Year 7 of trying to figure this out starts next week. Im desperate for your knowledge. The most recent update: they did a spinal MRI to confirm a MS diagnosis and found a spinal injury. Spinal fusion around memorial day and he had instant pain relief and git some of his taste/smell/mobility back. Things were great for a few days and then we noticed this rash coming up. It hurts inside but isn't especially itchy. Its raised, super weird looking, and is almost crusty. So far the specialists hes seen put him on a crazy cycle of anti fungal, bacterial, viral, and steroids with no positive change. Have you ever seen something like this?

Is that by the incision from his spinal fusion surgery?

I am so happy your DH has found relief. But, how frustrating to have something else pop up!
Has he seen a dermatologist?

Is that by the incision from his spinal fusion surgery? It is, he believes it is near where the anchors are, but he isn't certain. Theyre considering a titanium allergy but its highly unlikely so theyre looking at anything else first. Its only near about 3 inches of the incision, the rest is fine.

I am so happy your DH has found relief. But, how frustrating to have something else pop up! Has he seen a dermatologist? He's been doing teledoc. They suggested ringworm and shingles and rheumatology and neurology said absolutely not either (and the meds cycle confirmed) He is trying to get in with dermatology in person. Thank you. He is relieved to be able to eat again. Unfortunately his pain levels are many times worse than before surgery.

Did they implant a plate or screws or other artificial material? I wonder if he's having an allergic reaction to something, since his pain has increased.
I am SO sorry to hear that.

It doesn't really look better after the meds... just changed? Some spots cleared up but new areas appeared. Weird. My first thought was ringworm but since you said that was ruled out I would guess an allergic reaction to the materials used in his spinal fusion.

I would call around to see a dermatologist in person. Hopefully, a pea has seen something like this and point you in the right direction

I’m thinking like others that he’s having some kind of reaction, but really I just wanted to express how sorry I am that he’s going through this. Recuperating from fusion is already difficult and then he’s got complications on top of it. Hope you find an answer soon.

First thing I thought of of scabies. Is it itchy?
Edit: Nevermind-just reread original post-not itchy. Good luck with diagnosis!

I think its a hookworm. Usually with dogs, but people get them. The rash with hookworms looks curvy and inflamed.

It looks like a psoriasis rash to me. My vote is for a dermatologist. They will likely want to take some samples and examine them under a microscope. Your poor DH just can’t catch a break.

I've never seen anything like it.
However it does not look like any sort of reaction to the implants, it just doesn't look like any infection or allergic reaction I've ever seen and very few people are allergic to metal implants...but if he were, this is in the wrong spot and a reaction wouldn't look like that because it would come from under the muscle layer...whatever this is it's in the top few layers of the skin.
It could be some form of contact dermatitis, maybe a clothing label that was against his skin or something he was lying on?
I've never heard of or seen those hookworms under the skin, so I just googled...it could be that. The good news is that they don't get any further and die, so the condition resolves itself after a couple of weeks.

It doesn't look like a typical reaction to the metal implants I have seen. Usually the whole joint is swollen, Not in lines of raised rash like this. But a whole joint red and swollen.

I was thinking a parasite, too. Definitely has a hookworm vibe. One of the reasons I never go barefoot, and I don't like swimming in lakes or ponds.

if it is a parasite, how can it have come about right after the surgery?? That seems way too coincidental. I hope you and your DH get some answers, ashley! StephDRebel! (oops!) It's got to be simply exhausting for you and your DH to have been on this journey for YEARS with improvements here and there, but no conclusive 'aha' type answers. eta: if it is a parasite, maybe somehow the surgery aggravated them / 'woke them up' in some sense??

This is an updated pic from a few minutes ago. He got through to dermatology today, theyre supposed to call back tomorrow woth an appointment this week. He's been to all the doctors over and over, they can't figure it out. I'll look for a tropical disease specialist!

That does look as if there is something living under the skin rather than a reaction to the metal from the surgery. I would think there would be localized swelling all over if it was an allergic reaction. This appears to follow a pathway or be a living entity itself. Your poor husband! I hope they figure this out quickly and he is soon finished with all of this pain and weirdness!

I have allergic reactions to all sorts of crazy things, but have never seen nothing like that. My worst reaction was to the hypoallergenic tape they use after surgery, but it was a perfect square of blisters and boils under the tape, the almost prettiness of this makes me think it is something in him. It looks like a pattern. I don’t think an allergy to the spinal fusion would present like that. I had a reaction to my sutures after my spinal surgery, and it was only at the top of the incision, but it didn’t look like that. If it is getting bigger I would be demanding an urgent appointment with the dermatologist.
