I use half vanilla, half almond extract in mine! This makes me sad as someone with a almond allergy. Rice Krispie Treats have always been my goto safe food, because who messes with the recipe. On the plus side, it will be better for my waistline. A lot of the stuff that is “almond flavored” has no actual almond in it. Artificial almond flavoring is typically made from peach pits. I just learned that recently and was really surprised by it!

I always used to make them from the recipe on the Rice Krispies box and they were always too hard. I kept wondering what the heck I was doing wrong because seriously, it’s Rice Krispy bars and how hard can that really be?
To answer the question, you need to use the *whole bag* of marshmallows and they CAN NOT be stale or even the slightest bit stuck together. Old marshmallows will almost guarantee that they will end up hard. You also need more butter than the traditional recipe calls for. I think it calls for three tablespoons butter which really isn’t enough. I use at least four, sometimes around five, and melt it first. More than half a stick once you butter the pan too. Then I chuck in a good half cup of creamy peanut butter and heat that up too with the butter. Dump in the marshmallows and coat them with the melted butter/PB mixture, and microwave in 30 second bursts stirring in between until the marshmallows are completely melted too. Have the six cups of Rice Krispies measured out in a bowl waiting so they can be mixed in right away when the goo is hot. Use a buttered silicone spatula to spread it all into the buttered pan and pat it down and nothing will stick.
Now take a whole bag of good quality milk chocolate chips. Don’t be cheap, dump that whole bag into a big microwaveable bowl or measuring cup! Add to that a good three heaping tablespoons of creamy peanut butter and microwave that in 30 second bursts, stirring in between until the chips have all melted. Spread all of it on top of the Rice Krispy layer until it’s nice and even. Now put the pan somewhere cool (I stick it in the refrigerator or out in the garage in the winter) until the chocolate sets up. After that they can be left out on the counter. In my house, a 9x13 pan of these doesn’t typically last more than 2-3 days and that’s with just DH and me eating them.
And my final word to the wise, get that nasty goo coated dish right in the sink and fill that bad boy with hot soapy water. If you do this right away it will be much easier to clean. Ask me how I know.
And now I want some. Thanks a lot you Krispy Treat enablers!

You all are fancy af! I’ve always made them per box directions except a little extra marshmallow and butter so the consistency is better. I’ve always thought it was gross to add things (looking at you, fruity pebbles 🤢). But some of these ideas are pretty tempting and I’m going to have to try a couple!

We like to brown the butter.
Last week I saw a recipe that added pumpkin pie spice. I'm dying to try it. With the browned butter of course.

scrappintoee I always thought that Rice Krispies were what we call Rice Bubbles, but in your photo it looks like corn flakes? I've never made Rice Krispie treats, it's an American recipe, although they look yummy so I'm not sure why it hasn't caught on here. We usually make Mars Bar slice, which uses Mars Bars instead of marshmallows. A popular treat here, that can be found at pretty much every kid's birthday party, is Honey Joys. They're made with corn flakes, butter, sugar and honey. The recipe says 1 Tbsp of honey, but I always use 2 Tbsp. I have made four batches of Honey Joys recently - my son is addicted. I think you'd like them too! Come to think of it, I think I shared the recipe on the dinner thread a few months ago.

I don't know why it never occurred to me to mess around with a rice krispy treat recipe, I like them okay, but rarely make them because I always thought they were kind of boring. I'm looking forward to trying out some of the add-ins/ideas mentioned here.

I need to stay off this thread. I have such a love for rice krispy treats! I'm going to make the peanut butter with chocolate on top ones. DH needs to go to the grocery store so he may as well get some Rice Krispies and marshmallows.
Since my surgery I seem to have lost my sweet tooth. I could be in trouble making these!

I add extra marshmallow and a 1/4 cup of peanut butter. So yummy. No chocolate though as this girl just likes her peanut butter Krispies.

Oh, yum! I love them any way except the packaged ones. browned butter fruity marshmallows with special K cereal add butterscotch add chocolate chip frosting mix in sprinkles use cocoa krispies or one time my DS made them and I think he accidentally caramelized the marshmallows by heating them too long. They were still delicious!

I use Milky Way candy bars instead of the marshmallows and spread with melted chocolate chips on top. Yum

Damn. Now I'm going to have to add Rice Krispies and marshmallows to my grocery list. I knew better - but I opened this dammed thread anyway.

I can't make these too often because I would eat the whole pan by myself!

Thanks, everyone. I want to try every. single. kind. you've all posted! Only thing is, I need to give most of them away!!!!! What I'll do is make the fun, different varieties posted here, keep a SMALL portion for my family and I to taste, then IMMEDIATELY take them to friends, our veterinarians, and our awesome next door neighbors. I have eaten WAY too many of these lately! This would be the perfect way to sample many different kinds without gaining 100 pounds! I found out the other day that adding peanut butter causes me to NOT STOP eating them!!!!!!! thank you for posting that---I like that her recipe calls for a bit of SALT, because sometimes they are a bit TOO sweet, and I've considered throwing in some pretzels or something. Ooooh, that just gave me an idea---roasted peanuts in lieu of salt, perhaps? he accidentally caramelized the marshmallows by heating them too long. They were still delicious! YUM! That sounds SO good! I need to try that, because I love things that are a bit overdone. I suppose it'd be similar (or better!) than the roasted mallows I put on top of mine. We spread ours out on a jelly roll pan. Spread a melted big Hershey bar or two and then cut in half long ways and then roll up both like cinnamon rolls so that it has chocolate spirals. I don’t eat them any other way—so good!! I love that and must try it! I like that they won't look like typical, boring RK treats. I'm gonna make a big pan of them for our veterinarians and some friends. Thanks for the great inspiration! scrappintoee I always thought that Rice Krispies were what we call Rice Bubbles, but in your photo it looks like corn flakes? Oooh, that's such a cute name! I'm gonna start calling them that. You're right, mine do look kinda like corn flakes, but they're not (I don't like the way my photos are lighted, even after editing them). I also don't think the way the toasted marshmallows appear in my photo look very appetizing, but....whoa.....they are SO yummy toasted / almost burnt in some cases....hee hee ! Your honey joys look yummy, and I do remember when you posted them. I need to make those sometime---the saltiness of the corn flakes with honey sounds scrumptious!

I've made them the normal way, the scotcharoo way, but the best I ever tasted were at a scrapbook retreat. The gal had a layer of normal rice Krispie treats, a layer of melted caramels mixed with Carnation, topped with another normal layer. Then cut into bars. OMG, I could've eaten the entire tray. Soooo ooey and gooey and yummy! I can't wait to try all of your ideas, too! Thanks!! I've never heard of this version before, I had to look it up! I found a recipe here: Caramel Stuffed Krispy Treats. Let us know if you make them!
