It was the first time a significant number of prominent white conservative evangelicals have publicly criticized Falwell Jr. Mark Walker, a former Southern Baptist pastor and Republican congressman from North Carolina, tweeted that Falwell Jr.’s “ongoing behavior is appalling” and called for him to step down. (Walker is the vice chairman of the House Republican Caucus.) Dean Inserra, a prominent Florida pastor and Liberty graduate, tweeted that “the leadership at the top is tragic” and urged the board to “show some courage.” Colby Garman, a Southern Baptist pastor and executive committee member of the denomination in Virginia, also called on Falwell Jr. to resign." Too bad they do not take a stand for our Country!

A friend’s DD was hired by Liberty as Music Director. She moved and made plans. A few weeks before her first semester they told her their first choice became available so they were letting her go. Nice work from a “Christian” university. Seriously?? Did they pay her moving expenses?

Nice work from a “Christian” university. These guys (and gals) who make huge profits selling religion are all money grubbers. I have no problem with anyone living comfortably but to own multiple mansions and yachts etc. from religious donations is absurd! It’s fraud IMO. The atrocious way they treat their faculty is widely known in academia. Tell your DD’s friend she dodged a bullet.

My first thought was this was like Senator Gary Hart from Colorado in 1988...he was the front runner to get the democratic nomination for president. Suddenly photos of him showed up on his yacht in a compromising pose...his political career never recovered. This Falwell photo looks disgusting.

I don't know if Gary Hart was drunk with his pants partially unzipped but it is true that men like this come from both sides of the aisle. What makes this even worse is that he has so many ties to religious institutions...or did..I would say unbelievable but it is not .

Is his daddy the one that said god was going to kill him if his followers didn’t give him a million dollars? I believe that was Oral Roberts. Cut from the same cloth, though.

“How is this Jerry Falwell Jr. photo even real?” tweeted Meghan McCain. “Also if you're running the largest Christian university in America maybe don't put photos of yourself on social media with your pants undone on a yacht - with random women in bad wigs. So gross, so hypocritical.” On Thursday, Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.), a Southern Baptist minister and former Liberty instructor, called for Falwell’s resignation, citing several recent after several scandals. "Faculty and alumni who have been critical of the school’s direction under Falwell Jr. were both shocked and gratified by the news of his leave of absence. “For at least a decade, Liberty’s faculty have labored under Falwell’s increasingly autocratic leadership and been shamed by his public behavior besides,” said Marybeth Davis Baggett, who taught English at Liberty for 17 years and resigned this spring after publishing an op-ed calling for Falwell Jr.’s removal based on his handling of the coronavirus crisis. Just want to quote the three people above who give me some hope.

Pretty sure Gary Hart's whole shtick wasn't trying to tell people what God wants them to do (as if he has an inside line on that).

How Jerry Falwell Jr. Lost His Flock "With Falwell’s ouster, one of the most influential evangelical institutions in the country is facing an identity crisis: There’s never been a time when Liberty wasn’t led by a Falwell. The president has also lost one of his most prominent ties to the evangelical community. Donald Trump earned credibility in Christian circles four years ago in part because Falwell promoted him as the evangelical champion, and now it’s not clear who Falwell speaks for. Liberty’s leaders see Falwell’s statements and actions as unbecoming of a Christian leader, especially for someone in such a high-visibility role. But most of all, Christians inside and outside of Liberty fear Falwell has tarnished the mission of the school, and of evangelicalism—to “train champions for Christ.” Falwell has long courted scandal, but was previously met with seemingly endless patience from his backers at Liberty. The school’s leadership stuck by Falwell as he became one of Trump’s earliest and most dedicated supporters, and when, following the 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, he encouraged students to get concealed-carry permits so they could “end those Muslims before they walk in,” ostensibly referring to terrorists. School leadership supported him through allegations of internal bullying and corrupt self-dealing, and when Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, said he helped Falwell destroy racy “personal photographs.” Falwell didn’t even lose his job in May, when he tweeted a picture of a face mask depicting figures in KKK robes and blackface, an attempt to mock Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. Enough of Falwell’s supporters saw that photo as a debatable political stunt that the controversy dissipated. But it was still a turning point—a moment when pastors, alumni, and board members began questioning whether Falwell should stay in his role." www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/08/jerry-fallwell-evangelicals-liberty/615112/

