NPR...
”JUST IN: The New York attorney general is seeking to dissolve the NRA.
It’s the most aggressive sanction the state could seek against the powerful gun-rights group after an investigation found evidence that the NRA is “fraught with fraud and abuse.”
This close to the election is just like the Comey letter about nothing in 2016.
Don’t get me wrong, I want the NRA gone but not this close to the election.

Who knows. Do that many people actually care about the NRA? I think the spin that comes from it will be a bigger deal. Just this morning I saw a post going around about "signs of communism" and one of them was "they will take your guns so you can't arm yourself." Wonder if that has anything to do with this. Of course, we all know that dissolving the NRA does not equal taking all guns.
I do think this works in Trump's favor. How much remains to be seen.

This is just what the Republicans need to get Trump reelected. Good grief!

You can hear the GOP spin machine whirring from here. This seems like a waste of time and energy.

And now, some conservative voters who maybe, MAYBE thought they were through with Trump are gonna go running back to him. Because they won’t see this as protecting them from a bunch of money grubbers who are stealing their money—they will see it as democrats trying to take away their guns.

I wonder if it’s really to get some kind of dirt on Trump without him and his lawyers blocking everything? Trump and the NRA are both dirty. I bet they are filthy together.

This has to do with the charity laws being broken.
New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that the state is seeking to dissolve the National Rifle Association in a lawsuit that accuses the leadership of the flagging nonprofit of diverting millions of dollars for their own personal use. According to the suit, the senior leadership of the NRA squandered millions in donations on personal trips, private jets and expensive meals. The suit argues that the four executives, including CEO Wayne LaPierre, shouldn’t be permitted to ever again serve on the board of a New York charity.

So basically the same reasons that Trump's "charitable" foundation was dissolved. Still unhelpful right now. Or maybe they figure better now than in October? Who knows.

The timing sucks. Does anyone in government think before they act these days? Couldn't hold off on this announcement until after the election?

There is this belief that one of the reasons George W won re-election-election was because San Francisco , for a time, started issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.
The belief was this action in SF caused some voters on the right, who would have sat out the election, to come out and vote because they didn’t want to see a Democratic President in office because he could/would push to make same sex marriages legal.
This dissolving of the NRA could and will be seen by many gun owners as an attack on the 2nd Amendment which means, in their minds, the Republicans need to stay in power to protect the 2nd Amendment from the “radical left who wants to take away their guns”. Which may very well cause voters who would have stayed home come out in force to vote.
I suspect this is just how the Republicans are going to spin it.
Very bad time.

Paired with what most believe defund the police means along with large cities like Seattle starting to report they are reducing their police departments, yes bad timing. Seattle is reporting today they are reducing by up to 100 officers and comments are not happy. Will be interesting to see how this may effect (or affect???) WA governor this year now since it was reported after our primary on Tuesday.

What's sobering though to me is, I think this is most definitely going to get Trump back in office. What if that happens? As it is, there is so much civil unrest now. What will happen if he wins again?
That's a frightening thought on both ends. That he's be relected to begin with, and just how much of an uprising there will be if he does.

Is she on his payroll too? Guns is what got lots of republicans around here elected. This is not at all helpful. This gives Trump a platform to stand on.

Damn it!!! I think this will absolutely garner more Republicans to get out and vote for Trump.
And I'll just put this out there even though I'm sure I'll no longer be a pea friend after I do. I'm a Republican, but I do not support Trump and really do not want to see him reelected.
I live in rural south Trump country and of the people I know that are like me, republican but not a Trump supporter, any mention against their fabulous guns or NRA will be what pushes them to vote for him again.
I like my guns but hate the NRA. I'd love to see them demolished, just wish they'd go after them when the election was over.

Their trip to Moscow a few years ago was absolutely ridiculous!!!! What private Russian citizens could carry or have guns? It was so obviously a scheme, and the NRA got busted with that. I thought that it really took a lot away from them after that, so I'm not too sure that this will help 45 with re-election. The ONLY thing that could help him is Russia tainting our election (again).

