My first name and my sister's both start with the same letter. My sister's children both have names that start with the same letter. My children's names are not similar in any way. My DH's family is Greek. Many of their names don't start with the same letter, but are the same darned name. First and last names are the same in a few instances.

It hadn't crossed my mind to do that.

Dh and his brothers sort of do. Brian, Bob and Brett. Though Bob is formally Robert but always went by Bob until his early 20's then switched to Rob, but after his recent divorce and a job change, he's back to Bob. Family always called him that anyway. I believe MIL did it on purpose, but I'm not positive. The funny thing is that dh's middle name is Keith and his brother's is Joseph. But for some reason their grandmother always called dh "Brian Joe". That confused me the first time I heard her call him that.

I also want to point out that there are other ways that people can make names "match". Such "Mary and Shari" or "Mary Lou, Mary Sue, Mary Ann (I had a classmate who had four or five sisters and their first names were all Mary). Or I have known people who named their kids after cars or flowers or other themes. My brother has two kids--Liam and Mila. Same letters in both names. Yes, I know someone who has 2 kids: Alex (boy) and Lexi (girl). I couldn't help wondering whether she even realised that she had named her children the same name. I love names. I would love this kind of thread even more if we were able to post the actual names.

I only have one kid, so no, but I specifically didn’t want her to have the same initials as DH or me. Neither of our families did that, however I was named after my mom’s twin. My mom and aunt had variations of the same first name and variations of the same middle name, so that meant that my name/initials were very similar to my mom’s. OMG, it was a nightmare of mixed up medical records, dental records, social security stuff, and mail all the way up until I got married and changed my last name. I couldn’t even forward my mail after I moved out because I would have gotten half of my mom’s mail. I hated that so much I absolutely did NOT want my kid to have anything even remotely similar to either one of us. I dated a guy in high school whose parents both had the same first letter names and they named all five of their kids with that same letter first names and the same letter middle names. Ugh. So not only were their names similar but their initials were all identical. I was not a fan even then because of my own experience. My sister married a guy whose parents did the same thing, five kids all with D names and J middle names. When my niece had her first kid they intentionally chose names so her initials would be the same as the dad’s. I told her it would be a mess later on, but she didn’t care. Then their next two kids have the same initials as each other. I really don’t get why anyone would invite that kind of confusion intentionally into their lives.

I only have one child. She has my middle name. However, she's given every dog we've had names that start with A - Alex, Ashley, and Allie. (The last two also have our middle name )

crazy4scraps - DH and DS have almost the same initials except that DS has two middle names and thus two middle initials. It wasn't planned and since he actually had my maiden name as his birth surname (we legally changed it later) it wasn't obvious at first either. And I've just realised the same was true for my mum and my youngest sister (who also had two middle names)

Yes, unintentionally.
First daughter given name I chose as a 12 year old..."if I ever have a daughter...."
A friend came to visit our new arrival and I told her names we had picked for boys, and name(first and middle) we had in reserve if we had girl twins. My friend flipped middle with first name and we really liked it more, so that name stuck when we had second daughter (same letter as first daughter.)

We were six of us growing up and not one repeated initial first or middle names. My mom was a friend of a lady who had nine kids all with J for first initial and A for second, girl or boy. It drove her nuts so she didn’t do that to us. I als went to school with other large family groups of kids that had all S first name, B names and R name. I was grateful to be a large family of kids with different names.

No, but my half siblings are Michael and Michelle . One of my oldest friends gave all 3 of her children the exact same initials, and all of their first names are animals.

No, but they all have my last ("maiden") name as their middle name. No hyphen, it's just their middle name.
It ended up being very handy when I needed to lay claim to to the kids when they started school, as I retained my name when I got married almost 40 years ago. If I needed to push the relationship issue -- say, in a note to pick the kid up from school early -- I just referred to him by all three of his names and signed my first & last names.

yes, all 4, it also happens to be the same letter as dh's name and my name start with. We knew our first son would have my dh's grandfather's name. When our 1st was a girl we decided that her name should start with the same letter since we knew we wanted to have more kids. Second baby was a boy and was named for dh's grandfather, third baby was another boy and since the other two had the same we figured he should too, and then with number 4 there was no question. We all have different middle names so our monograms are different. Dh and fil have the same initials.
