School starts tomorrow here. The actual high school he had attended is his designated school, but the alternate school is in charge of the virtual classes. Alternate School keeps saying to go to designate school, for things like registering in classes, text books and designate school keeps saying they have nothing to do with him now. I had to go to the superintendent to get him registered last week. I find it hard to believe with 70 kids leaving the in class route to go virtual there wasn’t a routine put in place to help. He has a required introductory meeting to attend virtually tomorrow morning. But nothing has been communicated as to how to attend. I haven’t found out yet how to get his IEP transferred. Reading the introductory letter we received from the Alternate school late Friday, I also learned there will be zero teacher interaction. That students are required to work “independently”. This was never communicated to us. He has one core class English grade 12 that comes with a government exam at the end. And then options to get more extra needed credits. He needs 27 credits to graduate. I was exhausted, and frustrated at just trying to get him registered. It took ten days. I’m not capable of teaching. He already had a vicious lashing out yesterday. Keeping my fingers crossed.
We felt we had to choose virtual due to health issues in the family.

My 10 year old just got done crying and venting to for an hour. The screen is giving him a headache and there were a lot of glitches and going around the virtual room so everyone could say something about themselves. Hoping and praying tomorrow will be better. Not a good start. Hopefully he will be able to acclimate.

((((Hugs))) to all struggling
We had a rough day also - tears and frustration and an assignment she got a zero on - and no feed back on why ? I believe a zero should be for not turning in an assignment
And she's spending 9-9.5 hours/day on the computer working - that's too long imo

A rough start here too. My son went to a magnet school for middle school and this is his first year at our local high school. He’s on the hybrid plan, three days distance learning and two in person. He thought he was all set with the links but couldn’t get into his first class until the end. He missed his second class altogether and the teacher forgot to record the session. They are having half days this first week but when he clicked on “today” on the schedule it had the full day schedule which confused him. I think he has it figured out for tomorrow but he’s cranky because he feels like he missed a lot. And I’ll be back at work next week and unable to help.
My middle schooler starts his full time distance learning tomorrow and he’s the one we’d find logged in and off in a corner reading comic books last spring.

My 15yo started online learning on Tuesday. He has 4 classes this quarter--AP Physics, AP US History, band and intro to Wood Construction...really not sure how the last two will work if they don't switch to a hybrid plan. They most likely will (yay!) because they are not allowed to force the entire district to do online learning so the time spent "in" class might not even count. The district and the state have been having a pissing match about control since mid-July and sadly it's the kids that are getting peed on. The 70% who chose a hybrid plan are being forced online and now no one is allowed to do any activities (sports, marching band, or anything that's not a class). Online learning was always an option for anyone who wanted it, but the district decided to force everyone online. Districts can apply for a waiver to switch to online learning for two weeks if certain criteria are met (positivity rates, absenteeism rates, etc.) but they are not allowing any district to start 100% online. Our district sued and was denied an emergency injunction to allow online learning, but as of right now are sticking with online learning.
It is all so very confusing and frustrating--and now I'm stuck with a moody teenager who is stuck at home all day long and can't play football. High schoolers are doing 3-4 classes a quarter during this first semester. So losing the first couple of days to "settling in" with online learning is cutting into their time and the fact that they have one quarter to do a semester's worth of work. They can't do anything real with the wood class and so far (according to him) they haven't actually learned anything in Physics...oh, and band was optional today...!?!

In my classroom (8th grade science/math) I gave a zero on a science assignment that stated in the directions... "Write 7-10 well written, full sentences about what you learned in this concept. Go back to the activities and review what you did if you're having trouble coming up with what we did." The student wrote: "gravity, air resistance, and stuff."

Call him on FaceTime randomly and tell him he must answer and show you his screen. He doesn't have to DO or say anything but you must be able to see what he's doing. Be prepared for consequences to be issued. Make it clear up front what will happen and follow through.