@river as a Republican, maybe you can talk some sense into your friends. They won't listen to Democrats but maybe hearing from more fellow Republicans who don't like what is going on would help.

Trust me, I try!!! I'll certainly be figuring out something to spin this a better way for them. Most were already going to be a non voter this time, which I think equally puts Trump back in. They don't see it that way though.

Being a Republican does not mean you will no longer be a pea friend, and I am sorry you feel that way. That makes me sad. I have been a Republican, not registered though, most of my life. I can no longer support the party and there is NO way I will ever support Trump. I was a Bush supporter (both of them) and very clearly remember some very heated discussions about George W on the original pea board and I defended him every way I could. LOL Those days are long gone. I don't know if there is anything that will ever make me support Republicans again to be honest. They seem to have become the party of hatred, and I can't support that. The people I have the issues with are those who support Trump, not Republicans in general. I know I am not the only one who feels this way, either.

It's absolutely about charity laws and the NRA diverting money for personal use (just like Trump & fam have done).
However...
The Right is going to twist this as, "Them Dems is goin' after yer guns." And a ridiculous number of people will fall for it.
The Dems need to jump right on this and insist that this is exactly what it is; a penalty for decades of financial illegalities, for using MEMBERS' MONEY for personal indulgences.
Dems -- specifically Biden -- even need to come right out and say they are for legal gun ownership. Over and over, plain and simple, in black and white, using small words.

A lawsuit against a corrupt non profit organization isn't the same as a lawsuit against the 2A itself.
Another group can form to do what the NRA was originally set out to do. And Biden will have opportunities to make it clear that there is a distinction supporting the Second Amendment & supporting corruption in a non profit.
It's a lot earlier than what Comey did to Clinton so there's time to address the distinctions. And it's not going after Trump directly.
Breathe.

If voters are going to re-elect Trump because a state goes after a grifter they were never going to be a reliable anti-Trump voters. They were always going to be looking for the reason to support him, and on Election Day vote for him. Like how studies of Independent voters reveal that the lean Democrats mostly go Democrat, and the lean GOP go GOP. There are fewer truly Independent voters than we think. It's people claiming they are, when they really have their preference. The last 4 years has shown that grifters aren't a deal breaker for the GOP, so what's one more. I don't think this changes the calculus, just forces some people who were wishy-washy to reveal their true intentions sooner.
By being 90 days out, if the polling moves significantly because of this, the Democrats can react to it. Rather than it being an Election Day surprise like with Hillary. They will maybe get bumps in Red states, but those were always going to be Red. The polling this year has shown consistent growth among people who "strongly disapprove Trump." This type of voter is not going to be swayed by going after grifters.
I know people are scared, but once people decide they really don't like something it's hard to get people to change their minds. This year, that includes Trump.

The people I have the issues with are those who support Trump, not Republicans in general. I know I am not the only one who feels this way, either. I'm married to a "lost man" Republican who is not a Trump supporter. Do I wish DH was more liberal, more like the guy I dated and married nearly 40 years ago? Hell yes. But I don't mind that he's become conservative. I actually feel sorry for the guy. His party has left him behind and gone all in for a sleezebag. For Donald fucking Trump. The GOP sold the farm for Donald fucking Trump. Someone who never served his country in any capacity, who demeans those who *do* serve, who blithely takes money from this country and puts it into his own pockets, who has made us the laughingstock of every decent country on the planet, who openly admires despots and tyrants, who doesn't even give a shit that we all know he doesn't give a shit that a thousand of us a day are dying because he's a lying imbecile. "It is what it is." And the GOP, by just doing the bare minimum at their job during the Impeachment, could have let the Democrats stop it and have them take the blame. The Dems would have admirably weathered the Trump Tweetstorms that the GOP so obviously fears.