OMFG "Late in the day, Falwell’s purported exit became complicated. Reached by phone Monday night, Falwell said he was not resigning. He referred further questions to his public relations team, who did not comment. According to Corry, a resignation process had begun, and then broke down. Discussions continued Monday evening. Falwell said late Monday, in response to the university’s statement, that he did resign but that “it’s still up in the air.” On Sunday night, a columnist at the conservative Washington Examiner published an exclusive statement from Falwell saying he has been seeking counseling after finding out his wife, Becki, had an affair with a man the couple met in 2012. In the piece, Falwell characterized the relationship as akin to “fatal attraction” and said the man threatened to reveal the affair if they didn’t pay him hefty sums. The column quoted the man, who has been identified in previous reporting by Politico, BuzzFeed and others as Giancarlo Granda, as denying Falwell’s allegations. On Monday, Reuters quoted Granda as saying that from 2012 until 2018 he had a sexual relationship with Becki Falwell — one about which her husband knew all along. According to Reuters, Granda denied any intent to extort the Falwells and said he was intending to negotiate a buyout from his business arrangement. The Reuters report also said that, according to Granda, Falwell was in the room watching as his wife and Granda had sex. Falwell’s legal team denied that allegation. In Falwell’s earlier statement Sunday, he said the affair was “something in which I was not involved.” Becki Falwell did not return calls or text messages for comment Monday. Efforts to reach Granda on Monday were not successful." www.washingtonpost.com/education/2020/08/24/jerry-falwell-jr-agrees-resign-liberty-university/

How very pious, amIRite? Giancarlo Granda says he was 20 when he met Jerry and Becki Falwell while working as a pool attendant at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel in March 2012. Starting that month and continuing into 2018, Granda told Reuters that the relationship involved him having sex with Becki Falwell while Jerry Falwell looked on. Granda showed Reuters emails, text messages and other evidence that he says demonstrate the sexual nature of his relationship with the couple, who have been married since 1987. “Becki and I developed an intimate relationship and Jerry enjoyed watching from the corner of the room,” Granda said in an interview. Now 29, he described the liaisons as frequent – “multiple times per year” – and said the encounters took place at hotels in Miami and New York, and at the Falwells’ home in Virginia.... Becki Falwell, 53, is a political figure in her own right. She served on the advisory board of the group Women for Trump, which advocates for the president’s reelection campaign. She also spoke as part of a panel with her husband and Donald Trump Jr at last year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, the signature annual gathering of conservatives. Jerry Falwell and others refer to her as “the first lady of Liberty University.”... The material Granda showed Reuters includes screenshots from what Granda said was a FaceTime conversation he had with the Falwells in 2019. During that call, Granda said, Becki was naked as the two discussed their relationship while Jerry peeked from behind a door. Reuters was able to verify Granda’s description of the screenshots. www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-falwell-relationship/

Most Conservative Christians will keep their lips zipped about it,"don't talk ill of the Lord's anointed." This is also why I think they won't talk bad about Trump, but that didn't stop them saying bad things about Obama. You disagree with Falwell in any way shape or form (even the most mild disagreement), then you are fired, your family members are fired and anyone you are friends with is fired. This is not an exaggeration. The Post and the NYT have done in-depth articles on Falwell and people are terrified to come forward, even anonymously. Many of us know never to work for LU, but there are many people who are dependent on their jobs. So no one is embracing him; they just want to work and keep their jobs. They believe in his father's way of doing things and think that Jr. is just a necessary evil now. His brother, Pastor Johnathan, is quite revered and respected. I haven't heard bad things about him at all. I am going to qualify this. MANY people do not embrace him but have no other choice. There are people who think he's all that. You wouldn't believe how many people think that Falwell's letter was "fake news." Really. People pointed out that HE wrote it and they said "no, you're wrong." As soon as they couldn't deny it anymore, it was all the "people without sin, cast the first stone" type of thing. Same people who rant against the democrats. Ugh. The best thing for Liberty is that Jr is out, but the temp guy they put in is pretty awful himself.

Religious people are used to contorting words and finding "deeper meaning' and "interpretation" in text. So is it any wonder they will twist and turn to find some way to ease their cognitive dissonance that an obvious charlatan is a "moral (majority) man" who can help lead people to righteousness?

The Board is filled with his people and they do his bidding until finally, they couldn't. The next thing LU needs to do is get rid of the board. We have all known for years about the pool boy and really, all of us thought it was Jr.'s relationship with him and that's what he was hiding. I must say I didn't think I could be surprised about something, but I was surprised. Everyone is a little disgusted he threw his wife under the bus, but she is not a well-liked person. Nor is he, for that matter. I am so so SO happy this came out. We always suspected that Trump/Cohen knew something about Jr. and that's why he didn't support the more likely candidate: Cruz.
