I read lots of creepy and scary books in my preteen and teen years, but don’t remember much that were specifically witchy. I was fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials though and read lots of non fiction about that. Would love some suggestions for spooky reads though! I don’t mind young adult lit, I will read anything. I might just reread the Shirley Jackson books this year, but would love to expand my horizons. To reactivate your fascination with the Salem witch trials, have you read I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem by Maryse Condé? It's a beautiful piece of literature (not your "typical" historical fiction) focused on extracting a tale of folklore, feminism, heroic myth even from the historical Tituba, Black slave to Pastor Parrish in Salem and first woman accused of witchcraft in the Salem witch trials. It's short (around 250 pages), haunting, intense, deeply resonating and far too unknown in the US. It was a major success here upon release in the 1980s. The only drawback is the price of the English language paperback at almost $20 (University Press of Virginia) and no Kindle version. But in 2020, it might finally be time to delve into the voice of a Black witch written by a fellow Black diaspora female author. On a final note, Condé has been speculated to be shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature many times over the years. Alas, she hasn't received it so far and is running out of time at the age of 83. She won the "alternative" Nobel in 2018 (the New Academy Prize in Literature) which I think will seal her fate as a non-recipient for the Nobel. She's definitely worthy of one and I can only recommend I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem. Thank you, I will happily order that one! It sounds great. I get most of my books from the library, so I think I can splurge a bit. Sounds wonderful, thank you so much for the recommendation!

Instead of doing an October Daily, I've been getting photos together for a 1999 to present Halloween Compendium. My eyes are going batty just from choosing the photos and sizing them for printing, but I still need to go through them all again to adjust for lighting etc and combine my 3x4s to print on 4x6s. I'm hoping to finish by the end of next week, but that might be pushing it.

Oh, I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem sounds amazing! I shall look out for that. I have been reading quite a bit of Dahl to my own kids recently and you are right about The Witches, in fact he's not amazing with women in other books too really. Some of my most treasured books from when I was little were the Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy, they were so much fun and Mildred Hubble was a fantastic relatable character, my hair was constantly in two plaits and I desperaty wanted a tabby cat because of her. The recent-ish BBC series based on the characters is good fun too if you can find it.
I am currently reading Pam Grossman's Waking the Witch, which is part memoir, part looking at witches in popular culture. It's good!
PSLs hit the UK on the 25th of September!

I should never just "drop by" and start reading these MEGAAA threads! I don't do an October Daily because it is spring here in Australia, and Halloween isn't much of a thing. Halloween is one of our favourite holidays though, and as an American ex-pat it is something I have brought with me as a tradition. So I am doing a big set of 9x12 albums that will cover all of our Halloween adventures over the year, whatever those may be year to year: costume shopping, decor, trick or treating, pumpkin carving etc. So I thought I would take a peek at this thread and BANG! I saw that DCWV Ghost Stories stack and became obsessed! Of course it was older and impossible to find in Australia or any of my usual go-to spots...but I found one at cheap scrapbook stuff and of course since the shipping was high for just one pad I had to put more stuff in my cart to make it worthwhile, right? ...I am afraid to read any more threads in case I find more must-have stuff, lol!

Can't remember where I saw this, but liked the designs. Not sure if it's available at Michaels (which usually carries MS) but it is available on Amazon. I am trying to stick to my not buying any more halloween items thing... but wanted to share! There were also some good designs on coordinating washi tapes. I just made a Halloween page with spider web paper that is quite similar, but more of a yellowed look than gold from Carta Bella

Any peas who were kids in the 80's, teens in the 90's? I read quite a few Lois Duncan books. I remembered the book Stranger With my Face . It's kind of trippy and about astral projection. Now I'm going to do some searching for the original because they updated it where the characters use modern technology. No thank you.

Wow, thanks for the fun bit of nostalgia.

Stranger With My Face was my very favorite. I will admit to rereading them periodically and Daughters of Eve is really hard to read, but I love all the rest. I didn’t know they updated them, how dumb! I am glad I have my copies still.

Oh wow, I just googled Lois Duncan - I’m a bit older than some of you, but I found she wrote one of my favorite books from my early teens, Summer of Fear! I loved that book.

I threatened to do it to my daughter. She HATES porcelain dolls. I really should finish my scary porcelain doll project. I found the creepiest doll at a thrift store a few years ago. I also found a broken doll face that matches the creepy doll. I wanted to glue it kind of haphazardly and add some blood or something. I stained her clothes with black tea bags to dirty them up. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Omg I sold my friend a creepy porcelain doll with a lift off skull/wig for good measure, (from my in law’s collections of collections) and now I wish one or other of us had kids so we could do Doll in the Hall. She’d be perfect... especially if she sometimes left her head-lid elsewhere... Doll in the Hall by jo.blackford, on Flickr

Has anyone been following along watching Krystal Iduñate prepping her Oct Daily on YT? She has done a lot of planning! It’s interesting to see her process. I’ve gotten some ideas about things I’d like to do and document. Especially Día de los Muertos related.

That seems like a sensible time to be starting fall menus IMO. Did they have a pumpkin spice shortage? Or was it a choice? Do you know? It is a sensible time, isn't it? It was much earlier last year if I recall. I don't know why it's at this time this year, I assume it's all Covid related, they're still on a limited menu in many stores, I think.
My kids would find that pretty funny, I think. It's as creepy than the Elf on the Shelf anyway, imo. Also, you can have my husband! He'd be well up for that. He really wants an old school ventriloquist's dummy, but I know he'll end up hiding it in the bed, in cupboards, etc. He was at the dump a couple of weeks ago and found this thing for sale. I wasn't impressed. Screengrabs from our conversation because it makes me laugh.

That made me so happy! Your husband sounds delightful! Back when we could shop freely there was this horrible clown with long pink curly hair I really wanted to buy to scare friends and relatives when I went to their house, but I was too scared to touch him lest he grab me like the doll in Poltergeist! I was planning on putting it in their pantry or some such place for them to find when I was there so I could take it home and do it next house I went to visit. That doll is certainly very , very creepy and definitely has murder and mayhem on her mind.

Also, I am very excited because a local spot is going to be showing horror movies at the drive in and they will have costumed actors walking around outside the cars during the movie to scare you! We bought tickets for Get Out. I cannot wait. I hope I can get pictures for my album.
