She was such a brave and dedicated woman. She moved female presence in law monumentally forward. I wish she had resigned under Barak Obama.

There must still be at least a few Republicans in the senate with an ounce of integrity - would only need what 4? I can only think of Mitt Romney who's broken with him, but surely there are a couple more. There are none. This country wouldn't be the shit show it is right now if there were some with integrity.

They will shove some nutbag through in the next few weeks. I fervently hope I am dead wrong. Trump will nominate someone within a few days and they’ll try to push it through.

I wonder if the democrats will just shut down the house, not pass anything if the republicans go after filling her seat.
shut down the govt. I would be for that unfortunately.

Even if they aren’t able to push someone through before the election, this gives conservatives a legitimate reason to vote for him. There is no legitimate reason. Period. It is totally a legit reason to vote for trump. Like it or not he is the current head of the RNC. He is the person to be voted in if you would like to continue having the conservative agenda pushed on everyone in this country. He is a disgusting, rotten, awful man. But that’s who they’ve got to work with if the republicans want that seat filled by a conservative. So they are going to vote for him. Not Kanye, not any other ridiculous 3rd party option. Trump. Just like we’ve got Joe Biden to vote for if we want a more liberal agenda to be pushed into everyone. So we will vote for Joe. Not Kanye, and not some other 3rd party candidate who has zero chance to win.

Even if the GOP comes to their senses and says they will wait until the next Congress, we're still screwed. Her vote was crucial to counter-act any election nonsense. At best, a Justice Roberts "concerned about the court's legacy," at best can force a tie with the "conservative" wing. They are hearing arguments concerning the fate of the ACA / Obamacare on November 10th.

They’ve repeatedly shown us exactly who they are.

There is no legitimate reason. Period. I don’t know, I can’t suppress the feeling that this hands the election to trump. Conservatives who might have otherwise been swayed by the anyone but trump argument will now vote for the sole purpose of whether there’s a conservative or a liberal in the vacant seat. On the contrary, I think this should energize every single thinking, caring person to vote blue up and down the ballot no matter what. And I also hope that if someone does get pushed through, that Biden wins and increases the size of the Supreme Court as someone else noted.

I can’t stop sobbing. Happy freaking New Year. Right? No celebrating tonight. I may log in to services just to share the grief. I was too down to attend services in the first place but am considering it too.

A lot of people that identify as independent are vehemently against swinging control so heavily in one direction. This would motivate those types of people to vote blue. There was never going to be a huge sum of Republicans turning blue but this might motivate more to show up who didn't want to vote for Trump but also couldn't vote for anyone else, either. I sincerely hope the enthusiasm I have seen in decent human beings against Trump translates to votes. I never felt Biden was a shoe in (didn't believe it when they said it about Hillary either) but this definitely makes things harder.

When you blow something up to make sure you don't have to share it, it is still blown up for everyone, including yourselves. But again, we can agree to disagree. I think it could go either way. Some Republican Senators are in danger of losing their seats, so maybe they will punt this forward. Then again, McConnell wants judges, so he could try to push a nomination through. If he does that, and if we win the WH and Senate, we should add 2 more Justices.

I was just serving up smoked brisket (I smoked a 9 pound brisket), when the news came through. I could hardly make it through dinner and my boys couldn’t understand why I was crying. I hate cancer. And I’m not too pleased with G-d right now.

I will be shocked if Chuck Grassley holds to this. My prediction is that they will announce by Monday morning 7 am EDT who they will nominate because they are the absolute worst.

I have a question...if they try to seat a new justice before January 20, what happens if we don’t have a winner yet. Many people are voting by mail this year.

I have a question...if they try to seat a new justice before January 20, what happens if we don’t have a winner yet. Many people are voting by mail this year. It doesn't matter. Trump has the authority to nominate a judge through the entirety of his term, which runs through noon on January 20th. Normally, "lame duck" Presidents don't do things that require Congressional approval, because they know Congress will sit on it. But these aren't normal times. The newly elected Senators are seated on January 3rd. So for this to get done with this Senate, it has to get done by January 2nd. Hopefully, the election will result in a Democratic Senate. If somehow the GOP holds the Senate, then they have that extra 16 days to get the Supreme Court justice rammed through, even if Trump isn't re-elected. People are hoping that people like Romney, Murkowski, Collins, etc. won't vote, but I'm not holding my breath. Whatever the Russians have, it involves Senators too.

I've said that before because the number of justices can be changed by Congress (in fact, they've done so a few times before). I know it's not a popular idea but I'm not looking for a majority; just to equalize the SC.

I hope Collins sticks to her word, but she's defending her seat this year. I can't quite see her going against her constituents.

McConnell has said in his statement that Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.
I am so heartbroken and scared right now.

It's been "reported" Romney has said he is committed to not confirming a justice until January.
