So, I love layouts that use torn strips of patterned paper as layers, but whenever I try to attempt it myself, I just get too anxious about tearing into my pretty papers. I know I should probably just rip-off the band-aid and give it a shot, but I can't get past the mental block in my head.
There's also a lot of mixed media products and techniques I want to try, but I just know I'll make a big old mess.
Are there any techniques or products/tools you want to try but for some reason are hesitant to?

The only thing I'm too nervous to do is to spend money on products or machines that I might not use enough to make it worth the expense. If I can't justify the price it's a no go.
I can rip paper, but maybe not "the good paper" lol

I try not to get into anything that will require tons of new purchases.

I agree with the others investing in a new set of tools/ products is the biggest factor. I would love to try turn about stamps or manual die cutting but don’t want to make the investment. ETA: sewing on pages scares me! Thanks refugeepea I forgot about that. I made a TN that I want to sew at the binding but I’m too scared.

I wouldn't say nervous more like not patient enough or willing to invest in certain products. Messy things like art journaling or sewing on pages.

scrappymeg - have you tried holding a ruler along where you want to tear and pulling the paper towards you. It make s a kind of “neat” tear but may help you to start

I was going to suggest practicing the tearing technique or even mixed media with either paper scraps, or with papers that you don't really like. Then you can see how it works before using anything pretty!

Sometimes I like it much better ripped up!

See, sewing didn’t scare me because I already have the stuff to do it and if I screw up it’s ‘only’ paper 😉

I used to ask for items that I didn't want to splurge on for Christmas. That way, I could get it, and not feel bad for spending my own money on it.
Tearing paper with a ruler is how I started tearing. I don't like the "rough" tear without the ruler. I much prefer the straight "clean" tear I get with the ruler.
It's not with a physical product, but even taking the time to learn more on cricut design space bugs me. I could spend that time doing something I don't have to learn. But last night, I actually sat at my computer to learn how to upload images, and how to find images to upload.

i'm to nervous to try anything that i think will be too messy. like color sprays. i love the effects they have but the thought of the clean up and stains on my work surface make me hesitate. i'm just a touch OCD like that.

Tearing paper, no biggie Sewing on paper, no biggie
ALLLL those inks and stamps scare the beezeguez out of me.. In fact, I gifted over 600 stamps that I scored at a garage sale to a friend who I knew would love them. I sat down, looked at some YouTube videos and still scared me. I kept about a dozen stamps and that is it..

For tearing, I sometimes drag a wet q-tip where I want the tear. It weakens the fibers enough so the tear is controlled and I get a jagged edge that I like.
I am intimidated by mixed media - I've dabbled a bit but I almost always hate what I make except ink splatters. I don't want to buy even more stuff and still hate the end product. But then I watch a Missy Whidden video and her stuff looks amazing!!

Maybe try practicing tearing on gift wrap. Also, btw, paper has a "grain", per how the fibers align when the paper is produces. Think about how when you tear a newspaper page one direction fairly straightly vs tearing it the other, perpendicular, direction, when it tears vary jaggedly. Or, as someone above suggested, practice on less preferred papers. HTH.
As for sewing on paper. Don't fret. Just use a dedicated needle, as paper, a wood product, will significantly dull your needle. Just like cutting paper will ruin your sewing shears. Sewing on paper will NOT ruin your sewing machine.
Hope this helps. Have fun.
