When we did our big family trip to Hawaii and San Francisco from Australia I took photos of signs - especially the prices of petrol on petrol stations and distance signs on the roads. I took photos of signs when we went to Hawaii, too- some price signs, but also signs and other things we wouldn't see anywhere but Hawaii... like the 'tsunami siren' or the 'don't feed the mongeese' signs; the potty people on the bathroom doors (the man wore a Hawaiian shirt, the woman wore a muumuu); the signs in the store that said you could pay with yen; things like that. ETA: I always take pics of a LOT of things in museums, etc. that I know I'm never going to scrap, but they're helpful. If I take a photo of a painting, I'll also take a photo of the sign that says the artist, name of the work, etc. Otherwise I might not remember why I took a picture of a specific thing, and I'd *never* remember the details by the time I get around to scrapbooking. We have tsunami signs along the CA coast. Not sure about WA and OR but I think I saw them in AK too.

I have collected 'squashed pennies' at many places. They imprint an image from where you are visiting on an old coin, and they are an interesting oval shape. Oh, read that one too fast!

I'm a big fan of the pictures of signs things and paper maps! for the cruises we've been on I end up with a LOT of papers from the trip as I save all the maps from ports as well as alllll the cruise planner docs they give out with the activities for the day. I just shove it all in an 8.5 x 11 page protector and stick it in between 2 sides of my 12 x 12 layouts instead of trying to incorporate it in a layout. fun to be able to go back and see what was what.
I have also saved the score sheets from things like mini golf or trivia from different trips, great for a journaling prompt.
I feel like I have to go out of my way most of the time to end up with papers though as so much is digital.

We have tsunami signs along the CA coast. we sure don't have them in AZ, though! lol. eta: In my actual layouts, I end up using more of the information from photos and photos of 'things' that I've taken, because I can never FIND where I put the *actual* ephemera. I've NEVER figured out a system for keeping the ephemera in one safe place so that it's accessible when I go to scrapbook. (or it's sooo safe that I can't find it again- whichever way you look at it.)

I did something different this year for our recent trip to the beach. I made a Travel Notebook and then took my little 2x3 printer with me on the trip. At the end of each day, I printed a few pictures and stuck them in my album. I was done scrapping the trip before we even got home!
I did take a picture of a warning sign about rip tides and what to do if caught in one. We were at Mission Beach and there were daily rip current warnings. I also took a picture of the lifeguard truck because we saw them have to go out and get surfers that were struggling or were out too deep.

All of these things, plus I LOVE going in grocery stores and taking pictures of the local foods. My favorite pics from a trip to Sweden in 2000 are pictures I took of cereal boxes They had some of the same cereals as in the US, but with different names. At first glance, I thought you took 2000 pictures of cereal boxes. . .
