Hey everyone! It is more important than usual to get a flu shot this year. With COVID-19, it is important to prevent as much serious flu as possible this season. This year’s vaccine is available now, but it is recommended to wait until September/October for older Americans in order to have active coverage later in the flu season. It is also recommended to get the shot by the end of October. We are going in as a family tomorrow to Walgreens to get ours. www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/vaccinations.htm

We always go in the beginning of September. Target normally gives you a $5 gift card per family member. I'm not sure if they are doing that again this year though.

Our area of Ca doean't get and start giving shots until mid September.
I haven't gotten a flu shot in 11 years but dh and I are both getting one this year.
If Covid wasn't here, we'd skip.

Massachusetts just passed a new requirement for flu shots for all children attending school.
My physical is in October and I always get my flu shot then.

Many years ago my kids got the swine flu the first week in September, so we all got started getting the vaccine early. Then in 2019 I got the flu in April after getting a flu shot in early fall, so I pushed back into October last year. I have no idea when the hell to get it this year, but we will get it at some point.

I am planning on getting mine in mid September. We usually cruise the first week in October so that's when I usually get it so it has time to be effective. Of course we aren't cruising this year, but still plan on getting it at the same time for (hopefully) maximum effectiveness. We both get one every year.

I usually get mine at work. Guess it will probably be Target/CVS this year. I've done that a few times when I was working at home on the days they were given on campus. But now I probably won't be in the office until at least January.
Dh has always bugged out of the flu shot. I'm going to drag his ass in to Target this year. DD always gets a flu shot, either at one her specialist appointments or Target if necessary.

I started seeing signs for them at the beginning of August. I've read that it's better to wait so we usually go in about mid-September. I think ds's work does theirs in October.

You’ll need a second dose 3-6 months after the first one. Not to discourage you, but I felt like crap - running 102 degree fever - for 2 days with each dose and I took it by itself. It is a hard vaccine, but the reaction is what makes it incredibly effective- 95+%. Even with feeling sick both times for 2 days, it was still a walk in the park compared to the shingles I got - on my face - in 2015.

My neighbor pharmacist recommended waiting until later in September to get one even though a few places are posting signs to get them now.

I am just trying to figure out the timing etc. I think I will call my PCP after Labor Day. Friends had the same reaction you did but I also think getting the flu shot and the first shingles one made it worse for them. She said the 2nd shot she had no issues with.

That was truly terrible. My dad had ShingrRx and he had no reaction at all. I mean nothing. So that is encouraging. ❤️

Timely thread because I had a question about the shot. Typically I like to wait until end of October to make sure we are covered in March. That is typically when it peaks here. Are there any concerns about a shortage? I am worried that people that typically don't get the flu shot are going to this year and there won't be enough. Am I being crazy and overthinking this?

I have my annual check up for my asthma on Thursday. I'm hoping they have the shots that day. If not, I'll have to go to Walgreens at some point.

Same and I only did so because of everyone here. I even told a few people about stocking up on TP and they thought I was crazy. They weren't laughing when they were trying to find some.

We always get ours the 2nd week of October but will get it in September this year since our daughter old us her docs have all said that they are finding it's still effective longer than they thought. Last year we got them at Publix because they gave out a $10 gift card for getting a flu shot. Cost us nothing, and we got a $10 each. Hope they do that again this year. I need to look.

Be mindful about getting the vaccine too early. Several years ago I got mine at the end of August (I get mine ay my neighborhood pharmacy). Come February my GP and I discussed a second dose, since the efficacy of the vaccine was wearing off.
I'm not one to roll the dice with my health (and I've been getting a flu vaccine yearly for 25 years), but I'm going to wait until my usual timing - early to mid October. Everything crossed that the increase in the number of vaccinations this year has been anticipated.

I normally get mine mid-September, but I'm considering pushing it back by a few weeks this year to have it last longer into 2021. With the social distancing and mask-wearing now and with our very anti-social lifestyle anyhow, the chances of us contracting the flu are slim-to-none.
As for Shingrix, neither DH nor I felt bad with either one. I had a little headache after the first one, which may or may not have been related and was hardly of note.
