Eggshell at a minimum for walls since they need to wipeable. You can't really tell the difference until you have to clean something off of it I always do matte for the ceiling since it won't get touched and wont show imperfections. Edited to add: The builder used matte for the walls in our house. It was a nightmare. Everytime I wiped the wall paint came off with it. You could see where it was wiped long after it dried.

Definitely Eggshell. Matte has its place, but it isn't on walls.

I'm a matte girl through and through. Even in the bath and kitchen. LOVE the look. If I had small kids in the house who touch everything, I'd consider eggshell. And a strong yes to matte on the ceiling.

I've only ever used eggshell on walls so I figured it was the sheen.

Eggshell unless you are willing to get a really nice flat paint. Definitely flat on ceiling.

I thought the paint coming off was the finish. It's not. It was crappy paint sprayed on rather than rolled on.

Eggshell or satin. Matte is awful, IMO...too hard to clean.

I'd vote eggshell even though every wall in our home is flat (matte). DH *will not* budge on this one. He's picky about seeing "imperfections" in the walls and paint and he says that you can't see them with flat paint. I HATE the way it looks. It absorbs light. I long to see sunlight reflected off our walls (*dramatic voice*). But for ceilings, flat is the only way to go. Doors and trim have a sheen but I'm not sure if they're eggshell or glossier.

Following. Very helpful. But what does everyone use for doors and trim? Semi-gloss?

Personally I prefer eggshell it seems more washable. For touch surfaces like trim we’ve used satin.

He's picky about seeing "imperfections" in the walls and paint and he says that you can't see them with flat paint I agree with him 100% I live in an older apartment that was rented out before I bought it, despite all the prep, filling holes and sanding, the walls are still not perfect and every little imperfection would be highlighted in any paint with a shine to it. I have everything painted in matte and this is also something I would never budge on. Apart from showing every little wall dent and scratch, I just don't like shiny walls. I also have no problem cleaning them when I need to and don't have paint come off when I do. I also just have low sheen on the doors and trims

DH insists on eggshell while I’m a matte person. I let him have his way on this one.

Eggshell on the walls. My ceilings are actually painted with semi-gloss (they're flat, no texture/popcorn) - I like the way it bounces the light back into the room, it's especially nice to have in the kitchen, where someone somehow spewed spaghetti sauce or something on the ceiling...

I always use satin. With 3 kids and a dog, we have to wipe down the walls often. And I don't like the feel of flat and eggshell, I'm weird! In our old house, it was a new build, and if I brushed against the walls that were painted in flat paint, it was like nails on a chalkboard. I think I am definitely in the minority about not liking flat.

I just did an entire room in Benjamin Moore eggshell and I regret painting the ceiling that way. It shows every imperfection and doesn't look right to me. I'm going to have the ceiling redone.
I suggest eggshell on the walls and flat on the ceiling.

I agree that eggshell will definitely show more imperfections. We used it in our great room and bedrooms at the cabin (because kid + dogs) and you can see EVERY.LITTLE.FLECK. and bloop of slopped paint. Ugh. I hate it, but it’s kind of a must for kitchens and bathrooms particularly where splatters are more likely.
But I also hate that flat paint looks bad if you ever have to wipe anything off of it (again, kid + dogs). Our previous big dog was so slobbery and greasy he always left marks on the corners where he would rub past the walls. We did get more expensive paint, but even so.
ETA: Only flat on the ceilings. And only white. MIL had the ceilings painted a weird yellowish off white color before and it was awful. It always looked dirty and dark to me.

I have always had the ceilings done (for clients and for myself) in 25% of the wall color, except in the case of very deep wall colors. That way the ceiling is much lighter than the walls, but not a stark white. Give it a try!

I do eggshell on the walls, flat on the ceiling. We only do white on the ceilings in our area.
Don't do satin on the walls, it will be too shiny and show imperfections.
I do super white semi gloss on my trim (not doors) because I like them to "pop."

We pained our entire house (except kitchen and baths) with a matte velvacon brand ritz cracker color... walls and ceiling. Kitchen and bath were semi of the same color. Doors and trim were semi in caramel apple. Recently we’ve been repainting room after 16 years. Dd has lilac satin on her walls with Swiss coffee semi gloss wainscoting and baseboards. Ds has thundercat gray satin on his walls with Swiss coffee semi gloss wainscoting and baseboards. We repainted the main part of the house in Swiss coffee satin. Ceilings are all flat Swiss coffee. My walls are smooth non textured. The imperfections don’t bother me, I don’t even see them.
