunity. Or if you are Trump or one of his cronies.

I guess it depends what the community thinks is their heritage. In my community, the interpretation would be "The community heritage is the majority religion" and, there are some who are very concerned it is going to be stripped away from them if a Democrat wins and a switch will flip and we will be living in a Godless Communist country on inauguration day where people are banned(!) from practicing their religion.
So I wouldn't say racists in the fact that I don't think they (consciously) have it out for other races, but do believe that other races have it out for them. So it's, in their minds, a preventative issue.
That's not to say there isn't racism going on, because boy howdy, there is. But the majority of the demographic is lily white.

So, in this instance my assumption is that it is white heritage that they are referring to. I could be wrong, though.

Ehh. I know the area you live. I think they meant it to mean church, god, blah blah. They could have picked a better word, or words, for sure. Republicans are always longing for the good old days up here. Eye roll.

While I have seen an increasing number of trump signs around on the highways, I really hope these particular signs stay in the area where I was today.

Yea, that’s even more farm, country, god area. I think you’re reading too much into it. Though I agree it’s a dumb sign.

"OUR" heritage.
You know: white, Christian, cis, heterosexual, patriarchy-drenched, rural, non-elite, MEN, heritage

No thanks, my dudes (and the dudettes who support you). "Your" heritage can't be made better fast enough for me.

Republicans are always longing for the good old days up here. Eye roll. And that right there is a racist dog whistle (and homophobic/anti-LGBT and misogynistic). Because exactly WHO found the old days to be so good? POC in the days of Jim Crow laws? Women before they had the right to vote? Or when they couldn’t own property in their own names? Or when they received even less per hour for the same work a man does? Or pre-the Pill? Or LGBT who used to get beaten up, fired, and discriminated against a thousand ways? Who couldn’t legally marry the loves of their lives? The only people truly longing for the good old days are White Christian Men and the women who subscribe to those same oppressive values.

Very true. I agree with you. But I’m still thinking they are thinking like prayer back in schools, morals, value sort of thing. It would also help to know the age of the people with the sign. I could very well be wrong.

Bible belt highest teen pregnancy, no regard for other races... Their prayer isn't teaching them much.... Watch them misquote to Bible frequently........

I vote racist.
You do not have to live with/near people different from yourself to be racist. Some of the biggest racists I have ever met also have never worked or lived by POC. I worked with a woman who voted for Trump solely due to his racism toward Hispanics. I can still remember her telling me, "I've never met one and I will do whatever it takes to make sure I never do."

To me it is just another way trying to get people to vote 'your' way. People will say anything right or wrong to prove their point. Their point maybe just to vote their party, or it could be racist, or they don't even know. I try not to judge. I vote how I vote, not what some idiot sign is saying.

I keep thinking I want to move out of state or to a smaller town and then I see this... no. No, you don’t. Trust me, you won’t like it. I am on the opposite. coast from Lucy, but it is true here too. We moved to a small town for 5 years due to DH's job, and I was told that people always know what you're doing, before you do it, and whether you actually do it or not. Very true and impossible to change. We lasted 5 years and moved back to the "big city" (actually medium sized but big enough not to be everyone's topic of conversation). As for the sign, I see it more as God, guns and religion, but that may be due to the area in which I live and how most people would view it here.

I don't think racist when I hear the word "heritage". I think of history, tradition, beliefs, values.
I would assume the sign meant "help us preserve those values of love of country, patriotism, respect, etc. that helped make this country." But I'm not in the South, if that's where the sign was posted.
