How awful. It's like a bomb was dropped. You can tell there were little explosions going off before the big one, so it does seem like fireworks were going off. Those poor people. Praying for them all.

Praying for them all. The bomb theory was speculation early on. Just saw an interview with a CNN reporter stationed there and the blast blew the window frames off the building into their office. I cannot imagine what people are feeling and how many are injured and lost their lives when all can be accounted for. Do we have any peas there? I seem to remember one (can't remember name) or maybe someone was visiting there at one time.

On the BBC
Lebanon's Prime Minsiter Hassan Diab has said it is "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were being stored in a warehouse.
"I will not rest until we find the person responsible for what happened so we can hold them to account and impose the most severe punishment," the prime minister was quoted as saying by an official Twitter account.
"It is unacceptable that a shipment of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate has been present for six years in a warehouse, without taking preventive measures and endangering the safety of citizens".

Holy shit, that video. That is so much bigger than what I was imagining from the picture. That’s terrifying. This.

I think the 'cloud' that you can see in video #6 is the shock wave from the explosion traveling outward... you can see it 'hit' and shake the camera in the video taken from a ship at sea, too, and in some of the other videos. The shock wave travels a little bit before the dust cloud. I hope they find out who and why someone decided it was okay to store that much of something explosive for that long, too. just horrible.

IF they were attacked (and I am NOT suggesting they were), it most likely would be by Israel, so he’s going to piss A LOT of people off with that speculation.

From BBC News: Israel said in a statement that it had "approached Lebanon through international security and diplomatic channels and has offered the Lebanese government medical and humanitarian assistance". Al-monitor.com: “We share the pain of the Lebanese people and sincerely reach out to offer our aid at this difficult time,” Israeli President Reuven Rivlin tweeted. This is such a tragedy and a sad day for Beirut.

Just heard a blurb on the TV, Lebanon has been suffering for a while, they have only had electricity for 4 hours a day, a plane had to abort a landing when the power went off. I missed most of it. ** The harrowing scenes come after nearly a year of economic and political turmoil that has plunged Lebanon into uncertainty and, according to many experts, brought it to the brink of collapse. Poverty soared to over 50% and scenes of people scavenging garbage dumps for basic necessities have become commonplace. Young people who just months ago staged a popular uprising against the country's political class, widely accused of corruption, desperately searched for a silver lining. ** www.cnn.com/2020/08/04/middleeast/resident-beirut-blast-scenes-intl/index.html

So sad and scary! The videos are crazy!
What (apparently) set off the explosion is ammonium nitrate - it makes it's own oxygen, so once it's on fire there's no going back.

Can't fathom the devastation. Donating in the morning.
Tell me again how gov't regulations suck - things like how things need to be stored, how much can be stored, etc.

From what I've heard from the dangerous goods transport and storage specialist in my life, it's a freakin' mess both in private and government-supervised facilities. You don't want to know the shenanigans about nuclear waste storage either. These are attacks waiting to happen.
