“Protect our heritage” means exactly one thing these days ... continue to allow us to display the Confederate flag and maintain Confederate statues in public places. If that’s not what these people mean, at the very least, they couldn’t care less about being associated with those Confederate humpers. And if they “don’t know” about the Confederate/“heritage” issues going on right now, it’s because they’ve chosen not to know. I am not impressed. If this sign was up in the south I would agree with you, but the confederate flag isn't a part of MN heritage. it's not part of AZ heritage, either, but people still fly it here on their big-ass pickup trucks... care to explain why? I think you think more of some of your neighbors than perhaps is warranted.

Apparently lots of them in that area. There is a big upheaval in a small town close to me regarding the confederate flag that someone has in their window (they live across from the school). Same town had controversy about it last year because people had the confederate flag on their trucks in the school parking lot. ETA that I also just saw on FB that anti-Muslim, pro-Christianity comic books have been distributed around town and Muslims are scared. More people just wanting to save their "heritage" by making these comics.

Okay. But then explain to me how voting Republican is going to bring some idealized version of farm life back that voting for Democrats won’t? Just because people declare something isn’t racist/misogynistic/homophobic doesn’t make it so. It reminds of how when even people on 2Peas used to talk about “jewing people down” at yard sales, and were gobsmacked when told that it was an anti-Semitic phrase. To them, it was a synonym for bargaining. Just because they weren’t aware of the utter offensiveness of the phrase didn’t/doesn’t make it any less so. Just because people claim innocence regarding of the dog whistle nature of the wording of that sign, doesn’t make it any less so. No one is stopping the sign posters from attending church, hunting, ice fishing, barn raising, being patriotic or any of the other activities that sign idealistically represents. But there is something sinister in implying that voting a certain way will impose these values (and the true underlying “values” the people who printed and distributed these signs intended) on everyone else. because just because it is code for something for one person, doesn't make it widespread. I'm not saying that the Republicans around here aren't racist. I'm also not willing to say they all are. Here, the people voting republican care about the following things more than most and many are one or two issue voters: The highest issues around me are Support of the 2nd amendment Support of oil and gas, farms, and other local businesses Are pro-life Very much claim to be Christian, go to church, and pray In addition, they don't want to be told what to do Voting for a democrat means: Taking of your guns Regulations that would choke the economy Allowing babies to be killed up until birth Allowing Muslims to take over and lead us toward Sharia law Indoctrination the children Believing science rather than God And so much more Quite frankly, believing that voting Democrat will lead to those things is offensive and yes, racist (esp about the Muslims) as well as false.

Unless you have one in your yard?

This is exactly what systemic racism is. Of course the signs don’t say “White Power” because that’s racist. The signs say “Protect our heritage” because that isn’t racism, it’s wholesome, nostalgic. Nope, it’s systemic racism. The good old days when everything was all about white males. Let’s go back to the days when women and Blacks and Mexicans and anyone else nonwhite and non male were non threatening to out wholesome midwestern (or fill in the blank with your region of residence) way of life. Just because people don’t think they are being racist doesn’t mean that their concept isn’t racist. That’s exactly the problem is with systemic racism.

I vote racist. You do not have to live with/near people different from yourself to be racist. Some of the biggest racists I have ever met also have never worked or lived by POC. I worked with a woman who voted for Trump solely due to his racism toward Hispanics. I can still remember her telling me, "I've never met one and I will do whatever it takes to make sure I never do."Wowww.....I'm white, and my DH is of Mexican *AMERICAN* descent, and that makes me SO sad! She'll do WHATEVER IT TAKES, and even if it was just to MEET "one", huh? It's not as though they'd have to be friends, but she couldn't handle just MEETING "one" (I love how she refers to a human being as "ONE"---ugh! ) I hope she never meets my DH with his 2 Bachelor's Degrees, 2 Master's Degrees, a very prestigious career, and is a very kind and good human being. I hope she wouldn't be too disgusted or afraid of him! What did Trump say about Mexicans again? She would not believe he has degrees or a good job. She would think it was a lie. You could show her the diplomas and all sorts of proof and she would refuse to believe them. But she is an equally opportunity bigot. She also thinks LGBTQ people need to "find Jesus," because they are going to hell if they do not renounce their "unbiblical lifestyle. " She harassed a co-worker who presents androgynously. (I actually had to write her up for her homophobic personally directed comments to coworkers. Three times, after one verbal warning. She had a "responsibility to Jesus" to "witness" to them, you see. Amazing how that "responsibility" disappeared when her job was in jeopardy.) Believe me, your husband does not want to meet this person and I wish I never had.

The mental gymnastics that occur when someone tries to explain conservative values or heritage.

I only read the OP but my jaw literally popped open at that sign. Awful and completely racist.
