I would really like to just stick my head in the sand and say “it’s just a cold”. I get one every year around this time and usually bronchitis or pneumonia shortly follows. I teach preschool and usually barrel on through and never miss a day of work. This year is different. Spent Wednesday and Thursday sneezing with runny nose and chalked it up to the usual allergies. Took a large dose of benedryl Thursday night and felt like a million bucks yesterday. Fast forward to this morning and I woke up with a dry cough, headache, and elevated temp. It has sent my anxiety through the roof.
I know the responsible thing to do is quarantine and get tested. Of course finding a way to get tested has been almost impossible. Finally managed to get an appointment through urgent care with a different hospital system for this afternoon. I may be panicking for nothing. I want to crawl under the covers and say it’s just a cold. But I know I can’t.
I feel awful that I may have exposed my families at work this week. It’s one of the craziest times of year with fall celebrations, assessments, and conferences. There’s a deadline for CARES act paperwork I’m trying to meet. My stress level was already through the roof and now this.
Worst of all I had to cancel Halloween for my 5 year old. He’s been counting down the days since the beginning of August. We were only going trick or treat at 6 ‘safe’ houses. I had made arrangements with specific friends and neighbors that i know have been taking precautions for him to trick or treat at earlier in the day. (None of them are passing out candy tonight). I had to hold back my tears as I told him.
Ugh I hate this!!!! Thanks for reading if you got this far. I just needed to get it out.

Is it a rapid test? Hopefully you get your results back in time to take him tot'ing. That had to have hurt your mama heart to have to tell him he couldn't go.
I worry about this myself as I also have allergies. This year just bites all the way around.

Gads, that really sucks! Sorry you are feeling so bad! And for your little one’s tears.
My DD made a “Dragon Heist” for the Grands in their home. The dragon stole their candy and the kids (in costume) will have to go find it around the house. Perhaps, if you feel up to it and have some treats you could do something similar inside your place.

I’m so so sorry. I hope your test is negative and you’re feeling better soon. It sucks that the right thing is often the hard thing.

Can I suggest that you do an in house Halloween? Hide little treats around the house and let him search for them. Dress him up in his costume and take pictures.

Could your neighbors bring the candy to your porch and drop it off? He could be in his costume in the house looking out the window or front door.
Hopefully this is nothing and you test negative.

That’s the thing.... I don’t feel all that cruddy. Any normal year and I’d still be taking him out trick or treat in my current state. My stepdad is going to hide the treats he had for him in our yard so at least he’ll have something. For DS it’s not even about the candy. He just likes going out talking to people and seeing all their different costumes.

We're doing a flashlight candy hunt in the house for my 9 and 4 year olds. It'll be fine, I think. We weren't planning on going out due to stupid Covid. I'm good with that. I always end up with shin splints the next day due to walking hills (we live at the top of a hill and all the roads are hilly)

Also, we never kept the candy in our house. The boys trick or treated adn at the end of the night they traded in their candy for a Thomas train. They agreed to it each year and always looked fwd to the toy at the end, not caring about the candy. They could keep the candy from 3 houses (neighbors w/whom we are friends and we had plenty of leftovers, anyway). Could your stepdad pick out a toy and make that the last thing he finds?
I'm thinking negative test thoughts for you. Meanwhile, rest rest rest and I hope you feel better quickly.

So, you usually go to work with little kids when you have bronchitis and/or pneumonia? You know both of those are contagious, right?

Such a strange time. Any twinge of anything and we all second guess what we normally would know.

Youngest DS had a potential exposure at school last week. He was sent for a test at an urgent care and the results came back within 30 mins (double nostril swab). He came back negative.
When are scheduled to get the results?

Can your stepdad take him out trick or treating? That’s what I was wondering. He can still do the parts he enjoys at a distance. Poor you. Poor little kid. Good luck. Let us know.

So, you usually go to work with little kids when you have bronchitis and/or pneumonia? You know both of those are contagious, right? Most teachers I know go to work unless they are too sick to get out of bed. Subs are sometimes hard to come by, and it helps a lot to keep as much continuity as possible, and most of the time if the teacher is sick it’s something going around the school - we all do have to be more cautious in this day and age I believe, but you might be surprised to learn how often teachers go to school when they are under the weather.

When I had my test earlier this week, the doctor at the clinic that administered it said that the new rapid result tests they're using are reliable and accurate for symptomatic patients, and don't have the same kind of issues with high numbers of false negatives that earlier tests had. Hopefully you can get one soon.

I had made an appointment at urgent care for later this afternoon and they actually called and said they weren't busy if I wanted to come in 3 hrs earlier. Quick swab and was on my way. They said 3 days at the most for results because of the high amounts of testing right now, but could be as little as 24 hours. Our numbers just keep spiking around here. PopPop (my stepdad) dropped off DS's goody bag on our front porch so he's been happily covering the house with glow sticks and throwing his new light up ghost ball off the walls. He's dressed up in several previous Halloween costumes and has been "trick or treating" around the house. Most teachers I know go to work unless they are too sick to get out of bed. Subs are sometimes hard to come by, and it helps a lot to keep as much continuity as possible, and most of the time if the teacher is sick it’s something going around the school - we all do have to be more cautious in this day and age I believe, but you might be surprised to learn how often teachers go to school when they are under the weather. ...and doctors, and nurses, and most everyone else. You get it @longtimenopeapea.

I'm so sorry! It must be extra hard worrying about your little guy.
I'm waiting for my results. I had a chance to see one of my sons (home from college) and he became ill and tested positive days later.
Meanwhile, I've got friends who returned from the beach in Mexico last week and now have driven to OBX by way of a stopover in Nashville (over 3,000 mile roadtrip RT)- not a care in the world about exposures or spreading. Oooops, I should have saved that for a vent thread.
Thank you for caring and having a conscious.

I was where you are just days ago. Thought it was just a cold because I have been so very cautious. Got tested because it was the right thing to do.
Imagine my shock when it came back positive! I actually cried. Thankfully no one else in my extremely small circle has tested positive (including my daughter who is 35 weeks pregnant).
I am glad that I got tested. I would have felt the same way even if I had tested negative.
Hopefully your test is negative because this virus really does suck

Hopefully the test will be negative and when you feel better, you can plan some other type of celebration for him. You are putting your health and other people's safety first. It's a good lesson you are teaching your child. He'll learn something that will last a lot longer than candy.

I'm not insinuating this is you, but I've had a couple of teachers test negative, still feel bad, but come to work just because it isn't Covid. Just want to make sure you feel better before going to work...unless you are virtual and doing conferences virtually
